Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo but just weren’t sure about what to get or how much you’d like when on? Katharine McPhee told PEOPLE at the premiere of I Now Pronounce You Larry and Chuck that she’s been wanting a tattoo but decided to do a test run with a henna design first! The singer confesses, “I’ve been wanting a tattoo. I think sometimes they can be sexy. I went to India Town yesterday, [and] I went to the Hollywood Salon. So I just got some Henna and I love it!” But don’t hold your breath for her to get inked up anytime soon. The soon-to-be-actress may just keep the impermanent style for a little while longer. As Katharine told PEOPLE, “Maybe I’ll just keep doing Henna for a while and see if I like it.” Sounds like a plan to us! Going from average high school student to America’s singing sweetheart requires a certain wardrobe adjustment. So you may have noticed when Jordin Sparks, who wore an affordable dress on last week’s American Idol, stepped it up last night in a custom-made designer frock by Badgley Mischka. Longtime fans of the show, Mark Badgley and James Mischka honed in on Jordin early on. Badgley tells PEOPLE, “We kept thinking, ‘That’s a beautiful young girl; she would look amazing in our clothes.’ ” So when Jordin made it to the top two with Blake Lewis, they jumped on creating her finale wardrobe. Mischka says of Jordin: “She’s absolutely amazing and such a talent. She’s only 17 years old, but we wanted her to look glamorous and feminine.” Judging by the dazzling black dress she wore when she brought the house down singing “This Is My Now,” they’re already on target. But at the 42nd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, Kellie set us straight. The Season 5 American Idol finalist told PEOPLE, “Yes, it is new! I just wanted a change. Just last month, Kelly Clarkson wowed us with her new grown-up sleek and glossy brunette bob at the ASCAP awards. Well, it seems like she’s already sick of the short hair. Yesterday, the former American Idol turned up at TRL to talk about her upcoming album, My December, sporting some longer — and darker — locks in a pulled back half-up look. We really liked Kelly’s short hair, but the added length does give her a rock-n-roll edge. Luckily no hair change is permanent. Tell us: Do you like Kelly with long hair or a classic bob?

With all six American Idol finalists still intact after last week’s surprise twist — no one goes home! — it was only natural that the singers would turn things up a notch. Not only did Blake Lewis break from the expected with his beat-boxing rendition of “You Give Love a Bad Name,” he amped up his look by swapping out his blond spikes for an edgier black crop. Kelly Clarkson tends to show up to red carpets looking either sweetly done-up, as she did at the CMT Giants event last year, or really rocked out. But we’ve never seen Kelly look quite as chic and sophisticated as she did at the ASCAP awards last night! Sporting a sleek and glossy brunette bob, the singer stepped out in a moss green chiffon Monique Lhuillier cocktail dress with a pearl-laden neckline and blinged-out Guiseppe Zanotti stilettos. We’ve seen it before with Carrie Underwood — she’s the picture of innocence on the red carpet only to reveal a sexier side onstage. And last night’s CMT awards (where the singer won three awards) was no exception. Carrie told PEOPLE that “I just wanted something different, just something sweet” of her ’50s-style Badgley Mischka dress and nude Christian Louboutin heels that she arrived in. But her onstage look was anything but sweet, with silver hot-pants showing off her toned legs, a keyhole top, armful of bangles and legwarmers over stilettos. We want to know which look you prefer! To show their support for American Idol finalist Blake Lewis, the Seattle-based singer’s cheering squad has been sporting shirts emblazoned with “Blaker Girl” or “Blaker Boy” across the chest when they attend the show. Inspired by former Laker Girl Paula Abdul, Blake’s childhood friend Kristi Redman, along with other friends, got serious about making pro-Blake paraphernalia as the singer kept advancing in the competition. Now t-shirts ranging from $15 to $20 along with baby onesies, buttons and hats are available on blakergirls.com with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, in honor of Blake’s friend Brad and Brad’s girlfriend Heather, who were both diagnosed with lymphoma within two months of each other. Will Ferrell is happily rocking a highlifted afro for his next film, the basketball comedy “Semi Pro,” and blithely wore a dark shag cut for Blades of Glory. But when asked at the Hollywood premiere of the new ice-skating comedy which celebrity he’d love to swap tresses with, he immediately looked to American Idol’s Sanjaya Malakar. “I love this Sanjaya kid, silky smooth,” Ferrell gushed. “I’d love to run my fingers through it, if that’s possible … but I may get in trouble for it.” Why not vote for Ferrell and which Sanjaya style he should run his fingers through?

