It’s not everyday a girl has a section all of her own in Barneys New York, so to celebrate the opening of Gaga’s Workshop in Manhattan last night, Lady Gaga went all out, wearing a princess-like, one-of-a-kind Karl Lagerfeld creation.

The white tweed dress with black trim was made especially for the occasion, and featured Chanel pearls, camelias and bows.

While the dress was breathtaking, it’s Gaga’s Workshop that’s really something to see. The boutique, inside the Madison Avenue Barneys department store, is filled with whimsical gifts from candy (like a 2-lb. solid chocolate armadillo shoe) and hair bows made from hair to custom jewelry and leather jackets. There are snow globes, holiday ornaments, teacups, fake nails, plush Little Monsters, cookies, totes, T-shirts and everything in between at a variety of price points.

According to a Barneys spokeswoman, Gaga approved every item before the boutique’s opening, and her friend and stylist Nicola Formichetti was “instrumental” in the conception of the space. (Lady Gaga songs and holiday music even play as you shop!) As part of the agreement, 25 percent of all sales will benefit Gaga’s charitable organization, the Born This Way Foundation.

When Lady Gaga teamed up with Cher to record a duet for the music legend’s upcoming album, it was a match made in music — and fashion — heaven.

And in a recent interview with PEOPLE in which she answered questions from readers, Lady Gaga revealed she considered Cher a style icon while she was growing up. Her favorite ensemble? The leather jacket and leotard combo from the singer’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” video.

“I dress like that!” says Lady Gaga. “That’s my everyday look. Maybe just sort of subliminally when I was younger, without even realizing it, one day I knew that was the kind of woman I would become.”

Is it true you and your sister are creating a fashion line?

No, we’re not creating one together, but she’s working on her own work and she’s really incredibly talented and I’m so proud of her.

With a wardrobe as wild and wacky as yours, is there anything that you wouldn’t wear?

There are so many things I wouldn’t wear! I’m really just anyone else when I get dressed. I just have a particular style and things that I like. I have these Norma Kamali black jersey pants that I wear for rehearsal and things. I’m not prejudiced against sweatpants. My form of sweatpants is just a bra and panties. Everyone’s asked me that, like I have some vendetta. Wear what you like, be who you are.

What do you keep in your purse at all times?

I borrowed my friend’s the other day, and when she got it back, it had a red Ruby Woo lipstick, fake fingernails, a light-up unicorn and perfume. And she said, “Only you would leave that!”

MEET HOLLYWOOD’S MOST FASHIONABLE FRIENDS

She’s a recent high school graduate with porcelain skin, an enviously thick fringe and heavy-lidded eyes, but Natali Germanotta isn’t the next Hollywood ingénue; she’s Lady Gaga‘s little sister.

With a pop culture résumé that can be summed up with a cameo in the 2009 “Telephone” video and accompanying her sister to this year’s CFDAs, the Parsons fashion student says she isn’t capitalizing on big sis’s big connections. Going to school “is about learning what you need for your career,” she says in the September issue of Teen Vogue.

And while Germanotta isn’t interested in raiding her sister’s closet — “Some of the stuff she wears I’d be like, ‘No, never.’” — the 19-year-old fully encourages the spectacle. “She asked me, ‘Should I dress really conservative and look not like myself, or should I do it over-the-top and freak everybody out?,’” she recalls of helping her sis dress for her recent high school graduation ceremony. “And I was like, ‘The latter, definitely the latter.’” (For the record, Gaga did not disappoint, opting for a rhinestone-encrusted bodysuit and beekeeper headgear.)

So does having the megastar as an older sister have any benefits? “Whenever I wear something crazy and my dad gives me a hard time, I say, ‘Well, at least I’m not walking out on the street with red pasties,’ and he’ll be like, ‘Good point.’”

She’s generally all about costumes and alter egos, but in the October issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Lady Gaga proves she’s just as fierce without all the props. “Whether I’m wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I’m always the same person inside,” she tells the magazine, posing barefaced on the cover. “I think what has been lovely about my relationship with the public is that they expect something unexpected from me.”

And despite managing to consistently shock fans and critics with her getups — she even sported protrusions on her cheekbones last time she graced the cover of the mag — when it comes to her own self-image, she says she’s quite comfortable in her own skin. “I’m very free-spirited,” she says. “Even when I was a kid, I used to run around naked with the babysitter, driving her crazy.”

When the star isn’t running around the world or making a statement on the dance floor, she stays in shape with other activities. “I do yoga, I do Bikram and I run, and I eat really healthy. You know, my work sort of feeds me. I keep in shape by working hard.”

