Whitney Port Shows You How to Pull Off a 'Cali Casual' Look (Plus, Get the Hair to Match)

Apr/16/2014 at 09:00 AM ET

Maybe it’s all that Coachella style, but we have California style on the brain right now. So it’s perfect that Whitney Port is giving some fashion inspiration for a “Cali Casual” outfit.

In her latest Drab To Fab video with Joico, Port shares her dressing tips with viewers for a laid-back look that is perfect for this time of year.

“It’s dressed up in a really dressed down kind of way,” Port says of the perforated chambray collared top and matching snakeskin lounge pant (both from her Whitney Eve line), which she teams with an on-trend cuff. As for the glossy undone curls, you’ll have to watch the clip above to find out hairstylist Damien Carney’s secrets. (Hint: It involves a great dry shampoo you might want to add to your beauty arsenal.)

Port is no strange to the loose beachy wave, and she’s totally an air-dry type of girl. “I kind of wash it and let it air dry and let it down, with a slight side part,” Port told PEOPLE of her go-to hairstyle. “For more of a red carpet look it always varies on what I’m wearing, but recently I’ve been liking a sleek long straight pony and the wet look. Very simple.”

Headed to an Oscars Party? Whitney Port Will Get You Glam In No Time

Feb/21/2014 at 09:30 AM ET

Whitney Port has had plenty of experience translating her low-key Cali vibe into a full, glammed up red carpet look, which is why she’s perfect to introduce the second part of her “Drab to Fab” series with Joico. After giving a model an N.Y.C. look from top-to-toe in the first installment, Port and Joico artistic director Damien Carney make over another lucky model into an easygoing glamour girl.

“The Hollywood glam is one of my favorites, because I feel like everyone wants to look like that, but they’re not really sure how to do it,” Port says in the video. “It’s really important to know you can wear something simple and black, something you have in your wardrobe, but accessorize with a little bit more of glitz and glam.” She tops a faux leather peplum top with emerald earrings and a dressy shoe, though notes that it’s just as easy to do this look with jeans as it is the skirt she chose.

Whitney Port has all things bridal on the brain! The newly engaged designer is having a great time planning her upcoming nuptials to fiancé Tim Rosenman, and she’s spilling some secrets about her big day.

“It’s going to be destination,” Port told PEOPLE at a Wedding Paper Divas bridal luncheon Tuesday in her honor. “Since I’m from here and Tim is from New York, we thought it would make sense for everyone to just be on neutral ground.”

And while she seems to have plans in motion, including a tentative date, Port hasn’t spent her whole life obsessing about her “big day.” (She has a secret Pinterest board now for inspiration, but that’s about it.) “I wasn’t that girl. I knew I wanted to have a fun party but it wasn’t something I knew the day I got engaged, ‘This is exactly what I want,’ at all.”

One of the many things we love about the holidays: engagement season kicks off in full force. Starting things off right is Whitney Port whose sparkler on that finger may be only hours old — but she’s already got dresses on the brain.

“I think it obviously depends what the theme of the wedding is,” Port told PEOPLE (on the set of her new web series Drab To Fab) of hunting for her gown. “What comes to mind is something simple. I’ve always envisioned that Cindy Crawford beach slip kind of dress, but who knows. I feel like you never know until you actually plan it.”

One thing she does know: “I won’t be wearing a cupcake wedding dress. I won’t be wearing one of those princess, fairytale kind of dresses. That’s a no.”

And with her fashion background (she has her own line Whitney Eve), Port definitely plans to design her own dress. “I know what cut works for me,” she shared. “It’s something so personal. That will be a really fun process for me.”

Talk about a split personality! Whitney Port made an appearance at a store in Sydney, Australia, last week, sporting a top knot, black blazer, red blouse, gold necklace … and pants with mismatched legs.

The designer seems to be in a bit of a mixing phase lately; she’s paired contrasting prints, dissimilar trends and varied textures — and that’s all been this summer. Perhaps it’s a preview of what’s to come in her crowd-sourced runway show next week?

Regardless of why she’s wearing this out-there look, we want to know what you think about it! So vote in our poll below, and leave your thoughts in the comments; your feedback could end up in the November issue of PEOPLE StyleWatch.
