Valerie Bertinelli Reveals the Secrets Behind Her Bikini Body Fitness Routine

On Rachael Ray today, Valerie Bertinelli and her trainer Christopher Ross Lane reveal how the star got her amazing bikini-body at 49 years old. The best news is you can follow her routine at home — just like Valerie. “He came up with a program that was so simple. Not easy, but simple,” said the Jenny Craig spokesmodel, who just released an exercise video called Losing It and Keeping Fit. “It still takes a lot to do, but we need to tell everybody, because anybody can do this. We did it in my living room.” Lane stresses that Valerie’s workout routine was really “back to basics,” adding that he had the star doing “step ups on the coffee table.” “Your body is your own best tool!” the star trainer said. “You don’t need to have weights, you don’t need fancy equipment. You can just do a lot of squats.” Valerie even surprised herself—by learning to like running. “He said he’s going to make her a runner, and I was like ‘yeah right.’ The first twenty minutes I hate, I hate!” says Bertinelli, who lost 40 pounds on Jenny Craig. “And then once the endorphins kick in, it’s OK … and he had me running a half marathon.” See the full episode on today’s Rachael Ray.—Kristin Larson

WATCH: Valerie Bertinelli Shares Her Get-Fit Secrets

After getting in bikini-body shape with Jenny Craig earlier this year, Valerie Bertinelli is turning exercise guru, and she took a little time out to talk with PEOPLE why she wanted to launch her new get-fit video, Losing It and Keeping Fit. “So many people asked me how I got in shape. Was it difficult? Was it easy? How did you do it?” she says. And the secret was simple, according to the star. “They’re exercises that anyone can do, anywhere in your home, and I thought, ‘well, why not?’ I don’t like to keep secrets anyway, so I just want people to know how I did it. ‘Why not?’” The biggest benefit to toning up? “My closet isn’t a scary place to go anymore,” she laughs. “I go into my closet and I have more choices than I’ve ever had… So it’s fun for me now.” Watch to hear what the biggest change is in her body since she started the routine and more.

Martha Stewart on Staying Fit: “Convenience Food Is Just Not In My Vocabulary”

Courtesy Body+Soul

Martha Stewart has built a career on living well, and in the newest issue of Body and Soul she’s letting the world know when it comes to staying fit, counting calories will never make her cut as “a good thing.” The talk show host joins forces with her daughter Alexis in their wellness magazine to dish on how they keep in shape without denying themselves. “It is great to share with our readers some of my and Alexis’ tips in how we stay fit and healthy,” Martha tells PEOPLE of what prompted a fitness focus. “We have lots of routines for good eating, fitness, beauty and living that we will be including in future issues of Body and Soul.” So just what are their top tips? Well, for starters, “Convenience food is just not in my vocabulary,” Martha says, revealing that she loves nothing more than farm-fresh, organic produce and dairy. The mother-daughter team also shares a love of fitness, which includes yoga classes and regular sessions with a personal trainer — with Martha hitting her home gym at 6:30 A.M. daily. “Yoga is incredibly relaxing, but strenuous, too,” she says. But for those of us who can’t afford our own trainer, she reveals a favorite budget-friendly fitness alternative: cleaning. “I’ve never had a housekeeper and I never will,” she says, “Cleaning does it for me.” Get more of Martha and Alexis’s indulgences, must-haves, and stress cures in Body and Soul — and be sure to tune into The Martha Stewart Show on September 23rd to see Alexis appear alongside her mother and the magazine’s editor Terri Trespico to talk more about their personal health and fitness routines.

Tennis’s Top Players Get Inspired By N.Y.C for Their U.S. Open Looks

Al Bello/Nike

When Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal take the court at the US Open, tennis fans will have more to ooh and ah over than their speedy serves and flawless forehands. The superstar athletes have all teamed up with Nike to create the winning outfits that take their inspiration from New York City itself. Yesterday, Nike along with Roger, Serena and Rafael gave the Big Apple a sneak peek, including a classic red and black look for new dad Federer, meant to highlight his debonaire charm. Rafael Nadal got his desire for something bold and bright with a vibrant yellow and turquoise top inspired by the city’s taxi cabs. Serena Williams also was feeling bold, hence her hot pink scoop neck tank dress. Maria Sharapova wanted to play up her best features on the court — her shoulders. Working with Nike, the tennis pro created two looks, a soft pink racerback dress with electric yellow piping and a navy racerback number with shimmering silver contrast that was inspired by the New York City skyline — and don’t forget about her Tiffany & Co. earrings designed by Frank Gehry. We can’t wait for the Open to begin on August 31. Will you be watching?

Lauren Conrad Dishes on Style, Exercise and the “Boyfriend Layer”

Courtesy of Shape Magazine

She might be a bona fide California beach girl, but even Lauren Conrad admits to slacking in the exercise department sometimes. For her second Shape cover (her first was January 2008), the New York Times best-selling author chats about her romance with actor Kyle Howard and her new clothing line for Kohl’s while sitting pretty for three very different cover shots. At the beginning of her relationship, Lauren admits to getting soft around the middle. “I call it the ‘boyfriend layer’,” she tells the magazine. “We were having more romantic dinners out, and I was exercising less.” So what’s a girl to do? Take your dates to the gym, of course! “I just ask Kyle, ‘You feel like working out?’ It’s more fun than hitting the gym alone,” says Lauren. The couple spends most of their time outdoors anyway. “We like doing outdoor stuff: tennis, bike riding, kayaking, stand-up surfing, hiking in the canyons around L.A.,” says Lauren. And when the happy couple isn’t exercising together, Lauren is busy working on her newest adventure in design, LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s, which will hit stores in October. Her line of affordable and flattering jeans and blouses will be perfect for every shape. “It’s all about finding silhouettes that highlight the best parts of your figure,” says Lauren. As an added bonus, Lauren took three lucky Shape readers with very different body types shopping and shared some fashion advice with them. Pick up the September issue of Shape to hear more of Lauren’s advice on dressing for your body and working out.

The former Girls Next Door star, who recently told PEOPLE.com that the active couple hikes, bikes and spends time in the bedroom to maintain their hot bodies, is adding a new routine to her fitness regimen: hitting the pole! “I’m an outdoors girl so it’s hard to find fun ways to exercise in my house that keep me from getting bored,” she says in a post on her Web site. “I’m like a little monkey and love to swing around on things. So that’s why I decided to create my own line of sports poles which will be coming out soon!” And stay tuned: The former centerfold, who recently took a professional lesson with fitness instructor Estee Zaka to finesse her pole work, also promises to post her own video of pole workout tips on her Web site.