VOTE ON STARS’ MAKEUP CHANGES

Baby bumps, Britney tributes and Bruno bashing — oh my! The MTV Video Music Awards were filled with many buzz-worthy moments last night, but the style choices of several stars gave us just as much to talk about.

Lady Gaga started the two-hour show as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, wearing Brooks Brothers pants, a men’s jacket, little makeup and a short black wig. She convincingly stayed in character (and costume) all night, even hitting on Britney Spears while presenting her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj hit the black carpet in a jagged bodysuit accessorized with plush creatures, knee-highs and lots of colorful hair. “Tokyo inspired this outfit,” she told reporters during the show. “Harajuku is something I have been absorbing for a long time.”

Though Justin Bieber one-upped her in the shock-value department — he brought his pet snake, Johnson, along for the ride — his accessories were slightly more demure; namely, his DITA Senator glasses. “I was just going for something fun and youthful and not too put together,” he told reporters. “Something that would go good with the cheetah shoes.”

But Beyoncé‘s accessory was the best of all: she debuted her baby bump in a flowing orange Lanvin gown, later revealing it for the television crowds in a Dolce & Gabbana tux following her performance of “Love on Top.”

It was Katy Perry, though, who became the night’s quick-change artist, starting out in an Atelier Versace geisha-style mini-dress, complete with parasol. To introduce Adele, the big nominee slipped into a long, high-necked purple gown, a departure from her usually revealing wardrobe. She ended the night in Dior Couture, sporting a pink top paired with a black-and-white tulip-shaped skirt and yellow cube-shaped hat, but not before looking like a broken record — literally! — in a sparkly black dress accented with vinyl bearing her name.

“I just felt like being colorful and fun and with me, I am okay with self-deprecation,” Perry told reporters. “I am all right with being laughed at and laughed with and just laughing, so that was the inspiration of tonight: just to have a laugh.”

Forget little monsters: this year, Lady Gaga is recruiting little elves.

The stylish star is collaborating with Barneys New York to create the Gaga Workshop, a holiday campaign driven by the pop icon’s personal take on Santa’s workshop. The entire fifth floor of New York’s iconic Madison Avenue Barneys store (plus the building’s street-level windows) will be decorated with her whimsical creations, made with the help of Mugler creative director (and friend) Nicola Formichetti and artists from Assume Vivid Astro Focus.

According to WWD, the fifth floor will also be filled with limited-edition gift items developed by Gaga; from candies and toys to apparel, accessories, candles and cosmetics, the shop will feature a range of stocking-stuffer items as well as books and CDs hand-picked by the singer. And, in true Gaga style, expect to find some exceptionally unique items like jewelry made entirely of rock candy, lipsticks in special red and pink hues, lip-shaped, hand-painted dark chocolate and an exclusive Rubik’s Cube. Barneys will donate 25 percent of sales from items in the workshop to the charity of Gaga’s choice, too.

The workshop opens in mid-November and runs through Jan. 2, giving you plenty of time to stock up on stocking stuffers (select items will be available on barneys.com, too). GET STAR LOOKS FOR LESS

Gone are the green highlights, the sheer dresses, the face masks and the leather … is Lady Gaga growing up? The singing star stepped out several times over the weekend looking polished and — dare we say — demure!

Friday, Gaga wore a black one-shoulder cocktail dress from Versace’s fall/winter 2011 collection, her hair brushed and blonde, her heels plain black. Saturday, she left a recording studio toting a black Versace clutch and donning a sheer, yet tasteful, one-shoulder black chiffon evening gown. Then Sunday, Gaga impressed again, this time in a yellow snakeskin print cocktail dress, also from the fall/winter 2011 collection, belted and paired with Christian Louboutin heels.

In June, Gaga declared she’d be wearing strictly Versace for two solid months. Though she’s deviated from that promise, wearing Ferragamo and Yves Saint Laurent, too, perhaps she’s finding her way with the Italian fashion house? Or maybe that best-dressed title is causing her to make a fashion flip-flop. Regardless, we want to know: What do you think of Gaga’s new look?

It’s been an exciting year for the Duchess of Cambridge: a royal wedding, a North American Tour and now, a spot on Vanity Fair‘s International Best-Dressed List. Her first appearance on the list came in 2008, and a whirlwind of fashion successes since has earned her this illustrious second nod. Kate has gained worldwide recognition for her signature mix of high and low fashion, recycling looks, wearing accessible labels and dressing down for daily tasks. Though she also knows how to make a glamorous entrance — a skill that will serve her well as a member of the royal family.

