Moviegoers may be taken aback by Mariah Carey’s decidedly glammed-down turn in the film Precious as a dowdy social worker, and the singer herself had an even stronger reaction the first time she looked in the mirror. “I felt completely rancid!” Carey told PEOPLE at the film’s premiere at the AFI Audi Film Festival. But because the novel that the movie is based on “changed my life,” she gave herself over to director Lee Daniels’ vision for the character’s un-made-up look. “He said ‘We have a part and we really need someone, and I know you can do it,’” the singer explained. ‘”But you’re going to need to let me make you under and over and over again, and that’s what we’re gonna do.’ So I’m a big fan of Sapphire and the book Push which inspired this movie, and a huge fan of Lee Daniels so I let him do what he wanted to do.” Although it took time to adjust to the lack of grooming, Carey said the look helped her achieve a performance that’s now garnering glowing reviews. “I didn’t have to feel compelled to be always glamorous. With the music industry, it’s very like ‘Oh, she’s got a hair out of place! Go fix it!’ You know what I mean? And so this was such a liberating experience and yet humiliated me. But I needed that. We all need that. We all need to understand how to be humble, and it’s a difficult business to do that in.” And now that she’s back to her usual high-glam self, Carey’s moved past the trauma of the first glimpse in the mirror. “I’ve gotten over it,” she laughed, before turning to her husband Nick Cannon for some reassurance. “Have I gotten over it? “A little bit,” he grinned, telling reporters he had no problem with his wife’s makeunder. “I love her in every look — always!” –Scott Huver

Mariah Carey may have pushed back the release of her anticipated new album, but there’s no stopping another launch the beauty maven has in the works. Following the success of her two previous signature scents, M by Mariah Carey and Luscious Pink, the singer is poised to hit another high note with a new fragrance for fall — and she’s debuting her sexy ads online exclusively on PEOPLE.com. “Fragrance is so personal,” she tells PEOPLE, “and Forever captures that glamorous feeling that I want to share with my fans.” The opulent floral scent, which will start at $42 for a 1-oz. spray, will contain notes of lotus blossom, tuberose, gardenia, exotic woods and white musk. Gracing magazines is nothing new for Salma Hayek, but now the actress is venturing into literature with an appearance on the front cover of hairstylist Robert Vetica’s book, Good to Great Hair. At Thursday’s Moroccanoil-sponsored launch party for the tome, which offers hairstyles and advice based on hair type, the star, who wrote the forward to the book, revealed what led her to become involved in the project with Vetica, whose other A-list clients include Jennifer Lopez, Marion Cotillard, Mariah Carey, Renee Zellweger and Naomi Watts. “I think it’s great that women can get ideas of what is best for them without having to go to somebody who’s super-expensive like Robert is in real life,” she told PEOPLE. Another famous fan, Debra Messing, said that Vetica encouraged her to love her curly locks. “Every day was an interesting hair moment growing up,” she revealed. “One of the first things that Robert taught me was that it was not a disaster. He was like, ‘Your hair is fabulous and it could do anything!’” she says. Hayek, added, “When he does my hair for an event, the blow-dry lasts for four or five days. Good news for Mariah Carey fans. The singer has just announced that following the success of her first scent last year, she will be launching a new sparkling floral this September. Luscious Pink by Mariah Carey will have notes of Tahitian tiare flower — just like the original M by Mariah Carey scent — but will change it up with a bouquet of lily of the valley, pink peony and a touch of white musk. As for why she decided to create a second scent with Elizabeth Arden, Mimi reveals, “Launching my first perfume was such an amazing experience that it has inspired me to expand my fragrance collection.” But it’s the newlywed’s description of Luscious Pink as “an ethereal…scent that reflects the delicately sensual, feminine and optimistic side of me that is so present today in my music, my fragrance and my life,” has us intrigued. Two iconic singers known for their high heels and micro hemlines, but when it comes to throwing out the first pitch in style, who strikes out? Victoria Beckham memorably stepped up to the pitcher’s mound at Dodgers Stadium last summer in short-shorts and Dries Van Noten wedge sneakers. Mariah Carey is the ultimate sexy diva, while Miley Cyrus is the quintessential good girl. What do these two singing superstars have in common? Apparently, their taste in fashion! We saw Mariah step out in her clinging purple sweaterdress, cropped black jacket and black suede boots last month, only to spot the Hannah Montana star in a practically identical outfit in Toronto over the weekend. Mariah Carey has an established over-the-top style — but even knowing her love for big hair, slinky dresses and high heels, our jaws still dropped over the shoes she wore out to dinner in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. The singer (and new perfume maven) headed out to eat in a pair of Giambattista Valli platform heels that have a staggering five and a half inch heel on them (135 mm, to be exact). We cannot imagine being able to take one step in a pair of heels that high, much less spend a whole night out in them (although it does look like Mariah is getting a little help)! What was it like collaborating with Elizabeth Arden?
“It was so much fun working with Elizabeth Arden. I mean, I never expected such a huge corporation to feel like a family. and that’s what it feels like to me. Like every time I work with them, they’re so welcoming in terms of the concepts. If I have an idea or something that inspires me, there’s never a time where they’ve been like ‘No, we hate that.’ Every single person from Arden has been fabulous.”

Did you tell them what your favorite scents were?
“Before I went there, I told them some of my favorite smells, and I described the Tiare flower — and they actually knew what it was. They had never used it as a base for any person before. When I got there, there was this huge board of all the things that I said that I loved. The thing about the blue grotto, Capri, and just all these references that I had given them. The sunset. It looked like it was a done finished thing. I didn’t realize how next level it was going to be. It was really amazing.”

So then you went back and forth with the perfumers? Did it take a couple of tries?
Well, we went to a few different perfumers and every time we would test a different fragrance. It was very similar to writing and recording a song for me. And not everybody realizes that I write my own songs — and they definitely don’t realize that I produce them. It’s a process that I’m really used to. They have told me that no one has been this involved in creating their own fragrance before. So I was like ‘Oh, that’s cool.’”

Where do you spray the perfume?
What I do is I spray it — and then walk into it.

Mariah Carey has never been one to go the low-key route with fashion — from big hair to little dresses, Mariah goes for high-drama at all times. So, why would that stop when she’s wearing as little as possible? The singer hit the ocean in Italy in a custom-made Roberto Cavalli string bikini with some pretty large bling, from her dangling earrings to her major Cavalli necklace. We can’t say that it’s a look that we would personally rock (see our tan-line phobias), but we can see how others would find it super-sexy. We want to know what you think!
