You may or may not have noticed that it’s winter. Which means that it’s probably not the most ideal time to forgo pants altogether. But no one ever said Hollywood stars play by the style rules us commoners adhere to, as evidenced by (from left) Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Rihanna, who all decided to opt out of bottoms in the past two days. If you’re interested in giving this look a shot yourself, we thought a photo guide might be helpful, as well as some tips for where to wear it.

It’s no secret that Kiernan Shipka is our teen style idol. The Mad Men star knows how to work a red carpet better than some actresses twice her age. And she isn’t afraid to try new trends, but one of her recent looks has editors divided. The actress selected a Tory Burch floral embroidered tunic and matching flare-leg pants for the designer’s Rodeo Drive store opening in Beverly Hills, and we can’t decided if it’s on point or a bit to matchy-matchy. Now it’s time for you to weigh in. Vote in our poll below for a chance to be featured in the magazine!

Kim Kardashian's Unusual Wardrobe Choices Get Our Attention, Again

Feb/05/2014 at 11:37 AM ET

We long ago stopped trying to make sense of some of Kim Kardashian‘s wardrobe choices. After all, multiple outfit changes per day are a must for the reality star, and not all are going to be a home run. But we have to say, only Kim would wear stretchy black leggings and a crop top to a nice lunch and then later change into a formfitting pencil skirt to jump on a trampoline.

By now it’s very clear that the reality star loves herself a crop top (see: the whole #DiorDressICutInto2Pieces thing). But her latest midriff-baring moment trumps all the rest. Kardashian went out in L.A. — with sister Khloé Kardashian and mom Kris Jenner — flashing some belly button in a ’90s-inspired look: black turtleneck crop top, capri spandex leggings, an oversize topper and gem-embellished gold heels. Is she trying to bring back the pedal pusher pants trend? At the very least, she’s trying to bring them outside the gym. This also marks a return to all-black dressing for the star, who has been very open about preferring a light-colored wardrobe since giving birth to North. Read More

If you’ve seen Wolf of Wall Street you know Margot Robbie can act — and she looks amazing in lingerie. And if you’ve seen her on the red carpet, you know the actress has also proven she’s just as stylish fully clothed. (Did you see her Golden Globes gown?) But Robbie has made one fashion choice that divided editors here while attending a screening for her film in this tri-color Delpozo midi with crystal embellishments hanging from the bodice. So we’re leaving it up to you to decide: In or out? Vote on this dress below (and share additional thoughts in the comments) for a chance to be featured in an upcoming issue! Read More

Julia Roberts's Golden Globes Dress: We're Taking Sides

Jan/12/2014 at 09:08 PM ET

The stars gave us plenty to talk about on the red carpet at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, but there were a few that had us completely divided. And what fun would it be if we didn’t have some spirited debate about the fashion? Julia Roberts had us (and PEOPLE Red Carpet Instagram followers) buzzing the loudest when she stepped out of the limo in Dolce & Gabbana — so we decided to take sides.

PRO: Whitney Little, Associate Producer: My first thought upon seeing Julia step onto the red carpet: “Oh no.” Then I watched as she did her red carpet interviews, and she worked some sort of voodoo magic on me because now I am obsessed with this entire outfit. Hear me out, OK?

Jessica Alba demonstrated how to appropriately rock a white button-up shirt on the red carpet, but nobody ever expected to see it at one of the biggest awards shows of the year. Plus, the black dress perfectly hugged her curves, the sparkly belt added a touch of glam to the ensemble and I personally think the white button-up adds an element of surprise to what could have potentially been a snoozy choice.

Could anyone else have rocked this look? Probably not. But we’re not talking about just anyone — we’re talking about one of the classiest actresses of our time, and if she wants to wear a button-down on the red carpet then I’ll absolutely love it. Thanks for keeping us on our toes, Julia.

CON: Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I was in a sorority, so I am going to adhere to a strict “PRO-CON-PRO” policy here, in which I am going to sandwich my criticism in compliments to cushion the blow. So let’s start with something nice: Her whole head looks great — fabulous hair and pretty makeup. Nice job there.

As for the dress. It’s very “woman of a certain age,” which Roberts, 46, certainly is not. It makes her look like she needs to conceal her upper arms, which she most certainly does not either. And on a night when her movie is heavily nominated and she’s going to be the center of attention, I’m just not sure “matronly” and “charity ball” is the best look to aim for.

To end on a happy note, she’ll have lots of opportunities to redeem herself throughout awards season. C’mon, Julia, let’s see those guns at the SAGs!

No, John Mayer Will Not Be Pulling Santa's Sleigh This Year. That's Just His Coat.

Dec/18/2013 at 05:04 PM ET

John Mayer Reindeer coatRay Tamarra/Getty

Oh, deer.

John Mayer, whether in a misguided style moment or a fit of pique after hearing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” on the radio for the six millionth time, made an appearance in N.Y.C. wearing a coat that looks an awful lot like it once belonged to that once-bullied Santa employee.

It’s furry. It’s fuzzy. It has — oh boy, is that a tail? It’s got a hood that he wears when his ears get chilly and festive red trim. And it’s just really hard to understand.

RELATED: Vote on more questionable star style in Obsessed or Hot Mess?

Look, John, we know you love “Who You Love.” (Lord knows that song has made it abundantly clear.) But even if that motto applies to your feelings about this coat, we have some practical concerns; namely, that it may scare small children. Even our most die-hard Mayer fan in the office called this one “indefensible,” so why don’t you return it to the reindeer from whence it came. Otherwise he’s going to be very chilly on his route this Dec. 24.

So…any thoughts on this one? We’re still essentially speechless.