Some other highlights of the annual list include President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama, named together as a well-dressed couple; expectant French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy; and newly married Princess Charlene of Monaco. From Hollywood’s royal ranks come actors Justin Timberlake, Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan, plus musicians like Lady Gaga and Janelle Monáe.

Milliner Philip Treacy has received much buzz for his one-of-a-kind fascinators, especially those worn at the royal wedding. And now he’s reportedly sharing his sacred hat-making skills with one of his biggest clients: Lady Gaga! Treacy tells the U.K.’s Observer that Gaga, already a fan of his work, is ready to be his next apprentice. “She plans to,” Treacy reveals of her intent to intern with him. “She’s already visited me.” After requesting to work with the designer last spring, it appears that the collaboration is finally beginning. “This is what happened: one Monday morning, four burly bodyguards arrived — Lady Gaga’s security team — to check out the security of the building,” Treacy explains. “I looked at them as if to say, ‘What?! Who is going to take a pot shot at Lady Gaga?’ Anyway, she is young, talented and peculiar — which I like.” Given that Treacy’s hats are sometimes controversial — namely the love-it-or-hate-it headpiece worn by Princess Beatrice in April, which netted $130,000 for charity at auction — it seems only fitting that Gaga would be interested in his creation process. “A person carries off the hat,” Treacy says. “Hats are about emotion. PRINCESS BEATRICE: ROYALLY MAD HATTER

Lady Gaga may be known for her unpredictable style, but the singing star claims that for the time being, she’s a one-label lady. While in Germany for the finale of Germany’s Next Top Model, the Fame Monster told BANG Showbiz, “I’m wearing only Versace for like the next two months,” adding, “I’m having a love affair with Donatella [Versace].” Sporting her seafoam green wig du jour, she continued, “Right now what I’m wearing is an archive Gianni Versace. This was never seen before. It is a dress that was made before he died.” Continuing her style streak two days later, the singer arrived to perform at EuroPride Rome in a very ’90s vintage Versace blouse and pants combo (right). Two days later, while appearing on the French TV show Taratatà, she opted for mixed prints, also by the designer (left). Then Sunday, Gaga turned up at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto (below) wearing four different Versace looks — and even clothed her dancers in the brand’s T-shirts, as well. The pièce de résistance, however, is the barely-there leather corset and shorts ensemble she wears in her smokin’ new “Edge of Glory” music video. “I am greatly honored that Lady Gaga chose to wear a Versace Vintage look,” Donatella Versace said in a statement. “I believe that my brother Gianni would have appreciated her talent. We’re used to seeing Lady Gaga without pants, flashing skin and pushing fashion boundaries, but at the CFDA Awards in New York City Monday night, the singer nearly bared it all. Walking the red carpet at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Gaga — who received the Fashion Icon Award — seriously turned heads in a colorful bob, black bustier, sheer bodysuit and 10-inch black platforms. “You heard the fans screaming,” Kathy Griffin told PEOPLE. “The moment she showed up … the monsters [had] their claws out. I stopped dead in my tracks.” To accept her award, Gaga removed her Mugler skirt, leaving her in the sheer bodysuit, which got a bit X-rated as it slipped down (and left nothing to the imagination from the back). Nonetheless, the singer entertained the crowd with her tales of Vogue editor Anna Wintour. “When I was told I won this award, Anna Wintour sent me a text message. She text messages,” she deadpanned. “It said, ‘We’re so excited to tell you that you won a CFDA Fashion Icon Award.’” Thinking she’d received a text from a friend named Anna — “I have a couple of Annas in my phone,” she admitted — Gaga wrote back as a friend would. “My reply was, ‘Yes bitch, we did it!’” she recalled. “Quite quickly, I got a reply that said, ‘How lovely. And we will all be waiting to see what you will wear.’ And I thought, ‘Well, won’t you help me choose what I will wear?’ And then I said, ‘Oh …. Ack. It’s Anna Wintour.’” Gaga later stripped down further during an after-party at the Standard Hotel, covering the bare essentials with black pasties, a sheer suit and a spike-adorned thong. From trendsetter to tech nerd! Polaroid creative director Lady Gaga‘s innovations for the brand are finally hitting stores after their splashy unveiling in January. Gaga’s first product under the Grey Label line, the GL10 instant printer, was launched at an event at Bloomingdale’s N.Y.C. flagship store; the $170 device will be sold exclusively at the department store until mid-June, when it will also be available on HSN and at Costco.
