Tabatha’s Takeover: Matthew McConaughey Must Be Clowning Around

We all know Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s sharp-tongued Aussie style pro, from her newest show, Tabatha Takes Over, which is in its fifth season! And now, she’s bringing her talents online, joining us at PEOPLE StyleWatch each week to dish on some of the bestand worst – celebrity looks of the week. Keep in mind the opinions below belong solely to the stylist … though she’s probably saying what lots of you are thinking, anyway!

Today, she takes on Matthew McConaughey, who ditched his cowboy boots for a plaid suit at N.Y.C.’s Mud premiere.

FINALLY! Finally I get to critique a man for PEOPLE StyleWatch and it is someone I absolutely love: Mr. Matthew McConaughey. Too bad he isn’t wearing something fabulous.

What is this clown suit he’s wearing? And what’s up with this ridiculous backdrop? Is he promoting something at the circus?

I’m actually surprised he is wearing a suit of this nature. I would say 99 percent of the time I see him on the red carpet or caught on camera (with a shirt on, anyway) he is well dressed and on trend. Why in the world did Camilla Alves let him leave the hotel looking like this? Such a shame.

If I passed him on the street before he walked into the MoMA to promote his new film Mud, I would have pulled him into a nearby men’s store, ripped off that suit and dressed him in a 3-piece navy blue suit. I’d keep the white shirt the way it is, and even consider letting the gold chain stay to keep the jacket closed.

Before sending him back out, I’d rake my fingers through his hair to break up the stiffness of all that product and let his naturally curly hair fall the way it should.

Tell us: Do you agree with Tabatha, or is she being too harsh? Let us know in the comments below!

Matthew McConaughey Likens Fashion to Food

Though he’s known for going shirtless, it turns out Matthew McConaughey actually likes getting dressed up.

“I have times where I like to just wear my flip-flops, shorts and a T-shirt and hang out. Hang up the pair of shorts and wear them the next day,” the actor told PEOPLE at the Nylon Guys September cover party at the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica, Calif, last week. But then, “there are other times when I go to events or New York or Los Angeles and like [dressing] up.”

McConaughey — the mag’s latest cover star — attended the INC-sponsored event with pregnant wife Camila Alves and spoke about personal fashion dos and don’ts, too. “I do like to keep [my style] somewhat simple. I like fashion. I’m interested in it,” he explained. “But I would say this: You see some people with fashion and they try too hard and the clothes look like an accoutrement on them. The body, the movement and the fashion don’t seem to be one.”

In fact, the actor has an interesting analogy for that misuse of clothing. “It’s almost like food,” he explained. “You have to have the product but you also have to have the presentation. You’ve eaten at restaurants where the presentation is there but the food isn’t. The two have to fit and feel like they’re a pair.” Now that’s a comparison we haven’t heard before! Tell us: Do you have a fashion philosophy?

The Sentimental Story Behind Camila Alves McConaughey’s Wedding Dress

When it came to finding the perfect wedding gown, Camila Alves McConaughey knew exactly where to turn. Chanel? Nah. Vera Wang or Monique Lhuillier? Nope.

Instead, the bride asked Brazilian dress designer Ducarmo Castelo Branco, a 78-year-old family friend, to craft a gown for her June 9 nuptials to Matthew McConaughey.

“Ducarmo has been making wedding dresses for her entire life,” says Alves, who has known the designer since she was a young girl growing up in Brazil. “I guess you can say she has been planning this design for over 20 years.”

Branco worked on the project with a group of eight local women, and Alves’s faith in that team’s vision of a dream dress — a delicate beaded lace gown — never wavered. “I went to Brazil for a day and a half to work on the dress,” the bride tells PEOPLE. “I left and I just had to trust them. They finished the dress 22 days later.”

For Matthew and Camila’s exclusive wedding album — and to see the dress up close — pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

Matthew McConaughey Cleans Up His Act — and Moves to Texas

Sharp-dressed, sharp-tongued Matthew McConaughey showed an Austin audience Thursday that he’s no stranger to some sharp scissors, too.

The actor (who shaved his head in December) took to the Texas Film Hall of Fame awards stage sporting a super-short haircut and an only slightly scruffy face — and announced that he’d recently moved his family to Texas. The star — there to honor the state’s filmmakers and actors — said that he especially appreciates the laid-back vibe of the Capitol city, Austin.

“No one recognizes you and no one asks you, ‘Hey, what do you do?,’ because I don’t think anyone cares,” McConaughey said. “Fridays show up sooner here. You want to get along in Austin, you want to get along in Texas, all you have to do is be yourself.”

McConaughey should know: he grew up in the small West Texas town of Uvalde, and went to school at the University of Texas in Austin. His love of the city brought him — along with fiancée Camila Alves, their children Levi and Vida and Alves’s mother — back four months ago.
