In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we noticed that stars were really into bright lips and long dresses. And with one notable exception, celebs were really enjoying playing up their natural complexions.
In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we noticed that stars were really into bold prints and patterns — but leaving their heavy winter wear behind.
Up: Funky shoes. No silly-putty pumps or boring black heels for many stars this week. In fact, both AnnaSophia Robb and Katy Perry wore head-turning flats from Aldo, while we saw sexy studded heels on Olivia Wilde and colorful striped sandals on Olivia Palermo. We’re now fighting the urge to do a total shoe closet overhaul.
Up: Bold Pants Outfits.Selena Gomez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hailee Steinfeld and even Jennifer Aniston all ditched pretty dresses for something much more striking and statement-making: the dramatic pantsuit. Strong shoulders, graphic prints and structured tailoring made these looks totally traffic-stopping.
Down: Heavy, Dark Looks. Don’t get us wrong: We like all the components of Sarah Jessica Parker’s look individually. But at a time when hemlines are getting higher, tights are getting stashed and coats are headed to the dry-cleaners before going into storage, this whole outfit together feels a little drab. Nothing wrong with a coat worn as a dress (as Princess Kate knows well): It just needs a slimmer silhouette and a more spring-friendly fabric.
This week’s hottest trends were all about lightening (and loosening) up for spring.
Up: Cute Jackets. What do you do, clothing-wise, on a spring day that ranges from 30° to 75° within a few hours? If you’re a celeb like, say, Michelle Williams (above left, in Kate Young for Target), January Jones, Nikki Reed or Olivia Palermo, you plan a whole outfit around your favorite blazer or duster. No more hiding them under a coat — now’s the time to show them off! Read More

This week, stars tried all sorts of fun things on the red carpet — but they almost unanimously left one shoe style in the dust.
Up: Mixing Brights. Yes, Gwyneth Paltrow‘s grape Victoria Beckham mini is adorable on its own, but pairing it with those tangerine Michael Kors sandals elevates the look infinitely. This is a much easier way to try the ongoing mix-and-match trend than, say, mixing prints — but though the difficulty factor is low, the impact is still just as high (see: Emmy Rossum here). Try this with unexpected color pairings, like lemon and lime, magenta and cobalt or emerald and violet. Read More

Yes, we’re looking forward to trying these two hot-right-now red carpet trends, but what we’re most excited about is the fact that it’s just about time to stash our tights out of sight for the next nine months.
Up: Lucite Clutches. Everyone from Elisabeth Moss to Solange Knowles to Rosario Dawson, above, has been spotted carrying these crystal-clear, hard-sided bags. They look so cool and modern that we’re ready to give this trend a try, with one major caveat: we don’t have special handlers to carry the seven million things we normally need in our purse, so the effect might be somewhat less striking. Looking to do a little spring cleaning this weekend? Here’s a handy guide to the hair and
clothing styles that stars are loving more than ever these days — as well as one that’s starting to fizzle.
Up: Center parts. After years of side-parted, beachy waves, it looks like we’re heading into the “center-parted, stick straight” phase of popular hairstyles. In addition to Jessica Szhor, we saw this dramatic do on Lana Del Rey, Kaley Cuoco and Emilia Clarke. Warning: this hairstyle is not for everyone, but if you’re feeling flatiron-happy these days, now’s your moment. Read More
If you make it a habit to model your looks after what’s hot in Hollywood (we do!), you’re going to want to check out this week’s style prospectus, which breaks down the two trends on the rise (you’ve seen ‘em both before, but not like this!) and a dress silhouette that is on its way out. And we can’t say we’re sad to see it go.
Up: Center slits. Once a side show, slits are migrating to the front and back of dresses, providing a sexy, yet subtler touch. Olivia Wilde wore one on her sequined Gucci gown for a killer rearview. Kirsten Dunst also selected a dress with a center slit, though hers was down the front of her Proenza Schouler LBD.
