Angelina Jolie might be one of modern cinema’s most iconic vixens, but when creating her look for the new movie The Tourist, her costume designer looked to classic film noir glamour. “My inspiration for [Jolie's character] Elise’s costumes were the Hitchcock movies: minimal elegance,” Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, who worked on the thriller, tells PEOPLE. In one scene, Jolie’s character dashes off to a ball in Venice, Italy, wearing a glamorous, flowing black gown topped off with a diamond-studded choker (below). “The black gown was designed to evoke the grand life, and to frame Angelina Jolie’s beauty,” Atwood explains. “The necklace was created by Robert Procop from an antique tiara, and [the diamonds were] definitely real!” Another eye-catching number from the film, an ivory sheath accented with a camel shawl and gloves (above), had a royal lineage as well. “That look was inspired by a dress designed by Irene [Lentz], who is a legendary costume designer,” Atwood says. “I took the basic idea and added some flair to contemporize it. The original had a jacket, but I really wanted something a little more luxurious, so I created the cashmere wrap. I’ve always loved a glove, and was filming in the land of fine gloves, so I used a fine suede glove to finish the look.” –Sara Hammel

Natalie Portman may have glided with ease across the stage for her role as a prima ballerina in the upcoming ballet thriller Black Swan, but it turns out that it was the team behind her tutus that were put to the real challenge! While becoming the first fashion designers to covet a National Art Award from Americans for the Arts recently, Rodarte’s Laura and Kate Mulleavy explained to nymag.com the challenges of creating the intricate costumes for the film. “A tutu is 13 layers of tulle sticking straight out and then it’s over the body, so you can imagine. It’s crazy!” said Laura, who had only seen a ballet costume up close once before the film. The sister-act was introduced to the film’s director, Darren Aronofsky, by Portman–a longtime Rodarte lover–and after that, were brought on board to create looks for the film’s Swan Lake performance. “Building a tutu is one of the lost couture arts. Everyone will know it’s like getting your hand on the prize, like a coveted piece of couture that no one ever gets to see,” Laura explained. “You can’t go rent a tutu. You have to own it…They’re never actually perfect, but from afar, when you’re in the audience, it looks like one of the most beautiful things in the world.” And while the film has already received Oscar buzz, maybe the tutus will too! –Jessie Goldberg

Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver turned up to the premiere of their new film You Again in matching teal David Meister dresses—on purpose! The duo showed their sense of humor in recreating their accidental onscreen faceoff in the comedy, also in dresses by Meister, for their big night. Turns out the funny ladies had the idea themselves earlier this summer and went to Meister for help in making it happen, collaborating with him on the style and the color choice. And for his part, the designer had a ball participating in the scheme. Ryan Reynolds is no stranger to hard-core fitness regimens, having even revealed that to get in superhero shape for next summer’s Green Lantern, “You spend one day a week eating what you want and the other six days eating drywall and wood chips.” His latest role in the white-knuckle thriller, Buried, in which he plays an American in Iraq who awakens finds himself 6-feet underground in a coffin, required no such diet and fitness routine. “Um…I’m in a coffin. Why would I have to get buff?” the actor deadpanned at the film’s Cinema Society and 2(x)ist screening in N.Y.C. on Thursday night. When he emerged at the end of the 17-day shoot, spent entirely in a box the size of his 6’2′ frame, “I definitely did not look good,” Reynolds told reporters. “I’d seen better days. From Europe to Bali, filming Eat Pray Love was one hot job–literally! With temperatures soaring to over 100 degrees in some locations, it was no easy task keeping star Julia Roberts in costume and comfortable. “I made sure the clothes were as light as they possibly could be and still told the story,” Eat Pray Love costume designer Michael Dennison tells PEOPLE. And the scorching heat wasn’t the only issue for the skilled costumer when it came to dressing Julia. While shooting in Rome, Dennison also had to account for his leading lady’s real and perceived weight gain due to all those eating scenes. “She probably put on about seven pounds,” he admits. “I scaled down clothes and stuff like that to make them look tighter, and loosened up clothes to make it look like she was gaining more weight than she actually did.” And by the time they got to India, the progression to baggy clothing seemed natural for Julia’s character. “It was intrinsic to the Ashram that her clothes be as loose and flowy and airy as possible,” says Dennison. “It’s like a dress-code, they’re prayer clothes and also work clothes, and to be practical you [don't] want anything close to your body. Emma Watson may have credited her dramatic new pixie cut to the end of the Harry Potter series, but now it seems that her freshly shaven do might in fact be for a new movie role. When Ilaria Urbinati, the co-owner of L.A. boutique Confederacy met with Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa about stocking Calvin Klein Collection, the stylist-turned-shopkeeper had one very specific request: Remake the little white dress from Clueless! “I sort of geeked out on him, [explaining] how my formative-years love of Calvin Klein was partly based on the little white minidress Alicia Silverstone wears in Clueless,” Urbanati told InStyle.com. “I re-eanacted the entire scene with Cher and her father—’Cher, what are you wearing?’ ‘A dress!’ ‘Says who?’ ‘Calvin Klein!’–and of course I said, ‘Francisco, you need to remake that dress!’” And he didn’t need much convincing. Talk about eternity in the making! The engagement ring given to Bella by Edward in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, was a true labor of love, reports InStyle.com, requiring a prop master, five different jewelers, several samples and a multitude of research to finally get the glittering piece to perfection–and up to author Stephenie Meyer’s liking. The task of designing the antique engagement ring–described by Meyer in her Eclipse novel as a delicate piece “set with slanting rows of glittering round stones”–fell on prop master Grant Swain, who tirelessly researched Victorian-era jewelry before calling in samples and hiring four different designers to create various prototypes of the ring. But to no avail: Meyer, unimpressed with the model baubles, took it upon herself to draw up a rough sketch of the ring as she had envisioned it. The illustration was sent to Portland-based jeweler Rick Thurber, who used a computerized image of the drawing to create the end result — a stunning pave-diamond ring that was rushed to the set just hours before filming of the pivotal scene began!
