With her period drama The Duchess heading into theaters, PEOPLE caught up with Keira Knightley in Toronto to get her take on her icon-like style. “Have I managed to get to fashion icon status?” asked a shocked Keira. The modest star admits that she likes getting dressed up, but that she is definitely more of a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl. When she takes on the red carpet, Keira believes in going all out. Among her favorite recent gowns is a pink Chanel number she wore to last year’s Venice Film Festival. “I took one look at it and said ‘That’s far too girly, I’m not wearing that,”" recalls the star. “[But, then] I put it on and went ‘Oooh, this is fantastic!’” Though Keira has made headlines in some of the most beautiful gowns ever, they aren’t hanging in her closet. “I’m like Cinderella, they all go back at the end of the night.” Even still, it’s not too shabby to rock Chanel for the night! Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley are both known for their quirky British style — so what happens when you cast them both in the same film? Not only do they become close friends, but apparently they coordinate their red carpet outfits! The stars spent their day promoting The Edge of Love at the Edinburgh Film Festival. First, they hit a photocall in matching booties and black accents. But they hit the nighttime premiere in ’30s-inspired black and white — Sienna in long fringe and a bowler hat, Keira in a Chanel jumpsuit and bolero. UPDATE: Turns out that Keira was just trying out a new look. Her stylist, Adir of Frederic Fekkai, created the illusion of bangs for the Los Angeles premiere. He tells PEOPLE of the star, “She’s confident enough to take the risk and know that it’s fashion and you can’t take it too seriously. It’s just a look. I thought she looked edgy and [like] a girl who has confidence.”

Kate Moss did it first, followed by Zooey Deschanel, Katie Holmes and now Keira Knightley joins the stylish list with her blunt eyebrow-grazing bangs. Only a few days after an appearance in New York with her usual soft waves, the actress turned up at the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie Atonement sporting darker hair and drastic new fringe. Summertime and the shopping is easy, at least for Keira Knightley. The actress has been taking advantage of some sunshine (rare this summer in London) to show off some cute — and cheap — dresses she picked up at Topshop. She wore a $70 black cotton sundress to stroll in the park with boyfriend Rupert Friend, and slipped into a $64 green pinafore dress twice in the past two weeks — clearly doing her part to bring down the price-per-wear quickly. Of course, her $930 Chanel gold metallic python “Antigone” sandals, worn with her green dress, does bring the price of the whole outfit straight back up. . .

We are totally excited to see the last installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy this weekend but we know one thing about it — Keira Knightley’s lips will be perfectly lined in At World’s End. Keira adores the No. 7 Perfect Lips Liner in Nude from British fave Boots so much she had a shipment sent to her while shooting the movies in the Bahamas. And scoring Keira’s favorite pencil is a lot easier than figuring out how to get paid to hang out with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom on a beach — pick one up for yourself at cvs.com, $7.

Sometimes a photo does inspire at least 1000 words. The blogosphere was buzzing over Keira Knightley’s recent outfit donned during a grocery- shopping excursion with perma-grunge boyfriend Rupert Friend. It’s probably not a cut up pillowcase (as mentioned on Go Fug Yourself ) or a tucked up sheet (as mentioned on PopSugar ). My guess is that it’s a skirt doing double duty as a strapless sundress, a look seen on multi-tasking NYC fashionistas. Barring sudden movements or stiff breezes, the belt-as-bra is holding up this concoction for dear life. When most starlets wear a dress once and banish it to the back of the closet forever, you have to at least admire Keira’s desire to get the max out of her wardrobe. — Melisssa Liebling-Goldberg
