Zoë Saldana's Surprising DIY Hair Secrets: Steal Them Now!

Zoë Saldana may have all the best hair stylists and makeup pros at her disposal (she is one of the gorgeous spokesmodels for L’Oréal Paris), but the star still turns to DIY beauty tricks to keep her strands healthy.

In the debut issue of Chica Magazine (which lives as insert in People En Español‘s 50 Most Beautiful issue out now!), the actress shares that her mom gave her a book of recipes for healthy hair and skin. “Everything was organic and stuff that we already had in the kitchen,” she tells Chica.

So what did she learn? Read a list of her favorite DIY beauty treatments below.

Avocado hair mask: “Overripe avocados are perfect. You mash them up with a little olive oil, and let the mixture sit on your hair for 30 minutes. It makes me hungry, so I usually end up rinsing it out too soon.”

White vinegar for shine: “Once a month I rinse my hair with white vinegar and warm water to restore the pH balance to my strands.”

Homemade Sun-In: “I did this as a girl when I was living in the Dominican Republic. You soak hair with rum, then go out in the sun.”

For red highlights: “Apply a mix of equal parts beet juice and lemon juice to your hair, then sit in the sun. You get stunning reddish highlights.”

Olive oil for the ends: “Put your hair in a ponytail and blot a bit of olive oil on the ends. Your hair just sucks in all that moisture.”

Met Gala Predictions: Six Looks We're Hoping to See (in Some Form!) on the Red Carpet

May/02/2014 at 10:30 AM ET

The Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala (or Met Gala, for short) is on Monday, and it promises to be one of the most formal evenings in ages. The dress code specifies white tie and tails for men (think what Prince Philip might wear to a royal wedding), while ladies will be wearing gowns influenced by the famously glamorous and over-the-top beautiful designs of Charles James. (Who? Read more about him here.) And of course, dozens of stars will be attending on the arms of designers who have created custom gowns just for the occasion.

Due to the extremely high-fashion nature of the ball, stars are likely to be wearing very formal, very elegant one-of-a-kind dresses to walk up the famous Met Gala stairs. But we couldn’t help but take a look at recent runways to see where inspiration may lie for these A-list designers and their planned celebrity dates. Below, see six outfits we think we might see in some form Monday night.

Zoë Saldana Is the New Face of L'Oréal Paris! 'I've Grown To Believe Every Woman on this Earth Can Rock a Red Lip' (Plus: Exclusive Video!)

With the news that Zoë Saldana is joining the ranks of women like Lea Michele and Blake Lively as a L’Oréal Paris spokesperson, we had to ask: What does this new title mean to you? “It puts the stamp on, like, ‘Congratulations, you’re finally a real woman!” Saldana tells PEOPLE, laughing.

The N.Y.-born beauty, who describes her beauty philosophy as “simple, clean and strong,” is known for her elegant signature makeup look, a cat eye and red lipstick — the latter of which she loves so much, she confessed to having three red lipsticks in her purse alone. And though she knows what works for her now, she recommends a lot of trial and error to get to that perfect shade for you.

“In the years I’ve been on this planet, I’ve grown to believe that every woman on this earth can rock a red lip,” she says. “It doesn’t matter how big or how thin their lips are, how dark their skin is, or yellow or light or pink, there’s so many shades of red, you can find the right shade. Women just look so beautiful and powerful when they’re wearing red lipstick.”

Oscars Gown Showdown: Reese Witherspoon vs. Zoë Saldana -- Pick Your Favorite!

Feb/13/2014 at 09:45 AM ET

Oscar Gown Showdown: Reese Witherspoon, Zoë SaldanaFernando Allende/Splash News Online; Kevin Mazur/W

The Showdown: Reese Witherspoon in 2007 vs. Zoë Saldana in 2010
The Editor’s Pick: Zoë Saldana
Who Made the Call?: Andrea Lavinthal, Style and Beauty Director
Why She Chose It:
Before I launch into all the reasons why I picked one of the most polarizing gowns to ever hit the red carpet, I need to confess that I changed my mind like seven times before I finally made peace with my decision. And by “made peace” I mean that I was about to miss my deadline so I was forced to choose one and move on.

What made it such a tough call is that I think Reese’s deep amethyst gown, designed by Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci, is the best thing she’s ever worn. The actress collaborated with Theyskens to create “something really fitted through the bust and hips,” the designer told PEOPLE back in 2007. The two worked out the details by phone (she was in Los Angeles and he was in Paris), with the help of sketches Theyskens sent to her. And here’s another fun fact: He had two mannequins with the actress’s petite proportions custom made. Two, because he actually made two dresses for Reese in case she changed her mind the day of the Oscars.

Check out the full Oscars Gown Showdown bracket here!

She (wisely) chose the bustier gown with a cascade of ruffles that faded in color from dark eggplant to pale lilac. Reese’s makeup artist Molly Stern told PEOPLE the decision was an easy one. “She said that it was the most beautiful dress she felt she’s ever worn.”

So what can trump 40 meters of purple silk jacquard from Switzerland constructed into a show-stopper just for Reese? Another purple ombré gown. Zoë Saldana’s Givenchy Couture (made by Riccardo Tisci) was straight off the runway and featured everything: sparkles, ruffles (upon ruffles) and a stunning color gradation. For some, the bold design catapulted Zoe to the top of the best dressed list. For others, it was a high-fashion disaster (many compared the ruffles to heads of cabbage). I loved that she took such a big risk at such a major event. She knew the dress would be polarizing, but she wore it anyway and because of her style cojones I’m giving her my vote.
