Chris Martin is a lucky man! The Coldplay rocker’s leading ladies — collaborator Rihanna and wife Gwyneth Paltrow — paused for a hot shot Sunday night while backstage at the Grammy Awards, showing off their slim figures and similar, slinky gowns. Rihanna worked the room in custom Giorgio Armani (she’s currently a face of the designer’s denim and underwear lines), while Paltrow wowed in a long black number with a solid gold belt.

Later in the night, Rihanna joined Martin and his bandmates for a medley of her “We Found Love” and their “Princess of China” and “Paradise.” Rocking leather shorts and a crop top — plus her new blonde do — the singer got the excitable crowd going. Meanwhile, Paltrow introduced the night’s big winner, Adele, before the beloved Brit took to the stage for a highly praised rendition of “Rolling in the Deep.”

Rihanna and Paltrow were among the night’s few style standouts; Adele and Carrie Underwood were both red carpet winners, too, though many stars failed to impress (or shock) this time around. Though Nicki Minaj’s slightly sacrilegious look drew mild criticism, no one seemed to go too crazy this year — not even Lady Gaga (and that’s saying a lot). When it comes to style, Shailene Woodley is on both sides of the fence.

“I really don’t know anything about fashion,” The Descendants star told FASHIONetc at Thursday’s Honor runway presentation during New York Fashion Week. “This is my first fashion show ever.”

And though the Oscars are only weeks away, the 20-year-old has lax specifications for her gown. “I have to be able to breathe,” she says. “I have to be able to have a food baby, and if I’m going to be sweaty, I need a dress that won’t show my sweat marks.”

But despite her nonchalance, Woodley also has her convictions: “I would do it again in a heartbeat,” she tells New York of the much-maligned (and much-criticized) barefoot running shoes she wore to a Golden Globes after-party.

“If people spent as much time thinking about the genocides going on in Africa and around the world as they do the shoes that actors wear to after-parties, the world would be a much more peaceful environment.”

Move over Victoria, Marc Jacobs has a new BFF!

This Sunday, Miss Piggy will wear custom Louis Vuitton to host The Orange BAFTA Red Carpet show. ”Moi on the Red Carpet at the BAFTAs wearing Louis Vuitton designed by my dear friend Marc Jacobs,” she says in a release. “We have a word for that in Hollywood: Va-va-va-voom.”

The dress (above) features an iconic ’50s-inspired silhouette with an embellished bustier and a sequined bow. The cleft-foot hottie will also squeeze into bow-topped satin heels and an embossed clutch.

DEMURE VS. DARING: WEIGH IN ON SUNDAY’S GRAMMY STYLE PICKS! 

With those sculpted limbs, an army of LBDs and gleaming locks, Jennifer Aniston is timeless — and logic defying.

“I don’t feel my age,” she says in the March issue of InStyle. “I feel young every day. It’s in the spirit.”

Crediting cardio, a balanced diet and an arsenal of must-have products for her looks, the Wanderlust star confesses she is a creature of habit. “On the red carpet, it’s time for me to start doing something different,” she says. “I play it very safe because I just want to be comfortable … if I could wear a jersey tank that went down to the floor, I would.”

The natural brunette is also considering ditching the golden hue that has become her trademark. “I’ve been thinking about dyeing my hair a dark brown,” she says. “I feel it would be healthier.”

But while she approaches beauty with a seasoned pragmatism, Aniston says boyfriend Justin Theroux‘s convictions do not affect her own. ”He has great style,” she confesses. “It’s very specific, and it has been his style forever. WEIGH IN ON MORE RED CARPET STYLE IN ‘LAST NIGHT’S LOOK: HIT OR MISS?’

With so many choices to pick from, it’s not exactly a coincidence when style stars like Michelle Williams and Kate Bosworth select feminine frocks from the same London-based label.

Best known for micro floral prints and unabashedly feminine silhouettes, Erdem has become an offbeat industry darling. After Claudia Schiffer wore a runway look from his debut ready-to-wear collection in 2006, the designer went on to gain critical and capital success when Barneys New York became the brand’s primary stockist. (The Duchess of Cambridge helped put him on the map, as well.)

In the past several months, A-listers have flocked to the lines ethereal frocks and punchy separates, alike. For the New York screening of My Week with Marilyn, Michelle Williams selected an embroidered slip, while ingénue Elizabeth Olsen made a statement in a $4,085 trademark print crepe de chine gown. Kate Bosworth looked capricious in a canary, off-shoulder frock from the line’s spring 2012 collection, while Jessica Alba paired extra pops of color with the brand’s printed stovepipes.

