Nicole Richie: I Don’t Feel Competitive with Other Celebrity Designers

With a rocker husband and pop-legend father, it’s not surprising to hear that Nicole Richie finds design inspiration in music.

“I went on tour with my husband, [Good Charlotte's Joel Madden], and I really wanted to focus on rock ‘n’ roll,” she tells Footwear News of her fall shoe collection. “I did that mostly through the color palette and beading. There are also some subtle skulls. It was important for me to keep the collection delicate looking, but with a little bit of an edge.”

In the interview, Richie says she’s thinking of growing her House of Harlow 1960 line into home furnishings, and possibly even footwear for kids. But “we are not expanding right now,” she insists. “It’s important for me to focus on every [existing] collection and make it the best version of itself.”

The reality star-turned-designer says she doesn’t put her name on her Winter Kate clothing and House of Harlow 1960 accessories because “it’s not about me,” she explains. “I want the product to speak for itself and have a customer go after it or stay away from it based on the product, not the name. That’s very important to me.”

What do you get when you mix a socialite-cum-businesswoman, a collection of colorful work wear and Donald and Ivana Trump? Ivanka Trump’s first-ever fashion show, a celebration of her new namesake clothing collection, held at New York’s Lord & Taylor department store Wednesday night.

“It felt great,” she told PEOPLE after the show. “This is … one of these fun things that every child dreams about, so it’s a great honor for me.”

Though Trump didn’t grow up wanting to design — “I obviously love fashion, and I was exposed to it throughout my childhood,” she shared — in adulthood she saw a need for her ideas in the women’s wear world. “I felt there was a void for people like myself who are working, and want to dress in a way that’s feminine, that’s powerful, that’s elegant, and want to do so in a conscientious manner when it comes to budget,” she explained. “So that’s what we try to do with this collection.”

There’s another member of the Tilda Swinton fan club: one Victoria Beckham. “I’m quite obsessed with [her],” she tells Harper’s Bazaar U.K. “I find her intriguing, very stylish, she clearly understands fashion.”

Opening up about her clothing line and design process, Beckham — who recently cut her hair — reveals her designer crush, too: Miuccia Prada. “I’m absolutely blown away,” she shares. “Everything she does is genius. I’ve never met her, but everything she does — not just the hair, the makeup, the shows — everything about the brand impresses me.”

Victoria Beckham ‘Screamed’ When She Saw Beyoncé in Her Dress

Victoria Beckham has clothed mega-watt stars like Michelle Williams and Eva Longoria in recent months. But seeing Beyoncé step out in one of her creations last week really put her over the edge.

“I was very excited when I saw it online,” Beckham told Extra last Tuesday at the ASCAP Latin Music Awards in Beverly Hills. “I screamed, and said, ‘Look, David, look!’ She was one hot mama, for sure.”

Though Beckham admitted she still gets “so excited” when she sees stars in her dresses, that Beyoncé moment seemed to top them all. “It was big for me,” the designer said. “She’s incredible, and also an artist that I have so much respect for. I’m a huge, huge Beyoncé fan.”

Beckham, whose namesake clothing line is drawing more attention and critical acclaim as time goes on, said she’s proud of herself — and of her team. “I’m really, really overwhelmed with how well everything’s gone,” she shared. “And I just want to make women feel good about themselves. I want to empower women, make them feel happy and confident and as long as women are out there buying the dresses, I’m going to carry on doing what I feel really truly blessed to do. I’m the luckiest girl in the world, I really am.”

WATCH: Maria Sharapova Shares Her Design Inspirations — and Aspirations

“I love design,” says Maria Sharapova. “I think I got it from my mother.”

The tennis star — who’s collaborated with both Cole Haan and Nike for several years now — sits down with a group of female tennis-playing fans in Miami to talk sports fashion in the clip above. (Sharapova is in Miami for this week’s Sony Ericsson tournament.)

“It started from a young age,” the bride-to-be adds of her love of design. “When I started working with Nike I was 11 years old. The extra-small shirt was like a dress for me. So I was cutting the shirts to make them into regular shirts for me.”

Victoria Beckham Stressed About What to Wear to the Royal Wedding

Victoria Beckham‘s latest Vogue profile touches on some facts we already know: she initially struggled to gain acceptance in the fashion world, eventually defied the critics, took home a British Fashion Award this year — and often Skypes with her London-based team while wearing her PJs.

But there are some fun new factoids about the British superstar, too. For instance, despite her slim frame and gorgeous looks, she’s still self-conscious about her height. “I’ve never been a six-foot-tall, skinny model [she is five feet four], so therefore I want to create an illusion,” she explains. “People always think I’m taller than I am — not just because of the shoes I wear but because of the way I dress. It’s all relatively streamlined.”

She also loves shopping, but rarely visits stores. During a trip to Barneys with Vogue editor Hamish Bowles, she admits she makes most of her purchases through Net-a-Porter.com.
