Jennifer Lopez's Pants/Dress Combo Platter Inspires an Editor Debate: 'Obsessed or Hot Mess?'

Jul/07/2014 at 03:26 PM ET

Jennifer Lopez is never one to play it safe on the style front — and this latest look, an Atelier Versace high-fashion jumpsuit-slash-dress, is just another notch on her risk-taker belt. And much like any fashion-forward ensemble, it inspired a debate in the PEOPLE StyleWatch offices. Below, we take sides; read on, then tell us where you fall on the great jumpsuit/dress pro/con spectrum.

OBSESSED: Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: I have been experiencing jumpsuit fatigue lately. I love the trend, and I have a few onesies hanging in my closet, but it’s becoming a little stale on the red carpet. So when Jennifer Lopez introduced this gown-meets-pants Versace creation at the label’s Paris show, I got very excited. In my opinion, it’s like the jumpsuit’s sassy older sister. Plus, it fit her body impeccably and gave me flashbacks to old-school JLo. To be clear, I don’t think this look would work for just any formal occasion (and if Forever 21 or H&M comes out with a look-for-less version, I’m not sure that I’d be brave enough to wear it), but it was a very refreshing outfit compared to the other expected gowns or minis that we usually see on the carpet. And it has two editors involved in a really fun fashion debate, which I think was the whole point.

HOT MESS: Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I can’t be “over” jumpsuits because I was never “under” jumpsuits (yes, Friends jokes, still as fresh today as they were 15 years ago). But I can grudgingly admit that in certain circumstances, on certain stars, they can look as fun or elegant as a dress. I haven’t, however, ever felt the need to see a jumpsuit combined with a dress. But Jenny from the Block has been answering questions I haven’t asked since way back in 1999, and this Atelier Versace look is no different. “What would a high-slit gown look like with one sparkly rogue trouser look like?” I never wondered, and here’s the result. Listen, I’ll give J.Lo points for choosing a risky outfit — but then I’m going to take all those points away for her “bronzer by exhaust pipe” makeup job.

With whom do you agree? Can this outfit be saved — or is it perfect as is?

Rihanna's Paris Fashion Week Style: Plenty of Plunge, Fur and Completely Sheer Tops (Bien Sûr)

When you think Paris Fashion Week, you might think structured skirts, chic sunglasses and elegant couture. And then there’s Rihanna‘s version of Paris Fashion Week, which includes thigh-highs and garters, lots of fur and some crazy bold accessories. She keep us guessing, which is why never tire of talking about her unique fashion choices (who else would splurge on something like $837 socks?). That’s why we can’t wait to hear what you think about her latest round of head-turning outfits.

The singer kicked things off at Balmain Thursday (she’s the brand’s face) in an allover army green ensemble. The wow factor part of the look? The leather belted trench coat sans bra underneath. Next — the most covered up look of the bunch — RiRi went for a charcoal gray slacks, a peplum jacket and fur stole to catch all the front row action at Lanvin. And Friday she selected a red furry coat over an itty-bitty black dress by Dior for the label’s show. And to give the look more of a burlesque feel, she added thigh-high stockings and garters, a pearl necklace and leather gloves.

Katy Perry and Her New Haircut Hit the Runway at Milan Fashion Week

Katy Perry is having the buzziest week ever. From her new banged bob to all that engagement ring talk to her performance at the Brit Awards and the release of her new “Dark Horse” video, the star keeps making headlines. And Thursday she continued on “The Katy Perry Self-Promotional Tour” (we’re not knocking … just cheering from the sidelines!) by hitting the Moschino runway at Milan Fashion Week.

From the photo at left, you can tell the singer practiced her sassy catwalk skills, confidently strutting her stuff in head-to-toe garb from the label: a black topper with gold chain trim, coordinating leather mini dress (with more gold bling!), sheer tights and some serious heels. She also continues to sport a handkerchief headband to frame her new short do.

Thursday’s show was designer Jeremy Scott’s debut collection for Moschino, and he enlisted not only Perry, but also Rita Ora to kick things off on the catwalk before they took their front row seats.

As for the rest of the runway? We can totally see Perry and Ora rocking the McDonald’s inspired designs or maybe even some SpongeBob couture. Tell us: What do you think of Perry’s runway cameo?

Happy Birthday Rihanna! We're Celebrating Your 27th Year With Three Pretty Dress Suggestions

Feb/20/2014 at 05:38 PM ET

We we’re having a hard time coming up with a post to celebrate Rihanna‘s 26th birthday. We wanted to do a throwback roundup of our favorite RiRi looks (this dress wins every time) or wackiest Instagram moments, but we bet you follow her and are up to speed on all that. Then we considered some gift suggestions — this faux leather skirt tops our list — but that’s all we came up with, because it’s impossible to buy for the girl who has everything (not to mention a steady stream of gifts from every designer known to man).

So we decided to come up with a list of things she should wear now that she’s officially entered her late twenties. We’re not suggesting she throw her bold style choices out the window, but in case she wants to tone it down a little (like maybe ditch the crazy prints and veils), we picked out three looks we’d love to see the star wear from fashion weeks in Milan, London and New York.