“I never think about what’s sexy,” the designer has said of his creations. “I focus on the silhouettes and the proportions and hope that takes care of everything.”

Octavia Spencer dazzled at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, but the actress admits that slipping into her Tadashi Shoji gown took a little extra work.

“I was not a Girl Scout, but I tried to be very prepared,” she joked on the Ellen DeGeneres Show Tuesday. “I triple-Spanxed, which is not good. Spanx really, really work, but you don’t need to overdo it.”

Though the actress cut a fine figure Sunday — and picked up the award for best supporting actress — she wasn’t feeling so great during the post-SAG celebrations. “I could not party that night because I was being pinched in places I didn’t know it was possible,” she joked.

Luckily she had a girlfriend who felt her pain: fellow nominee Melissa McCarthy (who’s had a major Spanx moment of her own). “I was like, ‘Oh my god Melissa, I’m about to die, my Spanx are killing me,’” Spencer recalled. “And she said, ‘I just went to the bathroom and took mine off.’”

Rose Byrne gave us a lot to look at during Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards: her gorgeous face, for one, but also her interesting white jumpsuit and face-framing bob. So we had to ask: What was the story behind her look?

“I tried this on a couple of years ago,” Byrne told PEOPLE of her glimmering Elie Saab jumpsuit. “I loved it for an event and it just didn’t end up being the one that I wore. But I always had it in my mind.”

Once she decided she wanted to wear pants to the SAGs, Byrne called up her stylist, Penny Lovell, who immediately knew which look to pull. “[She] was like, ‘How about that great jumpsuit we tried on from Elie Saab?’” Byrne recalled. “And I was like, ‘Oh that? Let’s go!’ So that was it. I love jumpsuits.”

Though Byrne’s bob was somewhat old news by comparison — she first cut it several months ago — the actress had the look freshened by John Frieda stylist Harry Josh before the awards (her makeup was by Joe Fresh Beauty). “Just yesterday, he did another cut and he did the back and then he did the bangs again,” she explained during the SAG Awards Gala at the Shrine Auditorium. “It’s Scarface-inspired. She sometimes wears outfits too complex to understand, but Tilda Swinton’s role as a fashion icon is indisputable. So it’s surprising to hear that the most major tool in the actress’s arsenal of style is something, well, quite unconventional.

“For me, it’s just a matter of having a box cutter to open the [dress] box,” she told PEOPLE at New York’s Core Club Tuesday night during a screening of Here, a short film she co-wrote for the Luxury Collection Hotels and Resorts. “I turn up in a pair of old corduroy trousers, and I’m very fortunate to have friends who send me boxes [with gowns],” she continued. “It’s like the Cinderella complex. It’s the friends that make the effort, not me.”

Swinton, who wore a sharp white Céline suit to Tuesday’s event, said that often, her couture outfits fit with minimal tailoring. “There is a little effort that goes into the planning, like, weeks ago,” she admitted, “but at this stage, it’s only a matter of opening the box.”

That will likely be the procedure Sunday night, when Swinton dresses up for the Screen Actors Guild awards (she’s nominated for best actress for We Need to Talk About Kevin). However, with her film out of the Oscar race, the actress doesn’t think she’ll attend the big awards on Feb. 26 — and is slightly relieved she won’t be looking for yet another outfit. “It would be a luxury problem,” she said, “but it’s a win-win situation, if you know what I mean.”

Regardless, Swinton’s friends and admirers (Anne Hathaway and Simon Doonan among them) always look forward to the star’s fashion moments. “It’s effortless,” model Agyness Deyn, who stars in Here, told PEOPLE. “She’s so talented … such an amazing person.” Tell us: Are you a fan of Swinton’s style?

At Thursday’s Swarovski Crystallized Unsigned Model Search Event in London, Helena Christensen (right) added intrigue to a patterned shift with striped, blue tights and a neon-green purse. Previous supporters of the unusual frocks include Charlize Theron, who selected a one-shouldered mini for the L.A. premiere of Young Adult, Gwyneth Paltrow, who celebrated Coach’s 70th anniversary in a one-sleeved version and Nicole Kidman, who sported a burgundy column at the Country Music Awards.

We have to admit something: though we love (love, love, love) Elizabeth Banks, we haven’t ever thought of her as much of a fashion star. Until now. In the last week, Banks has blown us away with the sleek, sexy looks she’s sported while promoting her new film, Man on a Ledge.

