Four Lipstick Colors We’re Loving at Cannes

May/21/2013 at 09:00 AM ET

There might not be a lot of color on the clothes at Cannes, but the lipstick is a different story. Below, four colors that we think were real standouts on the red carpet at the film festival.

Zoë Saldana‘s rich, deep red was the perfect compliment to her steely topaz Valentino gown. The dewy finish kept the look youthful, which was key to making her whole look feel fresh.

Jessica Biel ordinarily loves a nude lip, but she broke out of her comfort zone to choose a deep rose that complemented the swath of pink in her Dior dress. Light eye makeup and a retro do really highlighted how much the girlie pink hue played up Biel’s famously full lips.

Kirsten Dunst also opted for a red lip for her big Cannes red carpet walk, though she opted for a much more ’50s-appropriate, Betty Draper-inspired look. Lined to perfection and elegantly matte, the bold color made her blue eyes pop.

And Marion Cotillard attended a daytime photocall with a soft, blush pink lip color that we’re dying to get our hands on. It looks fresh with her feminine bob — and an extra coat of gloss made the look nighttime-appropriate a little later.

If you’ve been following Cannes fashion as avidly as we have over the past week, you’ve likely noticed a few things. Namely, that everyone appears to be wearing black. Or white. Or (wait for it) black and white.

It’s a graphic, sleek and chic look that’s easy for any star to pull off — ease being a must during a week when it’s been pouring every day, so stars have more important things to worry about (like keeping their hair dry) than, say, coordinating a full outfit.

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Pretty Ponies, Wrist Candy and Peep-Toe Booties

In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we saw bracelets get swapped out for plain ol’ wristwatches, an abundance of lovely, slicked-back strands — and one instance of confused-weather footwear that we think can be retired right about now.

Up: Elegant ponytails. Perhaps blame it on the transitional weather, but plenty of stars this week opted to smooth their hair back into elegant, classic ponytails and not risk the frizz factor. Zoë Saldana had one of our favorites, but Julianne Hough, Olivia Munn, Miranda Kerr and Heidi Klum have all worn their hair tightly pulled back into a pretty, simple style.

Need proof that accessories make the outfit?

Then look no further than these three stars, who — in baubles ranging from $100 to $1 million — showed just how important picking the right jewelry can be.

Bella Thorne caught our eye at the Radio Disney Music Awards, wearing a whimsically pretty Kate Spade New York “Cameo Jewels” bib necklace, on sale for $99. It popped against her sweetheart-neckline dress but has major rewear potential.

Zoë Saldana: Super-Short Hair May Be In My Future

Zoë Saldana‘s close with her longtime hairdresser, Mara Roszak, but her confession in the latest issue of InStyle Hair may be enough to give Roszak nightmares.

“If I want to chop off my hair, I’ll take scissors and do one side before I even go to the hairdresser,” she says. “It’s all about trusting my instincts. Plus, that way I can’t change my mind!”

And what’s the likelihood that we’ll see the perpetually stylish star with Hollywood’s hottest hairstyle, the pixie, sometime soon? “At some point I might just want to chop it all off and go really short,” she says. “I’ll just wake up in the morning and, well … you know.”

Also on Saldana’s tress wish list: To return to her naturally curly texture. “It’s been eight months since my last straightening treatment, and I’m going to let it all grow out,” she tells the magazine (see her changing looks here). “It’s been a long time since I’ve woken up with my hair looking like an Afro. I can’t wait to have that again.”

Zoë Saldana: ‘We’re Prone to Tacky Every Now and Then’

Skin is not in for Zoë Saldana.

The actress, 34 — with positive reinforcement from her stylist, Petra Flannery — prefers to keep things covered on red carpets, though that wasn’t always the case.

“She taught me that you don’t necessarily need to wear less to look sexy,” Saldana told PEOPLE on Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo’s 25 Most Powerful Stylists luncheon in West Hollywood, where she celebrated Flannery’s No. 2 ranking, as well as their magazine cover together.

“You go through those phases where sometimes you feel super sexy and you want to wear something tight and short. We’re prone to tacky every now and then,” she said. “[Petra] always makes me see it on another end, and you end up feeling so much sexier. We always choose class over anything else.”

But it doesn’t matter what the style is that Saldana wears — she just wants it to be her own.
