Nicole Richie: Men Are Drawn to Simplicity...And a Short Skirt

Jun/13/2013 at 02:45 PM ET

We admire Nicole Richie’sability to wear everything from a jumpsuit and a bralette to spray-painted silver hair and a beaded gown, but there’s one person who prefers when she keeps it simple: her husband.

“I have found that men don’t like too many bells and whistles,” the star tells PEOPLE, noting what husband Joel Madden does or doesn’t like about her style. “They’re not into hats or red lipstick. They’re more drawn to simplicity … and a short skirt. Shocker.”

It’s that sense of humor, which she delightfully displays on her AOL series #CandidlyNicole, and her fun-loving approach to style that makes us want to abide by Richie’s fashion philosophy.

“Take risks because that’s what makes it fun,” she shares. “Fashion is the ultimate form of self-expression. [Using] different fabrics and constructions, it’s all part of this game of dress up that we, on some level, are all playing.”

Experimentation with clothes started at a young age for Richie, thanks in part to her dad, Lionel, who took her to the Grammys for what she says is her most memorable red carpet moment. “I was 4 years old [a year younger than her daughter Harlow is now] and my father’s costume designer made me a dress out of the excess fabric of one of his stage costumes,” Richie explains. “It’s safe to say I stole the show that year.”

Nicole Richie's Most Cringeworthy Beauty Moment Involves Her Eyebrows

When you see a photo of Nicole Richie killing it from every angle, it’s easy to forget that she too once made some serious style blunders.

Don’t believe us? The star shared her most memorable mishap with Teen Vogue at last night’s CFDA Awards.

“The second I started getting hair in the middle of my eyebrows, I decided to shave it off,” she shares. “But by shaving it off, I actually went to the middle of my eyebrow, so I had no eyebrows. I only had the ends of my eyebrow. That was nice. That was fun.”

And even worse, she couldn’t make do with a little makeup. “I didn’t pencil it in because I wasn’t old enough. I was only 13. So my mom didn’t take any pictures of me,” she went on. “That was really comforting. It was a really nice experience.”

The star is one of many who talked to Teen Vogue about their high school fashion (or lack thereof) and adolescent missteps. Richie herself says “I don’t think I had a strong sense of who I was back then,” admitting to being inpsired by Punky Brewster, Clarissa Darling and Nirvana.

Nicole Richie's Met Gala Hair: Already In the Night's Top Ten, and it Hasn't Even Started

Number 5 on our reasons of “Why We’re Excited for the Met Gala” was “Big Hair.”

And leave it to Nicole Richie to not even make us wait until the red carpet to fulfill our wishes.

PHOTOS: Check out all the star arrivals on the homepage starting at 7 p.m.!

The star left her hotel in an elegant, embroidered white gown with a high neck, which she offset with a seriously hair-raising do: an up-combed pompadour spray-painted silver that contrasted with her bronze skin and dark wine lips.

If things are getting this funky before the night even begins, we cannot wait to see what’s on its way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as we speak.

Nicole Richie: Joel Just Noticed I Have Bangs

We’ve already made it pretty clear that we find Nicole Richie both hilarious and stylish, but at the Tuesday launch party for her new AOL series #CandidlyNicole, she once again showed why she’s worthy of our valuable TV-watching time.

When asked if her husband Joel Madden ever weighs in on her style, Richie laughed. “No!” she told PEOPLE. “He just noticed I had bangs. He noticed those a year ago and we’ve been together for seven years. I’m still waiting for everything from the neck down. He just noticed my bangs.”

As it turns out, this is actually bangs phase II. The first time around, she was going through a rebellious phase, which is now filed under her most cringeworthy style moments.

“My parents didn’t want me to have bangs,” she said — adding that she cut them anyway. “Then, after realizing I had curly hair — because I was too young to realize I’d actually have to blow dry my bangs — I had curly bangs for a year. That was fun.”

And though you’ll see the high-fashion side of the star in her AOL series, at home, she can’t get out of her designer duds fast enough. “When I’m home I do not wear regular clothes. All I wear is sweats. Everything comes off, the shoes, jeans, the jewelry,” she said. “I do not wear clothes in my house.”

Significant others not noticing our haircuts? Living in sweatpants? We knew we had a lot in common with Richie.

Nicole Richie Doesn't Dress the Men in Her Life

Mar/08/2013 at 03:00 PM ET

Fashion Star mentor Nicole Richie has enough on her plate, between the show (the second season premieres tonight), her clothing lines and looking perpetually chic. So when it comes to dressing the guys in her family — well, they’re on their own.

“I do not dress Joel. Joel dresses himself,” Richie said of her husband Friday on Live With Kelly and Michael. “And he dresses [3-year-old son] Sparrow.”

Then she corrected herself: “Sparrow’s actually dressing himself now but he’s very particular,” she said. “So he needs the bandana tied around the belt, you know how Joel does it … he has to have all of his sleeves cut off of his shirts. He’s got a little curly Mohawk now!”

As far as streamlining her own style, Richie said she spends a little more on everyday items in her wardrobe, like jeans and t-shirts, then adds inexpensive extras. “I feel like if you get really great basics, then you really can just accessorize them with different things and you can make different outfits,” she said.

See Richie discuss her Live With Kelly and Michael style here, and check out Fashion Star on NBC tonight!
