Alicia Silverstone: Secondhand Shopper with a Cause

Rescuing lost dogs with her mom at a young age really made an impression on Alicia Silverstone. In her late teens, the actress started exploring cruelty-free products; by age 21 she was a full-on vegan; and at 23 she was subscribing to an eco-friendly lifestyle.

“It took so much effort to find out what products aren’t tested on animals — that was an ordeal,” Silverstone told reporters recently during a press event for EcoTools in New York. “But then when I became into eco, it took out all of that: if you’re using all-natural products that have no toxic chemicals, it narrows the playing field.”

These days, the actress is a strong advocate for all things green — she even makes the very anti-Hollywood choice of buying used clothes. “My second stop would be organic cotton,” she said. Scouring Craigslist for household items — “Then you get it really locally, and it already exists,” she explained — she stressed that she doesn’t sacrifice taste and style when shopping secondhand, either. “I realize if you’re not happy with what you have, you want to change it out more,” she shared.

Maria Bello: People ‘Love Getting a Gift That Gives Back’

After visiting Haiti following the earthquake of 2010, Maria Bello was inspired to help. So the actress rounded up some associates and founded We Advance, an organization designed to help the poorest victims get back on their feet, receive adequate healthcare and have access to an education.

To raise funds for her non-profit, Bello is partnering with LovingEco.com this week; she curated products for a sale on the environmentally friendly site, and in turn, they’re donating three percent of proceeds to We Advance.

“People often ask me how they can help — they don’t know where to start,” Bello tells PEOPLE. “LovingEco offers people the chance to give back, while also providing fashionable products. It’s about style for change.”

Items in Bello’s sale include the We Advance necklace, designed by Caroline Sada, Shelley Clay and the female artisans of The Apparent Project, another organization that helps Haiti’s neediest residents. “Each bead is handmade from recycled cereal boxes, and the medallion pendant is made from recycled oil drums,” Bello explains.

Adrian Grenier Curates Eco-Friendly Sale for GILT Man

When Entourage star Adrian Grenier launched SHFT.com last year, his goal was to bring the best in sustainable product to his readers and fans. Now, he’s moving forward with that mission, curating a two-day sale on GILT that includes some of his favorite eco-friendly apparel and accessories for men. “GILT is good at what they do, and we’re good at what we do, so it made sense to do this collaboration,” Grenier tells PEOPLE. “Our goal at SHFT.com is to reach a critical mass so that all products we love and are sustainably minded will ultimately become less and less expensive. So it’s right up our alley to be able to put affordability and sustainability into the same sentence.” The GILT sale, which runs from noon ET today until noon ET on Friday, includes Simple shoes, a bike from Nirve, Daniel Moyer Designer longboards, Core Bamboo bowls, tables from Alex Artless and casual menswear from Nau. A portion of sales will benefit the Webby award-winning SHFT.com. Grenier says that while he makes a point of purchasing sustainable products, it’s not quite possible to shop in an exclusively eco-friendly manner just yet. “You do what you can, and that’s the reality of where we are,” he shares. “To me, it’s not about being absolute in your life, it’s about making a sincere, dedicated effort to make this meaningful shift in your life. I think as our demand goes that way, designers and producers will, too.” And he’s using his website to help the cause. “My dream is that one day, SHFT.com will be the only site you go to for products, because it’ll have everything you need, and everything will have a sustainable element. So that’s my goal.” –Kate Hogan

Shortly after announcing her second eco-friendly fashion collaboration, Emma Watson has expanded her stylish résumé yet again, this time for a “green” capsule collection with Italian designer Alberta Ferretti. According to WWD, the line, called Pure Threads, consists of five pieces: two dresses, a shirt, a long skirt and a pair of denim shorts, all enriched with lace embroideries and made with organic fabrics such as cotton poplin, cotton muslin and hemp. “Emma had a Jane-Birkin-in-the-Seventies image in mind,” Ferretti told WWD about the starlet’s inspiration. A portion of proceeds from the collection will be donated to People Tree, a nonprofit organization Watson supports. “I’m pleased that a luxury brand such as Alberta Ferretti has decided to create ecological clothes,” said Watson. “I believe this is a big step forward for all of the international fashion industry, but also an important step for an increased sensitivity to the problem of ecology.” Pure Threads will be available exclusively on albertaferretti.com beginning March 21. –Kim Peiffer

See Emma Watson’s Newest Campaign for People Tree!

Emma Watson is showing the world that fashion can be eco-friendly through her latest Fairtrade Fortnight collection with People Tree. In this video from the new campaign, Watson shows off some pieces from the new spring/summer collection, which promotes the issue of sustainability in the fashion industry. “The design process continued with me trying on each and every piece to get the fits just as I wanted them and then I visited Bangladesh to see the clothing actually being made and meet the people making it,” said Watson. “It was an incredible and life-changing experience –I really wish everyone had the chance to see the difference Fair Trade makes with their own eyes.” And she says there’s many things about fair trade clothing that may surprise us. “Fair Trade fashion is often completely handmade – and made of 100% natural and organic cotton – and it’s a small miracle that we as consumers can participate in a process that is keeping skills and communities alive and helping them to prosper.” Look for dresses made from silk gingham checks, florals, polka-dot handweaves and jersey wrap arounds, as well as more relaxed styles in the form of  playsuits, harems and kimono jersey shirts. Shop the collection at peopletree.co.uk. –Kim Peiffer
