Nicole Richie Reveals the Secret to Styling One of Fall’s Hottest Trends

Rocking graphic prints is tough. You run the risk of looking like you’re wearing a bedsheet, or according to Nicole Richie, something you’d find at a campsite.

“Look for prints that have a darker background and the accent is a pop of color, as opposed to a large, overall bright print,” Richie tells PEOPLE. “That’s the difference in what makes you look like a colorful tent or actually complementing the body.”

Once you find the most flattering pattern for you, the Macy’s designer recommends putting your own touch on the outfit to stand out.

“If I was telling someone how to accessorize, I would just say keep throwin’ on the jewelry, keep throwin’ on the glasses — that’s just how I do it. But you have to do what’s comfortable for you.” Tell us: Do you pile on accessories like Richie or are you a ‘less is more’ kind of girl?

We’ve never seen many similarities between Nicole Richie‘s boho aesthetic and Gwyneth Paltrow‘s classic sense of style, but the fashion icons are joining forces for one very chic cause.

Richie’s House of Harlow 1960 is the latest label to be tapped for Paltrow’s ‘GOOP Collection,’ a series of exclusive, limited-edition designer partnerships. Richie’s contribution? The “Addison” handbag, a classic snakeskin clutch in oxblood and teal with a jaguar closure on top.

According to a release, this particular project was “born out of a personal friendship between Nicole and Gwyneth” (news to us!). But it was a blast for Richie to do. “Creating an exclusive piece for GOOP was a wonderful experience,” she shares. “The Addison clutch is a staple in [my] collection and we felt it would be the perfect piece to complement everyone’s wardrobe.”

The bag is available on GOOP.com now for $225, along with offerings from MiH jeans and rag & bone.

Who knew Cindy Lou Who would be a trendsetter in 2012?

Kelly Osbourne, Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian have all recently stepped out sporting high, twisty top knots that immediately gave us flashbacks to the famous Dr. Seuss character.

The spool-like ‘do was first spotted on Osbourne during New York Fashion Week, when she took the hairstyle to the highest extremes — literally. Then just a few days later, Richie sported a mini boho version during a Good Morning America appearance. And earlier this week while promoting her hit show Down Under, Kardashian rocked a similar style, but hers was a tad thicker and more polished.

No matter how you decide to interpret the look, it’s going to be seriously head-turning — ideally in a good way. So we asked Adrianne Johnston, hairstylist at Maxine salon in Chicago, for advice on how to create the statement style at home.

Nicole Richie Carries Eight Pairs of Sunglasses in Her Bag

Sep/20/2012 at 12:00 PM ET

Is Nicole Richie a Hoarders episode waiting to happen?

Not exactly, but the designer certainly stores a ton of stuff in her purse. Richie recently emptied out the extensive contents of her bag for Harper’s Bazaar’s The Look including eight — yes, eight — pairs of sunglasses (mostly by her line House of Harlow).

And she even has a totally separate bag (within a bag) for her stash of sunnies. “This is a smart [tip]. You take the Eres bikini bags, the bags the bikinis come in,” she explains. “And this is what I carry my sunglasses in.”

How Does Nicole Richie Know When Her Kids Love Her Outfit?

Aug/31/2012 at 09:00 AM ET

If you ask Nicole Richie, her style phases have all aligned with a pop culture moment. “I’ve gone through every stage from Punky Brewster to Clarissa Explains It All, Reality Bites, Clueless,” she tells PEOPLE. “I was that girl, constantly playing around with fashion, playing around with different hair colors, different hairstyles. I still do that, and I probably won’t be stopping for a while.”

However, “playing” with fashion can have its consequences. “I’m sure that in 10 years I’ll be looking back on some things I even wore now and think, ‘What the hell was I thinking?’” she jokes.

For as bold as she is with her statements, Richie actually considers her daily style quite basic. “I think of myself as kind of a jeans and T-shirt person who just accessorizes a lot. I am probably an over-accessorizer,” she says. “It’s really easy to change up jeans and a T-shirt with shoes and sunglasses and a bag. There’s a million different ways to go ahead and do that.”

That easy routine definitely has to do with being a mom. “I get ready in 20 minutes, and sometimes it looks like I got ready in 20 minutes,” she admits. And surprisingly, her kids take notice.
