The Inspiration Behind Penelope Cruz’s Glowy Golden Globes Look? Uma Thurman!

BEImages

Following a tropical vacation, Pené lope Cruz went for a golden faux-tan on the red carpet at last weekend’s Golden Globes, according to her hairstylist Oribe and makeup artist Scott Barnes. At the launch of his new book About Face this week in N.Y.C, Barnes explained Cruz’s inspiration for her look: “She had just come back from her vacation. And she said, ‘I want to be tan. I want this eye.’ She found it in my book, it was Irina, the sexy Russian model who does the Guess! Jeans ads.” Barnes, who held court with another of his favorite clients, Jennifer Lopez, that evening, also revealed that Cruz, “had remembered an Elle cover I did with Uma Thurman. Uma was really tan and she wanted to look really tan, because she had just come back from vacation.” Makeup artist Oribe weighed in on Cruz’s flowing locks: “I just tried to wave her hair. She wanted to wear it down for the Armani dress. It was just movie star glamour. Wavy, but not too wavy. Just stylized nicely.” And where exactly was Cruz’s vacation-tousled look recreated? “We did it at her home. Real casual and easy and we got her ready probably in an hour and a half, nails and everything done,” says Oribe. “She’s amazing, just a regular girl,” added the hair guru. “Scott brought his book, showed her what he wanted to do. She loved it. It just went very smoothly. Beautiful eye, natural skin, it was a different makeup for her… really special. It made her look really fresh.” –Jeffrey Slonim

Dolce & Gabbana on Their Nine Role: ‘A Dream Come True’

Nine’s A-list leading ladies might be decked out in Chopard jewels throughout the movie, but Dolce & Gabbana’s designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, have scored actual roles in the much-anticipated flick! The pair play Italian priests alongside Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, Fergie and Marion Cotillard. And though they’re used to rubbing shoulders with Hollywood royalty, working alongside them on this film was definitely a special treat: “We wanted so much to be part of this project! Federico Fellini has always been one of our greatest sources of inspiration, one of the most important Italian directors,” the duo tells PEOPLE through a spokesperson. “For us, being part of a movie inspired by the work of the maestro is like a dream come true. Rob Marshall did an amazing work and the cast is amazing! He was able to put together the most beautiful and talented actresses of various generations and great actors. We couldn’t be more happy to be chosen, even if for a short appearance.” Nine opens on December 25 nationwide. Tell us: Are you excited to see Nine?

Francisco Costa on Dressing Penélope Cruz: “She’s an Angel”

In her new film Broken Embraces, Penélope Cruz dresses the part of a mogul’s wife and budding movie star, but at the Calvin Klein Collection-sponsored Cinema Society premiere at the Crosby Street Hotel last night, she looked simply angelic in a long white velvet coat and matching dress from Calvin Klein Collection with glittering Chopard diamonds. “She’s an angel,” said Francisco Costa, who is the Women’s Creative Director, Calvin Klein Collection. “She’s a total clothes horse. She looks amazing in everything.” Costa was also struck at how well the camera reacts to Penélope, even in her off time. “It was quite telling today. I wasn’t in the last fitting, and I got pictures of her in the clothes at the hotel room. And they looked like movie stills. She was just wearing the clothes in the hotel room, but it almost felt like Helmut Newton pictures, there was so much of her in the photos.” Even for a star as graceful as Penélope, it is still demanding to promote two movies at once — her musical Nine is coming out in December, as well. “Well, yes, I’m dressing for two tours at once over these two weeks, so it’s great that I have a team of people that help me.” Luckily after months of rigorous training for her dance numbers in Nine, she looks as fabulous in her red carpet clothes as she does in her revealing costumes. “For Nine, I had to rehearse a number for three months,” said Cruz. “That was the only way to do that, I had singing teachers and dancing teachers. I did dancing when I was growing up. I did classical ballet, but what I do in Nine is a VERY different type of dance. It was really like starting from zero, in a way.”–Jeffrey Slonim

Annie Leibovitz /Vogue

Talk about an all-star cast! Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Fergie and Marion Cotillard team up with screen legends Sophia Loren and Judi Dench to star in the musical Nine along with leading man Daniel Day-Lewis. And though the much-anticipated musical won’t hit the big screen until November 25, Vogue has already caught a glimpse of the killer costumes created by Oscar-award winner Colleen Atwood, who designed couture-like fashions that date back to the ’20s. And while the extras were decked in vintage, the superstar leading ladies had custom-made costumes to make it easier to sing and dance — 350 costumes and 200 pairs of shoes between them! Expect frilly garter belts, satin-and-lace bras, bustiers, hot pants, flapper dresses and fluffy ostrich-feather fans everywhere. The leading ladies tell Vogue how thrilled they are to be part of the movie, with Hudson gushing, “I spent most of my childhood singing and dancing and just never had the chance to do it professionally. So when I got the chance to work with Rob, I was so excited, I was out of my mind.” Marion confesses to a childhood longing to do musicals as well, “It’s been my dream to do an American musical. When I was a child, Annie was my favorite. I just never thought I would get to do it.” Read more from Vogue’s behind-the-scenes peek only at Style.com, including interviews with the A-list cast, and then be sure to pick up a copy of the November issue, on newsstands October 13.
