Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams were the picture of humility and grace while battling it out for best actress honors at Sunday’s Academy Awards — but behind closed doors have the stars been a bit more rough and tumble? In a satirical short conceived by artist Francesco Vezzoli and directed by Roman Polanski, the actresses mock the type of commercial seduction traditionally employed by fragrance advertisements. Set in an elegant boudoir, the starlets orbit a bottle of the imagined fragrance Greed, but when Williams gets a little too hands-on, the two engage in some Black Swan-style combat. Now that’s what we call a red-carpet showdown! For a limited time the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles has transformed the MOCA website into an exhibition space for Greed, A New Fragrance by Francesco Vezzoli, where you can check out the 60-second short. –Justine Harman

Just days before she steps onto the Oscars red carpet, Natalie Portman has slipped onto the net–as the Black Swan star’s first commercial for Miss Dior Cherie perfume makes its debut. Following in the same vein as her sexy print campaign for the scent, the video (below) was shot in Paris over three days last July by director Sofia Coppola over a soundtrack of the iconic French ’60s tune “Je t’aime… Mon non plus.” Depicting Portman in the city’s Parc Monceau, and the stairwell of a nearby townhouse, Coppola’s commercial spot for Dior shows Portman in a black evening gown borrowing, playing with and ultimately, keeping the black silk bow tie of actor Alden Ehrenreich. Gorgeous highlights like Olivia Palermo’s aren’t about changing your hair color, but rather capitalizing on your hair’s natural beauty. Stylist to the stars, Roy Teeluck tells PEOPLE that what differentiates the good from the bad in terms of treated tresses is a “less is more” approach. “My salon specializes in the Balayage technique, which is easier to maintain,” he tells us, referring to a method of hand painting highlights instead of using traditional foil. Pointing to Natalie Portman and Alexa Chung as those he thinks get the look right, Teeluck says brightening with tones that don’t vary too drastically from your natural color is “healthier for your hair, and can be customized to your desired look.” Regarding Palermo’s perfectly polished look, he says his senior stylist Michele Fury (who works on the former City star) considers many factors before adding depth with color. “Her natural skin tone and hair pigment determine the best shade for her,” which varies from warmed-up ends to coppery inflections, but never includes brassy blonde. As for achieving the look at home? “Balayage is a very specific art form for hair color and for the most part, you are best served consulting with a professional.” –Justine Harman

Much has been made of Natalie Portman‘s custom Rodarte tutus in her Oscar-nominated turn in Black Swan, but it turns out that there is a piece of her onscreen wardrobe that’s a little easier to get our hands on. When it came to designing Natalie Portman‘s engagement ring, the star’s choreographer fiancé, Benjamin Millepied, relied on his leading lady and the art of ballet for inspiration. Looking to create a one-of-a-kind love token to reflect Portman’s unique sensibilities, Millepied called on former dancer pal and jewelry designer Jamie Wolf. “Ben was exceptionally thoughtful and dedicated and patient to make sure we had everything right,” Wolf explained to InStyle. “We wanted everything about the ring to speak to things that are important to Natalie.” The glittering diamond-encrusted design centers around an antique diamond, surrounded by certified conflict-free stones and made of recycled platinum — thus appealing to Portman’s earth-friendly and vegan lifestyle. It wouldn’t be a ballet without tutus, and the making of the exquisite tutus in psycho-thriller Black Swan was no easy task. In this video, costume designers from Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte (who designed the ballerina outfits for the film) and others talk about the intricate design of the costumes and the incorporation of Swarovski crystals throughout the movie, from the tutus Natalie Portman wears on stage to the six magnificent chandeliers used on set. Swarovski—known for their precision-cut luxury crystal– provided over 250,000 crystals for the making of the film, adding to the dark, romantic aesthetics of the pivotal ballet scenes. “There is something amazing about crystals that is indescribable,” said Thérèse DePrez, Production Designer for the film. Natalie Portman has a big year ahead of her–a new engagement, a baby on the way and a big awards season coming up. But it’s not just Portman who will be burning the midnight oil in preparation. Her stylist, Kate Young, will be hard at work behind the scenes, choosing the perfect ensembles for the pregnant actress’s red carpet appearances. Young, who has been dressing Portman for the past eight years, tells the New York Times that “mum’s the word” on what the actress will wear this season, but says she has requested numerous custom dresses for the upcoming awards shows, including the Golden Globes on January 16. And while Young tells the Times that “Natalie is not that into fashion,” her stylist still sees this as a great fashion opportunity. “Natalie is beautiful and poised,” Young says. “It’s an opportunity to make the most beautiful pregnancy dress on the red carpet.” –Kim Peiffer

With Oscar buzz surrounding her Black Swan performance and the recent announcement of her first major beauty contract, things are just Dior-ific for Natalie Portman these days. But the decision to represent any brand was not an easy one for the star to make. “It was definitely a war inside my head for a long time and finally, I was like, we can actually do something very positive with this, especially given the kind of company Dior is, which is truly elegant,” the 29-year-old actress told WWD Wednesday during the New York boutique’s reopening celebration.
