For her 33rd birthday celebration in New York Sunday night, Katie Holmes stepped out with husband Tom Cruise, 5-year-old daughter Suri and one other familiar something: a $1,250 silk Holmes & Yang jumpsuit layered over delicate lace.

Three years ago, after her debut performance in All My Sons on Broadway, Holmes, then a burgeoning designer, selected the same outfit in a contrasting color scheme. Layering the strapless silhouette over a finespun blouse, the actress received conflicting reviews for both her performance — and the sartorial choice.

Critics be damned, the star revisited the look Sunday night, wearing a black version (which she also wore in October) with a mock turtleneck blouse and black-and-white T-straps. Imagine ringing your best friend to ask that silly question girls ask, “What are you wearing?” and having her respond, “Why not something one of us designed?”

That’s the reality for real-life pals, Katie Holmes (who helms Holmes & Yang) and Victoria Beckham, whose colorful, yet restrained collection consistently sells out on luxury e-tailer Net-A-Porter. “We go to the same events, and we’ll call each other to ask, ‘What color are you wearing?’” Holmes tells ELLE. “I’m always interested in what she’s liking for the season.”

And Holmes isn’t the designer’s only A-list fan. “When we have Victoria’s stuff in the studio, it’s the first thing Cameron Diaz tries on,” stylist Rachel Zoe says of her client. “But any woman would feel sexy in her dresses.”

All of that feedback must be humbling for Beckham, who was anxious to tell another designer pal of plans to take her knack for fashion to the big leagues. “We went out to dinner one night, and he said, ‘I saw that you put out a collection,’” she recalls of breaking the news to Marc Jacobs. “I felt embarrassed to tell Marc Jacobs that I — me, ex-Spice Girl, married to a footballer — was creating a fashion line.”

She may put on the ritz for the red carpet, but when it comes to daytime dressing, Katie Holmes is all about building blocks.

As a guest editor on WhoWhatWear.com, the star highlights her must-haves for fall, including a cropped blazer from her own line, Holmes & Yang. “It has a great fit and goes with my jeans or over an evening dress,” she says. And though the stylish topper has a hefty price tag of $2,125, Holmes insists it’s a worthy investment: “I wear it about four times a week.”

But while the designer’s outerwear is aspirational, other favorites include a $98 cable knit sweater from J.Crew, which Holmes can’t wait to pair with pleated maxis, and $110 “Tivoli” plaid boots from Sorel. “I hope to be caught in some great snowstorms in these boots,” she tells the style site. “A feminine design for such a practical shoe.”

The final piece to her fail-proof look? A pair of $189 7 for all Mankind “Swiss-Dot” bootlegs. “I love the way these jeans fit,” she says. “They are a great go-to.”

Katie Holmes always manages to look fabulous when she’s on (and off) the red carpet, but the August InStyle cover girl says there’s a fine line between becoming a fashion do — and a fashion don’t. “I’m not afraid to try a new designer or do something trendy, but it has to look right on my body,” the Holmes & Yang designer tells the magazine. “You don’t want to look like a fashion victim!” To prevent any missteps, she has a list of looks she avoids. “Certain colors don’t work on me; yellow isn’t my friend. I don’t like big, pouffy sleeves. And some dresses, like if it has a big bow and skirt, are too old-ladyish on me. If I can wear it when I’m 80 I’m going to wait.” Speaking of 80, the actress says she hopes to “age gracefully.” And if not? “I’ll have to figure it out,” she jokes. “But I don’t think I’m ever going to do my lips — my sisters would kill me!” Telling InStyle that she’s very close with her three older sisters, the actress says she loved when they’d put makeup on her and comb her hair. Little did they know she’d later experiment with her tresses, dealing with the trials and tribulations of bobs and bangs, among other styles. But the star says it’s her current, long locks that suit her best. “Long hair makes me feel most like myself,” she shares. “And it’s much easier to deal with. If you have short hair and you’re having a bad hair day, it’s pretty obvious.” But what makes bad hair days a little better? According to Holmes, nice undies — her favorite splurge. “They make you feel special when you put them on in the morning,” she explains. “Even when I was a little girl I loved my ‘days of the week’ pairs. Katie Holmes has been sporting an intricate band in addition to her everyday wedding sparkler, but what’s the significance of the oversize bauble? PEOPLE checked in with the design team behind Hoorsenbuhs, the L.A.-based jeweler that customized Holmes’s layered “Phantom Clique” ring, to get the scoop. Comprised of rose gold and white diamonds, the one-of-a-kind piece ranges in price from $10,500 to upwards of $15,000, says brand liaison Kether Parker. And while he won’t reveal the technique behind its construction, a customized ring can take four to six weeks to develop. “Our clients can create, with our designs, a more personal combination of metals and diamonds,” explains Parker, adding that options range from yellow gold to blue diamonds. “Bespoke commissions are what our brand was founded on.” So how involved was Holmes in her own layered tri-link design? “It was a complete surprise to her,” he confides. –Justine Harman