Sanjaya Malakar’s hair is getting as much — if not more — attention as his singing. In just a few weeks on the show, the adventurous 17-year-old has undergone several tress-formations, morphing from shaggy to super-straight to ultra curly and his most recent concoction — seven teased ponytails in the shape of a faux-hawk (Wonder what Mr. T would think about that one?). Lakisha Jones’s performance of the Shirley Bassey classic “Diamonds Are Forever” may not have blown away the judges on last night’s American Idol, but her million dollars’ worth of Kwiat diamonds certainly did. Paula Adbul called Lakisha a “smart girl” for knowing that singing about diamonds means someone will loan you the real thing. And the real thing they were! Kwiat provided the singer with a $150,000 26-carat diamond necklace, a $250,000 diamond brooch worn in her hair, a three-carat ring worth $10,000 and those multiple bracelets with almost 100 carats of diamonds! Whew. And Lakisha should get used to it: It’s just a taste of the borrowed red-carpet bling she’ll surely be wearing someday.

After getting the scoop from her hair and makeup artist, we love seeing Katharine McPhee get glammed up for the red carpet. She looked perfectly polished at the Golden Globe after parties on Monday night. Then, for a Wednesday lunch, we spotted Katharine looking very natural with minimal makeup, straight hair and dark-rimmed glasses. Since winning American Idol in 2002, Kelly Clarkson has been no stranger to mixing up her look — from blond to brunette, from sweet to sexy, from long to short — but we still couldn’t help noticing the dramatic difference between her most recent red carpet look and her off-duty style. At the CMT Giants event in late October, Kelly sported a perfectly curled coif and polished makeup. But this week, she visited the Broadway musical Avenue Q with no visible makeup and a newly cropped, darker do. It’s always intriguing to see stars with fresh faces, and this former Idol is no exception. Tell us: Do you like Kelly glam or natural? Which look is her strongest?

If you’ve seen our exclusive Video Diary of Katharine McPhee getting ready for the Billboard Awards, you know she got some help getting red-carpet ready from her hairstylist Campbell and her makeup artist Jake Bailey. They let us in on a few tricks they used on Katharine that night, like Jake’s no-smudge mascara trick of putting cardboard right under the lashes while applying.

To get Katharine’s hair wild and rock ‘n’ roll, Campbell scrunch-dried her hair and then started curling it on a medium barrel iron from the bottom of her head up. Now, here’s a trick we’ve never heard of (but sounds brilliant!) — he took random sections between the curls, braided them, and ran a flat iron over them to lock in the wave. Shake it out, and you have a fabulous wavy texture to toughen up the curls. To keep it locked in place for the big show, Campbell gave her hair more than one spritz of hairspray (try Spray and Play from BigSexyHair, Katharine’s fave). What was the inspiration behind Katharine’s makeup? Says her makeup artist Jake Bailey, “Simply Katherine herself. She is such a natural beauty.” To keep the singer from looking washed out on camera, Jake used a slightly darker foundation on her face, followed by a dusting of Benefit’s Dallas blush which he says “has just the right amount of shimmer to highlight the apples of her cheeks when she flashes her gorgeous smile.” Jake used Prescriptives Liner in Jet on her eys, and to recreate the look, he recommends you “start by lining the inner rim of the eye than work it into the lashes and outside the lash line just a few millimeters.” Blend a little with your finger if you want to make it look smoky. He finished her off with a waterproof lip liner from Styli-Style and Chanel Glossimer in Pagoda. Picture-perfect!

Carrie Underwood may have established herself as a singer, but her image seems to still be in flux. The former Idol hit the red carpet at the American Music Awards last night in a super-sweet, ivory floral-appliqué Max Azria Atelier dress. But during the show (where she won Best New Breakthrough Artist), she performed in a hotpants/bustier ballgown combo that was oddly reminiscent of Demi Moore’s infamous Oscar outfit from a few years back. We’re all for trying out new looks onstage — if you can’t experiment with costumes onstage, where can you? — but we think she looks more at ease and natural in her demure red-carpet look.
