Zoë Saldana Is ‘Not a Pink Girl’

Zoë Saldana looked beautiful at the Cosmopolitan for Latinas launch party in New York last week, but it took some convincing to get the actress into that blush-hued Elie Saab dress.

“This took years for [stylist Petra Flannery] to get me to wear — feminine, pretty colors and pastel,” the actress told FabSugar. “I always want things to be hard and poignant but sometimes, you need these things because they mellow you out.”

The Avatar beauty relies heavily on Flannery — not just her stylist but also a close friend — to help put together her red carpet ensembles. “She is my must-have,” she said. “I work so hard and I am nonstop that sometimes taking time to think about what I am going to wear is overwhelming.”

Saldana, also said she’s “not a pink girl,” is known for her fashion risks, too, so it’s not surprising that she describes her style as “unexpected” and “emotional.”

Zoë Saldana: Latinas Are ‘Fearless’ With Fashion

Zoë Saldana tells Cosmopolitan for Latinas that she’s wearing a lot of black these days, but the actress seriously brightens the pages of the inaugural issue in looks from Black Halo, Dior, Blugirl and more.

“Latinas are fearless when it comes to fashion,” she says. “They aren’t afraid to wear color. It can be the grayest, most wintery day and you’ll see a Puerto Rican mama in a yellow Tweety Bird Dress.”

Though Saldana’s style might not be quite so loud — she favors runway-ready looks from designers like Givenchy, Alexander McQueen and Prabal Gurung — her routines did have humble beginnings.

Growing up in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic — her mom moved the family there from New York after Saldana’s father died in a car accident — the actress recalls getting into trouble with her sisters. “[My mom] loved us so much that sometimes it was difficult for her to watch her kids do crazy stuff like lock yourself in the bathroom and shave your eyebrows off, just to paint them back on again,” she recalls.

Why Finding a Stylist Was Like Finding a Boyfriend for Zoë Saldana

For Zoë Saldana, finding the perfect stylist was like falling in love: it took a lot of searching to find ‘the one.’

“I think it took me years,” the actress told PEOPLE of finally finding longtime stylist Petra Flannery. “I would meet with [different stylists] and work with some of them, and I just never really understood until I found the synchronicity that I was looking for … As soon as Petra and I met, we had such an amazing chemistry.”

Saldana depends on Flannery to keep her on top of best-dressed lists — while making sure her fashion choices honor her personal sense of style, too.

“[Stylists] are such an important element to the composition of an artist’s image,” Saldana said recently during a luncheon hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo celebrating the magazine’s list of the 25 most powerful celebrity stylists (Flannery was among them).

“You can’t really walk out your door sometimes if you don’t have somebody that tells you [what looks good],” Saldana continued. “When you have somebody that worries about that or makes sure that they’re representing you, making you look good, you can only focus on what you really love to do, which is just to be an artist.”

Zoë Saldana: ‘I Don’t Let Fashion Worry Me’

Thanks to her killer body and eye for style, Zoë Saldana has had nary a red carpet miss. But the actress attributes many of her big hits to her stylist.

“She’s one of my closest friends and we … have so much fun with fashion,” Saldana told reporters Saturday at the Independent Spirit Awards, where she stunned in a colorful mini. “I don’t let it worry me.”

Saldana said that when she’s not busy filming, she’s often studying style. “I love the craftsmanship of it … I love the composition, what designers go through to build a collection, to build a line, to build a label, a brand.” (Case in point: she recently came to New York Fashion Week expressly to catch the Prabal Gurung show.)

So with all of this fashion knowledge, what is Saldana’s big wardrobe must for the months ahead? “Color,” she said. “I’m a New Yorker. I’m always dressed like I’m mourning something, in black and white. But I’m introducing color this year.”

Zoe Saldana Daydreams About Fashion … and Her Wedding Day

Though Zoe Saldana is engaged to her dream guy, longtime beau Keith Britton, she has another love, too: fashion. The Colombiana star — who hit the red carpet in Barbara Bui at the Motorola Mobility bash in New York on Tuesday — is a fan “of so many designers,” she told PEOPLE at the event.

“From the older iconic ones like Lanvin, Givenchy … I’ve got Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Diane von Furstenberg and Calvin Klein,” she said of her favorites, adding, “I wore an amazing Louis Vuitton dress to the Golden Globes.” Prabal Gurung, Derek Lam and Jason Wu make her list, too.

Though she has her favorites, Saldana — who’s hosting Gen Art’s “Fresh Faces in Fashion” runway show in Los Angeles on Oct. 22 — doesn’t focus too much on labels when choosing gowns. “I look to find myself in them and not to get lost in them,” she said. “So if I see an outfit from a designer that I really feel will complement my personality and I know that I would wear it well, I will definitely fight for it.”

Zoe Saldana’s Favorite Part of a Girls’ Night? The Girls!

She plays one tough chick in her new film, Colombiana, but Zoe Saldana tells PEOPLE she’s always up for ladies’ night.

“My beauty tip for a girls’ night out is … the girls,” she tells PEOPLE in the clip above. “We’re all putting each other together while listening to a good playlist.”

Depending on where she goes at night, Saldana says she keeps it casual or goes “very va-va. If you want to go for a glass of champagne somewhere you put on the heels and you do your hair,” she says.

Hollywood’s hottest new dress has major stars in stripes! Since Aug. 2, six sexy celebs have stepped out in Express’s three-quarter sleeved striped dress (Emily Blunt sported the black-and-white version for a night out on the town) — a steal at only $50.

Each star’s own spin on the dress showed off its versatility. From left, Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum added casual accessories to walk about town; Zoë Saldana belted hers and added posh camel accessories to run errands; January Jones continued her maternity chic streak by adding embellished sandals and a slate bag; and Olivia Munn hit the red carpet in knee-high boots and gold necklaces.

You can share the stars’ style by nabbing the dress yourself — it’s still available at Express.com — but first tell us: Who wore her striped Express dress best?