Madonna wore a dress from Miu Miu‘s fall/winter 2011 collection, while Beyoncé performed in a tuxedo-inspired leotard and hot red heels. LOOK BACK ON WINFREY’S STORIED CAREER IN ‘CELEBRATING OPRAH’

Tom Cruise‘s oldest daughter is joining the family business. While Isabella “Bella” Cruise won’t be lighting up the silver screen anytime soon, she’s recently taken on the role of apprentice at stepmom Katie Holmes‘s fashion label Holmes & Yang. “Kate’s designing and [Bella] is just working her way up,” a beaming Tom Cruise told PEOPLE at the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Museum of Tolerance National Tribute Dinner in Beverly Hills Thursday, where he was joined by Holmes and son Connor. “She’s an artist, Bella, so it’s really great that she gets to work with it,” he added. “She’s loving it.” While her family gathered at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel to support Cruise, who was honored with the Humanitarian Award, 18-year-old Bella was on a flight back from New York City where she’s been learning about the burgeoning Holmes & Yang line. “This is my wife’s company, so you talk about movie sets with me, I can tell you [about] that,” Cruise joked while attempting to explain what exactly his daughter is doing with her step-mom’s brand. “You’ve got to go to all these different factories and verify and make sure you get the correct clothes,” he said. READ UP ON OTHER CELEBRITY DESIGNERS

Katie Holmes has a unique perspective on the fashion industry. She’s a designer, collaborating on the high-end line Holmes & Yang; a model, representing Ann Taylor’s Spring 2011 collection; and a fashion plate, wearing designer duds wherever she goes. So where does she get her great style ideas? “I raid my friends’ closets,” she admitted to PEOPLE recently at an Ann Taylor event in L.A. “I’m always inspired by them. I tend to say, ‘Do you mind if I copy you?’” When she is emulating pals, she’s sure to highlight her waist — “I have a sense of what works on me and what doesn’t,” she shared — and give her body some shape. “I try not to wear dresses that look like muumuus, even if they happen to be in style,” she explained. “I can’t pull it off!” Another trend she’s wary of? Flashing her midriff. “I’m so over a cropped T-shirt or anything that shows my belly button,” Holmes said. “I went down that road; you can only do it when you’re young!” The star, who favors maxi skirts and tank tops in warm weather and generally wears flats — though she likes “the look of a heel” — says she always gets a boost when she hears from a certain critic, too. “Suri has great taste,” she shared. “I always feel complimented when she says, ‘Can I have that when I grow up?’” –Aili Nahas