Last Wednesday, Banks popped by the New York City premiere of Haywire in a ruffled Theyskens’ Theory dress, gold-trimmed jacket, Amrapali earrings and a zipper-trim Lauren Merkin clutch. The next night she was out again, this time in a sultry one-shoulder Versace dress paired with pretty jewels, major booties and some seriously smoky eyes.

But her best look yet has to be the one she rocked Monday night at her film’s Los Angeles premiere: a gold Emilio Pucci mini that totally sparkled. In less than two weeks, five of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading ladies selected similar looks from Valentino’s spring/summer 2012 collection.

For the Jan. 9 Rome premiere of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara wore a scarlet, tiered gown with piqued sleeves and sheer paneling. In the days that followed, both Jessica Alba and Kristen Bell attended awards season soirees in leather-accented styles, while Kirsten Dunst and Kate Bosworth opted for slightly more black-tie versions of the same silhouette.

Valentino is “synonymous with red carpet and glamour,” Alba’s stylist Brad Goreski tells PEOPLE of the seasonal collection’s appeal. For his client, “the combination of leather and lace was absolutely perfect” for the InStyle and Forevermark Golden Globes pre-party because of its “mixture of ladylike and edgy” qualities.

The Bravo star credits the line’s “sort of whimsical quality” as an enduring red-carpet trend, but says that unexpected details manage to keep the dresses young. “That is why for stylists, it’s a sure thing,” he declares, adding, “you know if one of your girls is wearing Valentino, it’s going to be a good moment.”

ON A BUDGET? GET STAR LOOKS FOR LESS! 

Though Vanessa Hudgens is consistently glam on the red carpet, even her favorite looks get relegated to the back of the closet.

“I go to a bunch of events,” she tells PEOPLE. “Normally when I wear a dress, I only wear it once.”

Taking advantage of this stylish surplus, the actress is auctioning off the one-of-kind Candie’s Couture gown she wore to last year’s MTV Movie Awards (left), with all proceeds benefiting Stand Up 2 Cancer.

“I’m just trying to raise awareness,” she says of the endeavor, which starts Monday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. EST/ 4 p.m. PST. “It’s exciting.”

Other things she’s excited about include her new website, VanessaHudgensOfficial, where she blogs about film and music — and posts personal photos, thanks to the iPhone app Instagram. “It’s slightly addicting,” she says, laughing. “You can take a picture of a cup and it will look incredible.”

When it comes to looking good on days off, she relies on a fail-proof ensemble: “A funky long dress with a bunch of bracelets and a bunch of necklaces and a cool floppy hat.”

And while she and pal Ashley Tisdale often buy the same things — “It’s always been like that,” she shares — Hudgens relies on personal flair to avoid identical outfits. ”It’s all about accessorizing,” she says. “As long as you accessorize, you can make anything yours.”

Recycling is chic, but is recycling a red carpet dress a fashion faux pas? Carey Mulligan may be pondering that question today after she wore Roland Mouret’s “Carstone” berry red jersey dress twice in a span of two weeks.

The Shame star first stepped out in the girly frock on Jan. 6 during a party in Los Angeles, pairing the look with black peep-toe pumps. Then Thursday, Mulligan surfaced in London, this time wearing her Mouret with blue suede heels at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards.

We love the dress — and Mulligan! — and the U.K.’s Telegraph even speculates there’s a method to her manner of dress: Colin Firth’s wife, Livia, is launching her Green Carpet Challenge, asking actresses to wear eco-friendly or pre-worn gowns during awards season. According to the paper, Firth persuaded an A-list star to rule the red carpet in recycled looks, so perhaps Mulligan is her girl? Regardless, we want to know what you think of the double take. Everything about Kate Hudson‘s look is enviable: her pretty eyes, her flawless figure, that shiny hair. But as it turns out, much of her beauty routine is based around a $37 jar of cream.

“I try to use natural products,” Hudson, the latest face of Almay (seen here in a behind-the-scenes shot from her Smart Shade Perfect & Correct Primer campaign), tells PEOPLE. “Sometimes I’ll just put Egyptian Magic on my face. I use it for everything.” In fact, the gentle cream — made of olive oil, beeswax, honey, bee pollen, royal jelly and propolis extract — is the key to her ocean-kissed locks, too.

“This is going to sound crazy,” she says, “but I literally put Egyptian Magic in my hair. When it’s damp, I’ll scrunch some of it in my hair and let it dry.”

Growing up with mom Goldie Hawn in charge, Hudson says she had lots of freedom with her hair, makeup and clothing choices. “I came out pretty much putting on whatever I wanted,” she shares. “I think I was more vocal than my mom about style than she was with me about style.”

