ShoeMint, launching with a winter/holiday collection, is a collaboration between Bilson, stylist Nicole Chavez and shoemaker Steve Madden — three tastemakers who seem perfectly in sync.

“I think we do share a brain when it comes to fashion,” Chavez, who met Bilson on The O.C., says to her co-designer. Madden is an admirer, too. “We were mad crazy fans of The O.C., so when we got the opportunity to work with Rachel, we were excited,” he says.

SHOP STARS’ HOTTEST FALL SHOES

The clothes on Hart of Dixie are pretty cute — and made cuter by the stars that wear them, namely Rachel Bilson and Jaime King. And since both ladies are so fashion forward, it’s not surprising to hear that much of their off-screen chatter has to do with style.

“We’re really close, so we’re always sharing [fashion] tips,” King told FabSugar of her relationship with Bilson at the MoCA gala in Los Angeles over the weekend. The actresses probably have a lot to say: King regularly calls on designer Jason Wu for fashion advice, while Bilson is a guest editor on Piperlime.com and is designing for the soon-to-launch ShoeMint.com.

On the show, set in Alabama, Bilson plays New York transplant Zoe Hart and wears looks by designers like Marc Jacobs, Isabel Marant, Diane von Furstenberg and Jil Sander. King’s character, southern belle Lemon Breeland, is decidedly more conservative, but the actress seems cool with that laid-back sense of style — in fact, she even helps shape it. “We definitely collaborate a lot,” she told FabSugar of her work with the wardrobe department. Style maven Rachel Bilson seems to have a solution for every fashion fiasco. She recently made it a lot easier to walk a mile in her shoes with her collaboration with ShoeMint.com, and shares style picks regularly as a Piperlime.com guest editor.

So when she stopped by the Rachael Ray Show earlier this week, naturally, the Hart of Dixie star was happy to share her fashion expertise:

How to find the best boot for your size:

“The mid-calf is definitely a safe go-to,” she told Ray. “The riding boot is definitely a great everyday thing and it looks good on anyone. You can tuck your jeans into it. It’s really easy. But same with … mid-calf; I think it works. So anywhere between the ankle and mid-calf would be good for the more petite.”

How to wear square scarves:

“I think the square scarf is definitely a little trickier because of the shape and the silk and everything,” she shared. “I do like it as a purse accessory.” But it’s easy to wear, too. “If it’s in a triangle, not a square … if you wrap it around and you kind of tie it … at an angle, I think that’s kind of cool. I like it a little more funky. You can wear it square on, too, if you want to be more conservative, but I kind of like the little funk to it when it’s a little off.”

How to incorporate tabletop pieces in the rest of the home:

“I always love a pitcher as a vase, and I think if you have flowers it’s a great way to use it,” said Bilson, who has her own whimsical homeware line. “I use that usually more for flowers than serving drinks.” And other serviing pieces work well as home décor, too. “If you have a tiered dish, you can use it for jewelry,” she suggested. “I think that’s really cute if you display your rings, your bracelets or whatever and you can see it, it’s out in the open. I think it’s kind of a nice thing.”

STARS SHOW OFF THEIR SHOES!

What’s Rachel Bilson‘s secret to landing atop so many best-dressed lists? Taking funky finds and giving them her own twist.

“I don’t like things that look too pulled together,” she tells Women’s Health magazine. “I like the casual touch on a dressy outfit. A vintage dress with designer shoes is always a safe bet. Or a vintage blouse with a pair of jean shorts.”

The avid eBay shopper, who also has a home line, constantly updates her collection by visiting antique shops and vintage stores every time she finds herself in a new city. But sometimes modifying her outfits comes with a bit of a risk. “I cut a vintage dress recently, and it was not a good result,” she says. “I cut it way too short. We had a funeral — there were tears.”

And though the stylish star has a passion for all things fashion, there are certain accessories that really make her drool: shoes. “I’m obsessed,” she says of her fetish for footwear, which involves designs by Charlotte Olympia. “I love her colors and textures. I have these emerald-green ones and a cool yellow raffia pair by her. Bell has an aesthetic all her own, too, one she says she developed long ago. “My love of fashion started when I was a child,” she explains. “I think it started with Halloween costumes and just dressing up and make-believe.” Playing off of that, she selects items like the “Bleecker” blazer by Tinley Road ($69), Levi’s cropped boyfriend skinny jeans ($78), a Juicy Couture gemstone cocktail ring ($78) and the Ash “Extreme” ankle boot ($295).