In her new miniseries The Kennedys, Katie Holmes looks perfectly poised in the role of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — a task that, as it turns out, required some serious prep work in the costume department. Holmes’s 45-look wardrobe was created in part by costume designer Chris Hargadon, who said perfecting the outfits required meticulous attention to detail, something both he and Holmes were prepared for. “She came with a lot of research under her belt and she had certain likes,” Hargadon tells StyleList.com. “She loved Jackie’s style in clothes, the simplicity of the lines, the fabric and workmanship.” Among the challenging outfits in the mix was a pink day suit and pillbox hat the First Lady wore the day her husband was assassinated, created for the series by Giorgio Armani. “[Katie] and Tom [Cruise] have a relationship with Armani, and when they found out she was doing the project, they asked to make her clothes,” Hargadon explains. “So we told them she would need 45 or 50 looks for all the episodes and they had to be done in about 72 days. They came back and said, ‘Then, we’d like to do two.’” (They also designed her inaugural gown.) Hargadon’s ultimate favorite, though, was a pink silk ballgown the First Lady reportedly received from a king. “I took pictures to a friend who trained as an Italian textiles designer,” Hargadon explains. “She painted a silk fabric for me, the lotus blossoms, the fronds. It almost looks like Chinese embroidery. I don’t even know if the piece made the final cut, but it was an incredible effort.” The Kennedys concludes Sunday on Reelz. Partnering with luxury bag maker Valextra, and alongside style partner in crime, Jeanne Yang, Holmes has designed two versions of a luxe, calkfskin tote (pictured here in blue) for the aptly named Valextra for Holmes & Yang collection. The splurge of a bag retails at $3,950 and will also be available in white with navy or shiny black trim exclusively at Barney’s this July. Though the average customer may balk at the hefty price tag, Holmes says you are investing in the brand’s craftsmanship when you buy. “Their quality is exceptional,” she tells WWD of the Italian design house. “There’s such integrity in their work — they’re artists.” And for his part, Valextra’s CEO, Emanuele Carminati Molina, recognizes the power of Holmes and Yang as a tastemakers. “I knew that it was good for Valextra to try, and to mix our style with their style,” he says. The mystery has been solved: Katie Holmes was cheating on her hair stylist! Well, in a movie, that is. Tuesday night, the actress revealed The Decision, a short film she shot for John Frieda’s new Precision Foam Colour, which was teased online last week. In the four-minute flick, Holmes plays Joan Hudson, an American movie star who’s gone missing, and reportedly split from her colorist beau. As she tries to flee by airplane, she’s stopped by security, and when her bag is searched, boxes of the foam are found. John Frieda stylist Harry Josh, who coiffed Holmes’s hair for the movie and Tuesday’s premiere, says the actress was excited to do the promotion. “She said it was a really fun project,” he told PEOPLE. “She told me she was attracted to the whole short-film concept.” For The Decision, Josh said he “structured” her hair. “It was very dramatic … very clean,” he explained. So for the premiere, held at New York City club Lavo, he took it to the other extreme. “We did something incredibly soft, loose, natural and totally easy. When celebrities translate their fame into fashion, they usually go one of two ways: licensed goods (a la Jessica Simpson‘s $1 billion empire) or the high-end, aspirational, route. Katie Holmes and her partner in Holmes & Yang, stylist Jeanne Yang, have unabashedly gone the latter. “Sometimes when life gets really busy you don’t want to have to think about what it is you’re going to wear,” Holmes tells New York magazine of the style quandary that inspired the collection, now in its second season at Barneys New York. “You just want to have certain pieces that you know you can just depend on.” For Holmes and Yang, those wardrobe staples include $1,400 slouch blazers and $1,250 pencil skirts, whose hefty price tags they attribute to local production. “We can make some of the most beautiful luxury pieces here,” Yang says of the made-in-New-York collection. “Kate and I are always talking about how we’re Americans, and we want people to realize this, and so our price points — you know we don’t have the best margins but it doesn’t matter for us.” And for her part, Holmes has similar priorities: “It’s more important that it’s made in the U.S.A.” –Justine Harman

Style stars like Katie Holmes and Kim Kardashian have turned into Hollywood heroes, recently starring in the new Buy Life ad campaign for Alicia Keys‘ Keep a Child Alive initiative, which raises money for those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. Other A-listers like Usher and Serena Williams are also lending their faces to the charitable campaign, stripping down to jeans and T-shirts that feature unique scannable bar codes, which make easier than ever to donate to the charity. “With the launch of our Buy Life campaign, I am confident less people will needlessly have to die because of lack of proper care which means more children will still have parents to raise them and guide them.
