Met Gala 2014: The Stars Who Played it Safe (Bordering on Snoozy)

A Charles James-themed Met Gala was supposed to mean sweeping ballgowns, architectural bodices, glamorous embellishments and elegant, feminine draping. What it doesn’t typically indicate is simple day dresses and minimalist lines. So we have to give these stars a grade of Z (as in Zzzzz) for punting on what could have been an opportunity for something super gorgeous.

From left, we’ve got Elizabeth Olsen in an ice skater-inspired Miu Miu design with illusion tulle along the neckline, fingerless wristlets, a puckering jeweled bodice and contrasting yellow-and-red sandals. Cute for a daytime photocall, but not terrible inspiring for a glamorous event like this one. Next up is Rachel McAdams in a perfectly pretty blush strapless dress and loose locks that are just fine, but not really in keeping with the over-the-top loveliness that James inspired.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a Balmain dress (a similar style of which was recently seen on Kim Kardashian). Said the supermodel of the swingy mini, “I love leopard, I love black, I love painted and I love gold so … ” (we suppose that explains why she didn’t go with the theme?). And finally, the face of Louis Vuitton, Michelle Williams, wore a design by the line that would look equally as adorable picking her daughter up from school, plus minimal hair, makeup and accessories. Cute dress, but wrong occasion in our estimation.

Do you think these ladies should have stepped it up or are these dresses perfect?

Surprising Star Trend: Head-to-Toe Purple

Apr/11/2013 at 10:30 AM ET

Monochromatic outfits are in for spring. For most of us, that means we might try an all-white look — or if we’re feeling really daring — shades of beige.

Further proof that stars aren’t like most of us: head-to-toe bright, bold purple hues are all the rage in Hollywood right now.

And these three stars are showing off very different ways to try the trend. Katy Perry (left) sported a striped violet hoodie and coordinating skinny pants for an airport jaunt. Ellen Pompeo went for a polished, crisp look in an orchid-colored pantsuit. And Rachel McAdams really made a saturated statement on Jimmy Kimmel Live in her royal purple outfit, which offset her new hair.

It’s certainly a statement, but is it one you want to make? And who is doing the trend best? Tell us in the comments below.

Why Did Rachel McAdams Dye Her Hair Red? 'It Was the Only Color Left!'

Apr/10/2013 at 03:28 PM ET

She’s been blonde, brunette and even pink — so what inspired Rachel McAdams to take the plunge and become a redhead?

“This was the only color left!” she told PEOPLE, laughing, at the L.A. premiere of To The Wonder.

But seriously: “My mother is a redhead, so I thought maybe I could pull it off,” she shared. “If she could do it, maybe I could do it. I don’t know, I just thought that it would be fun.”

And McAdams is already making the most of her sexy new hue, piling it into a high, shiny topknot for Tuesday’s premiere. Dove stylist Mark Townsend created the “young, cool and super modern” look for the star by spraying her hair with Dove’s Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo for texture and working in a dime-size amount of the line’s Color Care Leave on Conditioner for shine.

He then pulled her hair into a ponytail, sprayed it with Sally Hershberger Genius Spray Wax and twisted the tail into a knot, tucking the ends under and securing with two bobby pins that had been sprayed with dry shampoo. A black satin ribbon finished the look.

Tell us: Are you loving the new look on McAdams? Would you try her topknot?

Megan Fox Dyes Her Hair Red; Which Star's New Red Do Is Best?

Now that one of the most famous brunettes in Hollywood has gone red, we can officially declare bright red hair a phenomenon.

Megan Fox, who is playing famously redheaded reporter April in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake, debuted her new hue at the L.A. airport Monday night. And we couldn’t help but notice that this particular bright shade of red seemed very similar to the other buzzworthy hair makeovers we’ve been seeing lately.

Since Modern Family‘s Ariel Winter showed off her Little Mermaid-inspired hair in March, it’s seemed like every week has brought a new ginger hue for a different star. Dianna Agron went for a more orange-y shade, while Rachel McAdams debuted a deep auburn color (and had us speculating about whether it was a “breakover”).

And now with Fox’s latest shade, we have to put it up to a vote. Whose new red hair is best?

Rachel McAdams Dyes Her Hair Red

There’s officially something in the Hollywood water.

Rachel McAdams is the latest star (after Dianna Agron and Ariel Winter) to be spotted with an electric shade of red hair.

PHOTOS: Vote on more star hair color changes and cuts here!

McAdams has actually had the hue since shortly after parting ways with love Michael Sheen in February. So while the other two were just feeling experimental, McAdams may be sporting one of the key signs of a breakover: a bold new look.

Then again, McAdams is no stranger to hair color shakeups: she’s been platinum blonde, chocolate brown and everything in between (even pink!) throughout her career. One thing’s for sure, regardless of the reason: The star seems to be having a lot of fun as a redhead, so we don’t imagine she’ll go back to blonde anytime soon.

Tell us: What do you think of McAdams’s new hue?

Do You Like Rachel McAdams's New Bangs?

It’s officially a trend! Rachel McAdams is the latest star to add bangs to her hairstyle, debuting the look at the Los Angeles premiere of The Vow (sponsored by Ralph Lauren Romance) Monday night. The star stepped out in a sky-blue Vivienne Westwood dress and glimmering jewels, complementing her look with smoky eyes, red lips and her new blonde bangs.

McAdams joins a growing list of leading ladies who’ve added bangs to their hair recently, including Jessica Biel, Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz (sometimes), Olivia Wilde, Kim Kardashian (who tried clip-ons) and Reese Witherspoon, who cut them to cover a forehead scar. Kelly Clarkson rocked them during the Super Bowl, and Sarah Michelle Gellar added a few face-framing bangs recently, as well.

We think McAdams always looks lovely, but want to hear your thoughts.
