Lena Dunham Gets Our Style Standing Ovation

Feb/18/2013 at 06:00 PM ET

From her show, Girls, to her hilarious Twitter feed, Lena Dunham makes it so easy for us to like her. Her style, on the other hand, has been a bit more challenging.

So when we spotted her in this great little Reed Krakoff dress at the Writers’ Guild Awards Sunday night (where she picked up a Best New Series trophy), we figured we’d send her our internet approval in hopes that this is the beginning of a trend.

The reason her Reed Krakoff look (worn with shoes by the designer and Fred Leighton jewelry) works so well for Dunham is that it’s true to the quirkier styles she prefers without being purposefully unflattering (something she admits to doing on the Girls set).

And though she’s open about wearing whatever designer clothing she gets sent, this outfit looks made for her: it fits well, highlights her face and — best of all — she appears comfortable in it, no shoe removal required. And that’s something we can stand up and cheer for.

Tell us: Do you like Dunham’s look?

There were plenty of noteworthy dresses on the Grammy Awards red carpet Sunday night, however, three of our favorite looks belonged to supportive significant others who let their loves take the spotlight outside — but joined them indoors for the party.

Fun.’s biggest (and possibly most famous) fan, Lena Dunham, showed support for her boyfriend, the band’s guitarist Jack Antonoff, in a radiant yellow dress (worn with Forevermark diamonds) that could be seen even in long shots of the auditorium. She not only got to return the favor Antonoff paid by cheering her on at the Golden Globes, but she also got face time with her Twitter pal Taylor Swift.

While everyone else is buzzing about what the four stars of Girls wore to the season two kickoff event, it was what creator Lena Dunham didn’t wear that has us in the PEOPLE offices talking.

The actress arrived in a strapless Valentino jumpsuit and quickly divulged some very personal info: “I’m not wearing underwear,” Dunham told reporters at the premiere, hosted by HBO with The Cinema Society, in N.Y.C. on Wednesday night. Dunham called the move “liberating.”

The Secret Behind Lena Dunham’s ‘Lovingly Disheveled’ ‘Girls’ Wardrobe

There are several reasons why everyone loves the show Girls (aside from the hilariously realistic plot lines). One of the biggest: the clothes.

The star and show’s creator, Lena Dunham, puts as much thought into the characters’ wardrobes as she does the witty dialogue. “We spend a lot of time talking about that outfit you can’t believe you wore but you know you spent three days dreaming up,” she tells the New York Times. “The clothes are really meant to reflect the fantasy the girls have about themselves and are sort of unsuccessfully fulfilling.”

Lena Dunham Is Grateful for Free Designer Clothes

Being famous has its perks — and Lena Dunham is just discovering one of them. The actress tells V magazine that since hitting it big with her HBO show Girls, she’s been receiving lots of lovely presents from fashion designers.

“I cannot deny it, and I cannot get over it. And they actually send [clothes] in my size,” she says. “They fit, and what people should know is that I always wear them. Somehow even if I wouldn’t have bought it, the fact that it was free and my grandma’s depression-era mentality make me think it is the most beautiful thing I ever owned, and I wear it for several days straight.”

Dunham — who’s displayed an eclectic sense of style so far — first made fashion waves at the Met Gala in May, when she wore a custom emerald-green Wes Gordon high-low dress with bright-pink Stella McCartney pumps. Then for the Emmys in September, she chose a navy Prada lace gown with short sleeves (our personal favorite). And most recently, Dunham donned a color-block navy and cream below-the-knee Roksanda Ilincic dress with gold platforms for November’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards.