SHOP BACK-TO-SCHOOL STAR STYLE

She’s an avid eBay shopper and enjoys the occasional ice cream bar, but there’s one more crucial piece of info you may not know about actress Rachel Bilson: she’s a self-confessed outfit planner.

“I know this sounds terribly shallow, but I’ve been mapping out my outfits every day since I was little, even before high school,” she tells InStyle Makeover. “I have a very busy mind — there’s a constant chitter-chatter up there — but what I’m wearing the next day? That’s definitely something that’s always been in my head before I go to sleep at night.”

And it’s no surprise she started her fashion obsession at an early age, given her stylish influences. “My aunt Julie introduced me to Barneys and designers at a very young age,” she says. “And my mom was a huge vintage freak. Even when I was 2 years old, I insisted on dressing myself. I still have this tattered blue and purple carnival dress that my aunt brought back from Spain for me that I wore every day when I was a kid!”

But despite her ability to rock couture with ease, Bilson still has one non-negotiable fashion priority. “I’m on an endless journey to be as comfortable as possible,” she says of how she decides what to wear. “I like to stay in my pajamas as long as I can.” Read more on Bilson in the fall issue of InStyle Makeover, on newsstands Friday.

CAN YOU GUESS THE STAR BARGAIN?

She may have her own vintage-inspired home line, but that doesn’t mean Rachel Bilson has stopped shopping for darling décor. At the launch of the Derek Lam for eBay collection in New York Tuesday night, Bilson told PEOPLE that she’s always on the hunt for vintage treasures — and uses the online auction site as a tool. “I am an eBay shopper,” she admitted. “But I have no patience, and if you’re waiting for a bid, it’s so nerve-racking, but I think you can find amazing things.” The actress said she’s found a lot of decorative pieces on the site, including light fixtures and a weather vane. “When I say I found it, I actually lost out on it at the last second,” she explained. “But it was one of the better finds.” Bilson, decked out in the Derek Lam for eBay “Boho” halter dress, praised the designer’s mini collection, available on eBay now for $175-$295. “I think it’s so cool that he did a collaboration [with eBay] with clothes,” she said. “It’s such a great idea.” Lam, for his part, said he was thinking of summer when he created the wares. “Women always tell me they love my dresses,” he told PEOPLE. “And I love designing dresses! Everybody needs a great dress in the summer, so that was the inspiration.” Lam, who also admitted to shopping on eBay for “the best deals,” said his greatest online get was a pair of out-of-production Nike sneakers. “Someone said to just put in the registration number and you’ll find it, and I did,” he recalled. “[It was] the last pair I was able to find anywhere in my size.” Tell us: What’s your greatest eBay find? –Reporting by Asher Fogle

It was a wintery—albeit stylish—day at the Burberry Prorsum show during London Fashion Week, with stars including Rachel Bilson and Kate Bosworth popping in for the inclement-weather-themed runway show. “Everybody is asking me if it hurts to sit down with the studs, but it doesn’t at all, it’s just very heavy,” Kate Bosworth told WWD, referring to the Burberry pencil skirt virtually covered with spikes and studs she wore to the show. After a flurry of fashion models stormed down the runway in fur-trimmed coats and belted trenches, the show ended with a blizzard of fake snow covering the catwalk, while models paraded around wearing matching see-through plastic capes over their outfits. And for those who didn’t score a front-row seat like Bosworth and Bilson, many Brits still took in all the action; the show was screened live to the public in Piccadilly Circus in London (and on the web for those of us not in the U.K.). –Kim Peiffer

Kate Bosworth, Krysten Ritter and Rachel Bilson (below) do just fine in the fashion department but for their upcoming film, BFF & Baby, they let wardrobe designer Ilaria Urbinati take creative control. “Rachel’s character is a lot more insouciantly sexy than the other girls. Her style is very off-the-bus from Omaha,” Ilaria told PEOPLE of dressing Bilson’s petite frame in gingham, denim and cotton in the film–think Daisy Duke meets Brigitte Bardot. But the down-home look didn’t go without a high-end touch. “Rachel is wearing a lot of vintage, denim lines like Current/Elliott, accessories from Bare Collection and Christian Louboutin wedges,” Ilaria said. And unlike Rachel, who Ilaria has known for years and says is “game for whatever,” the stylist had never met Kate before. Bosworth, whose BFF & Baby look is crisp, clean and angular, has a character who “is pretty much 99 percent Calvin Klein collection and Jimmy Choo accessories,” she said.