That freedom of expression led her to her signature boho aesthetic — “I get it if somebody calls me bohemian,” she says — and likely helped her develop her red carpet style, too. “I don’t think I ever feel red carpet ready,” she jokes. “You’re always wondering if something’s hanging out or if your eyelash is falling off.”

The 14-year-old, who says she’d “rather look like a 2-year-old than a 21-year-old,” selected the same off-the-shoulder seafoam frock (spring look #8 to be precise) for an appearance at the Jan. 12 Critics’ Choice Awards (left).

WEIGH IN ON MORE STYLISH SHOWDOWNS IN: ‘FASHION FACEOFF‘

Thanks to her star-studded client list, Rachel Zoe has “too many” favorite red carpet moments to count. But a handful of breathtaking dresses do stand out in the celebrity stylist’s mind.

“I think Anne Hathaway has had a few winners,” she told PEOPLE at the W Magazine Best Performances Issue party in West Hollywood recently. “Her Armani Privé last year for the Globes (left) is one of my favorites.”

Though she dressed Hathaway in a stunning seven looks for the 2011 Oscars, Zoe said the Globes gown resonated with her “because it was super-glamorous in a very kind of vintage Hollywood way, but also extremely modern, and I loved that.”

Aside from her “Annie,” Zoe said Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson have “had too many great moments to name.” But that could be because she had a hand in their styling. “I’m biased toward my clients,” she joked. Tell us: Which stars do you love to see on the red carpet?

RELIVE THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS FROM THE 2012 GOLDEN GLOBES

At Sunday’s star-studded Golden Globes, Madonna took home the award for best original song, effectively dissed Ricky Gervais and looked majorly glam in second-skin Reem Acra … but her stay-sexy secret is a lot more basic than you’d think.

“I’d say my fishnets, but I am not wearing any tonight, so that’s kind of a lie,” she told reporters backstage at the Globes before declaring, “Victoria’s Secret underpants” as her wardrobe necessity. (Tweezers are her travel beauty must, she added.)

Undergarments aside, the Queen of Pop relies on dancing to keep her sinewy body in tip-top shape. “The best thing for your bum is dancing, and I can do plenty of that,” she joked.

Madonna’s take-no-prisoners attitude even affects her styling decisions. “I am wearing a dress by a designer named Reem Acra, and I love it,” she gushed of her bodice-topped gown. “I feel like I am wearing chain mail and I am ready to go to battle.”

IT’S NOT OVER YET! REVISIT PEOPLE’S BEST DRESSED AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES!

We admit we were drooling over Elle MacPherson last night — that body! that hair! — but some other ladies on the Golden Globes red carpet also had us doing double takes. Octavia Spencer, Melissa McCarthy and Amber Riely all swathed their curves in gorgeous designer gowns, highlighting their best features and leaving us with a case of fashion envy.

Spencer — who nabbed a best supporting actress award and gave another moving acceptance speech — looked lovely in a lavender Tadashi Shoji V-neck cap-sleeve gown with jewel detail. The Help star was still searching for a Globes gown last week, but definitely found a winner.

Meanwhile, funnygirl McCarthy opted against a design from her own label, and instead chose a long-sleeved V-neck emerald gown by Badgley Mischka, sticking with several of the night’s big trends. Glee‘s Riley selected a dress by the esteemed design duo, too, rocking the red carpet in a strapless fire-engine dress.

Leave it to celebrities to make an old trend new again. Headbands — once the preferred accessory of third-graders everywhere — made a triumphant return to the red carpet last night on actresses Michelle Williams, Charlize Theron and Busy Philipps.

Williams kept her blonde pixie under wraps in a vintage Fred Leighton for Forevermark headband, while Theron accentuated her soft do with a vintage Cartier band. Meanwhile, Cougartown‘s Busy Philipps put her own twist on the trend, using a simple platinum band to keep her updo in place.

She left the Golden Globes empty-handed — sorry, New Girl — but Zooey Deschanel’s hands were pretty happy anyway. Before hitting the red carpet, the actress posted a photo of her fingernails, which were all done up with bow ties and buttons.

“I am wearing a gown but my nails are wearing tuxedos!!!” she Tweeted, along with a picture of the nifty nail art. The star’s gown was a custom Prada dark-green silk dress with an open back; the top featured black and emerald-green glass pearls.

Though Deschanel’s critically acclaimed show didn’t win any awards, the newly single actress seemed to have a great time, arriving at the Globes with sister Emily (a new mom and the star of Bones) and hanging out with good pal and former costar, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
