Rachel Bilson’s Dermatologist Offers Tips for Healthy Summer Skin

Everyone feels better with a summer glow, but unfortunately the sun wreaks havoc on our skin — unless we protect it.

Rachel Bilson and Vera Farmiga’s dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman — author of the new book Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist — obviously knows this, so to get us all summer-ready, she’s sharing her top tips on keeping skin summery — but healthy — all season long. Here are some rules to study up on before you hit the beach in the weeks ahead:

1. Everyone should wear sunscreen. Just because you’re blessed with olive skin that doesn’t burn doesn’t mean you should wear a low SPF. “The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 for all skin colors,” Jaliman tells PEOPLE, adding that “it’s also important to look for sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays.”

Heel Yes! Go Behind the Scenes on Rachel Bilson’s Latest ShoeMint Shoot

What’s better than a day at the Chateau Marmont with Rachel Bilson? That same day — involving hot shoes. That’s the idea behind the starlet’s latest ShoeMint campaign, shot recently with her collaborator Nicole Chavez by photographer Yu Tsai.

In the clip above, the ladies show off ShoeMint.com‘s offerings for May, June and July as Tsai snaps away. “We just love that really feminine, girly but still sophisticated [look],” Chavez explains. “And I think our collection is a lot like that.”

Rachel Bilson Explains How to Find the Perfect Sunglasses for Your Face

There’s one trend the ever-stylish Rachel Bilson is totally over. “Sunglasses at night,” she tells PEOPLE flatly. “C’mon, really?”

The actress, a spokeswoman for Sunglass Hut, is a huge fan of shades in general (she won’t even tell us how many pairs she owns), but has a few particular styles she gravitates toward. “I love the Ray-Ban Wayfarer,” she shares, including Chanel and Vogue on her list of faves. “They are a perfect hybrid of being cool, but also a classic.”

Bilson suggests that every woman keep two pairs of sunglasses on hand — “One for when you are feeling ultra-glamorous and one for your everyday, cool and casual look,” she shares — and “think opposites” when shopping for frames. “If you have a square face, you’ll need rounded frames,” she explains. “Choosing the right shape is all about balancing your proportions.”

Perusing Rachel Bilson‘s guest editor page on Piperlime.com, you’ll find fun shoes, colorful swimwear, functional handbags … and lots of blazers.

“Adding a statement blazer to an otherwise basic outfit gives it the perfect pop,” the Hart of Dixie star says in a release.

Three of her favorites include the Greylin “Bond” blazer (left, $108), the Ark & Co. “Color Block” blazer (center, $79) and the Elizabeth & James “Harlow” jacket (right, $385). “A bold blazer paired with neutrals is casual, chic and effortless,” Bilson explains of that bold choice.

Rachel Bilson has been a style icon for nearly a decade, but her staples for spring are surprisingly attainable.

Counting the Mint enterprises among her favorite e-tailers (Style, Jewel and her own endeavor, ShoeMint), The Hart of Dixie star has a soft spot for bargain basics. ”Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker is my favorite lip color,” she exclaims in her guest editor profile on WhoWhatWear. “I’ve worn it since high school.”

Other affordable finds include Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s cozy tees (bottom right). “The fit is so perfect and they make all the right colors,” Bilson says of the $29.99 knits. “Zara has great prints and comfy fabrics,” she adds, indicating an adorable pair of pants from the chain (top left).
