Why Kate Hudson’s Ann Taylor Shoot Was So Painful

Kate Hudson put her acting skills to good use for her new Ann Taylor holiday campaign. Despite being in excruciating pain during the shoot, she managed to look happy and glowing.

“I had my first horrible wisdom tooth experience,” Hudson reveals in the behind-the-scenes video (below). “I was just pulsating at the mouth.” Shot at the Highline Stages in New York City, the campaign draws inspiration from a deco dinner party.

The holiday collection, which is available this week at Ann Taylor stores and online, features chic party dresses, on-trend tops, printed pants and skirts, as well as a full line of accessories, which Hudson plans on giving as gifts this holiday season. “I love the jewelry. The scarves are great, they’re doing leather gloves and cute little slippers,” Hudson says. She adds, “I love that there’s still color in holiday. They’re still incorporating bold, bright colors and prints.”

Red Carpet Trend Report: What’s Sizzling and What’s Fizzling

While designers were showcasing their spring 2013 collections at New York Fashion Week, the stars were stepping out on the red carpet in fall’s hottest looks. Here are two trends we want to see more of, plus one style we’re ready to retire this week:

Down: Asymmetrical hemlines: Short in the front, long in the back dresses were everywhere this summer, but the breezy style just doesn’t feel right on a formal satin dress like Salma Hayek‘s. You can still wear high-low hemlines, just save them for a more casual setting.

Kate Hudson Isn’t Afraid to Admit She Wore These Shoes

Few boots are more controversial than Uggs. Some people love them and wear them proudly, others can’t stand them, and some of us wear them out hoping we won’t be seen by anyone we know. Kate Hudson falls into the first category — and what’s more, she might be responsible for kicking off the now-ubiquitous trend.

Turns out Hudson was wearing the Australian boots long before they were popular. “I had Uggs at, like, 11,” the actress reveals in the latest episode of Harper’s Bazaar’s The Look. “They were my mother’s Uggs and I stole them from her.” She goes on to explain that back in the day, the sheepskin kicks were the norm for kids in Malibu. And it makes sense considering that the shoes were originally sold just in SoCal — and were first worn by surfers who slipped them on after a day of hitting the waves.

But remember, this was back in simpler times, before the dawn of embellished, blinged-out Uggs. “No sequins,” Hudson says of her pair. And she clearly doesn’t regret her fashion choice — the actress is still often spotted in the comfy boots. (Though she prefers skyscraper stilettos over anything, any day. “I love heels,” she says inside the issue. “I’m not a big flats person.”)

But her childhood wardrobe also included a slightly more glam item: a Dior dress, which Hudson wore nonstop as a preschooler. The magazine’s October cover girl says, “[My mom] went to Paris and came back with this pink little Dior dress. All I knew was that it spun — and it spun so you could see your undies underneath. I must have worn that until I was about 5. Every picture of me as toddler is in that dress.”

Check Out Kate Hudson’s Revealing Rear View

Whoa, mama! Kate Hudson looked absolutely stunning in an Atelier Versace creation at the Venice Film Festival Wednesday night, but what was even more eye-catching than the front of the dress was the rear.

It was hard not to notice that Hudson’s, uh, derrière, was visible through the loose stitching on the back of the glimmering gown. And if she’d bent over? Seriously, we’d be seeing everything.

Now if anyone can pull this kind of thing off, it is Hudson; her body is insane and she has the easygoing personality to make it work. But with so many sexy flashes of skin elsewhere on this dress — across her back, tummy, chest and legs — it seems this bit of butt could be overkill. What do you think? Vote in our poll below!

Kate Hudson Confesses: I Had Big, Wavy Bangs

Kate Hudson is admittedly a makeup pro, but hair styling is a different story.

“I’m really not very good at it,” she tells PEOPLE. “In the ’80s I did the bangs — in a lot of my pictures from when I was little I have the big, hairsprayed, wavy bangs. I have a feeling that the little girls these days are going to look back at their pictures and have perfect, wavy, natural beach hair. But I had those bangs.”

Thankfully, she won’t look back on any makeup mishaps. “I like doing my own makeup,” she says. “I find it to be a really creative process.”

How Kate Hudson’s Love Affair with Makeup Began

Growing up, Kate Hudson had the perfect playmate to test makeup on: her brother. “My poor brother,” she recalls to PEOPLE. “He was kind enough to be my mannequin, and let me experiment on his face. I’d put blue eye shadow on him and we’d laugh.”

But much of Hudson’s makeup experience came from a more professional setting — namely, mom Goldie Hawn’s movie sets. “I remember my mom’s makeup artist, this wonderful, old-time sort of legend in the movie industry, Tom Case, who had one little box he’d carry with him,” she recalls. “He’d pull out just four items, and make the most incredible face with those four things.”

Hudson would play with Case’s products — “He said, ‘You can go in there as much as you want, but you have to put everything back exactly where you found it,’” she recalls — and a love of makeup was born.

Now, the actress (and face of Almay cosmetics) often does her own makeup for premieres and events — and even helps out her pals. “I love putting makeup on friends,” she shares. “I do it all the time. If I’m bringing them to a premiere, or we’re having a party, they’ll all come over early and I’ll do their makeup. I love it.”
