Three Things We Must Discuss: Cannes Edition

Cannes just keeps getting better and better, but with all the dresses, jewels and fabulous shoes parading by, it’s possible to miss some of the details. Here, we call out three things you’ve gotta see before the next round of gowns this evening.

Carey Mulligan’s Majorly Expensive Earrings: It’s no surprise to see mega-watt jewels on the red carpet at the French film festival (Chopard is an official partner, after all), but even with all that bling, it’s still possible to stop us in our tracks. Mulligan did just that at the Great Gatsby premiere, accenting her pale pink Dior Haute Couture gown with red lips — and a pair of Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings from the Blue Book Collection worth $1.15 million. Add another $112,000 in diamonds in her bracelet and we think she’s got a jewelry collection even Daisy Buchanan would envy.

File it under: Not at All Shocking. Gisele Bündchen looks good in a dress.

The gorgeous supermodel (you know, the one who has hair even the queen of good hair, Jennifer Aniston, is jealous of, and legs, abs, skin and a husband the rest of the world is jealous of) landed herself at the top of PEOPLE’s Most Loved Looks list this week in her pretty lace mini.

Ever look at a major red carpet (like the Oscars, or Monday’s Met Gala) and think to yourself, “Gee, I’d love to buy that!”?

Well, you’re usually out of luck, because the outfits are frequently custom-made and fitted just for the lucky star wearing the look.

But this Met Gala was all about bucking tradition, and it’s done just that by providing plenty of outlets to pick up a few of your own choice designer duds — provided you’ve got the cash, of course.

Met Gala 2013 Nail Art: The Night’s Top Tips

Had enough of all the gowns yet? Then it’s time to talk details, starting with the punked-out nailpolish we saw on some of our favorite stars.

Blake Lively: To accent her vine-embroidered Gucci Première gown, celebrity manicurist Elle put together a complicated mix of Red Carpet Manicure’s “Always Slate Never Early,” “Fake Bake” and “Black Stretch Limo,” then added rhinestones and glitter to create a vine effect that also seemed to pay homage to the night’s “Punk” theme, looking like hardcore chipped black polish from a distance.

Met Gala 2013: Three Beauty Looks We’ve Still Got to Discuss

May/07/2013 at 10:30 AM ET

We’ve talked fauxhawks. We’ve talked smoky eyes. But we have not yet discussed these three major beauty moments, and it’s about time.

First up: January Jones’s straight-up Black Swan makeup look. From the bleached eyebrows to the dramatic black liner, we hardly recognized our dear Betty Draper — and we kinda liked it. It was bold and brazen, but was it a hit?

Also on the daring end of the eyeshadow spectrum, Emily Blunt opted for a bold wash of fuschia shadow that totally played against the conservative vibe of her Carolina Herrera gown. Between that and her fierce Lorraine Schwartz danglers, she embodied the phrase “if looks could kill.” To get the sizzling pink, NARS makeup artist Jenn Streicher got creative, using the line’s “Jardin des Plantes” satin lip pencil topped with Desire powder blush.

And finally, Elizabeth Banks’s long, clipped-up ponytail, which didn’t quite qualify for our fauxhawk roundup, but it was head-turning nonetheless.

Tell us: Whose look did you like most: Jones’s, Blunt’s or Banks’s? Would you try any in your everyday life?

3 Trends Spotted at the Met Gala: Spikes, Gloves & Punktastic Hair Color

May/07/2013 at 09:00 AM ET

After you’ve clicked through all the amazing (we use that word in a good and bad way) looks stars wore to the annual Met Ball, scroll down to see the punk-ish style themes that kept popping up on the red carpet.

SPIKES: There was perhaps no trend more ubiquitous than these bad boys. Jessica Alba (carrying a Christian Louboutin clutch) and Cameron Diaz (in a golden belt) looked ready to skewer vegetables for a barbecue, while Cara Delevingne reminds us of a sexy porcupine in her sharply studded Burberry gown.

GLOVES: Unlike those spikes, we never could have predicted the presence of these ladylike accessories at Fashion Prom for Punks. But Kerry Washington and Beyoncé wore them with their gowns. And then there was Kim Kardashian, who wore gloves attached to her dress and in the same print.

PUNK HAIR COLOR: Lily Collins (rocking blue streaks), Diane Kruger (who dip-dyed her ponytail pink) and Alicia Keys (with red highlights) are giving us flashbacks to the Manic Panic-fueled days of middle school. Wonder if any of them, including Kerry Washington with her purple-ish mane, will keep the color after the Ball has ended.

Which of these trends would you consider trying?

Five Ways to Fauxhawk, as Seen at the Met Gala

Normally, we’d call fauxhawks ‘pretty crazy,’ but given that we’ve seen this, this and this at Monday night’s Met Gala in New York City … they’re actually almost ‘pretty tame’ by comparison. However, when you’ve got Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani and Julianne Moore all sporting similar hairstyles at the same major punk-themed event, you most certainly have a trend. One that we’re not sure we’d try, but that we’re loving on these stars.

Lopez’s gravity-defying look was a major departure from her typical waves and curls, calling to mind, perhaps, a long-haired, brunette Pink. Emily Blunt took an elegant approach to her hair, opting for some voluminous twists at the front leading to a messy updo at her crown. Stefani brought us (fittingly) back to her punkier days a bit, opting for a serious side-part and bangs to go with her topknot.
