Red Carpet Trend Report: Bright Ideas, Modest Necklines and Giving ‘Bridesmaid-y’ Shoes the Boot

This week, stars tried all sorts of fun things on the red carpet — but they almost unanimously left one shoe style in the dust.

Up: Mixing Brights. Yes, Gwyneth Paltrow‘s grape Victoria Beckham mini is adorable on its own, but pairing it with those tangerine Michael Kors sandals elevates the look infinitely. This is a much easier way to try the ongoing mix-and-match trend than, say, mixing prints — but though the difficulty factor is low, the impact is still just as high (see: Emmy Rossum here). Try this with unexpected color pairings, like lemon and lime, magenta and cobalt or emerald and violet.

Saturday night: We’ve shown you lots of drop-dead sexy looks for a night on the town, but sometimes date night is just you, your guy and a giant box of Junior Mints at the movies. If you’re heading to the multiplex, might we suggest this comfy look Julianne Hough recently wore? Her Madewell jeans (on sale for $74.99), Matt Bernson wedges and black tee (like this $32 Alternative Apparel one) are casual, but the plunging neckline and sassy moto jacket more than spice up the casual ensemble.

From Date Night to Brunch: Weekend Wardrobe Inspiration

Feb/15/2013 at 04:00 PM ET

To ensure your three days off (!) are ultra-stylish, we found you a sexy look for date night courtesy of a Sports Illustrated model, a casual Sunday brunch getup inspired by Julianne Hough and a cute (but comfy) ensemble for you to slip into if you decide to wear something other than sweats all day Monday.

Saturday night: Skintight minis are sexy, but expected (and sometimes require the help of Spanx). If you’d rather not go the shapewear route, take a cue from Kate Upton‘s all-black look. Very Sandy from Grease, right? She adds glam pops of red to her skinnies, top and moto jacket (we found a topper like it for $70.16) with a pair of pointy-toe heels (love this Vince Camuto pair), a classic mani and bold lips.

Tabatha’s Takeover: Julianne Hough’s Latest Look Is Not for Everybody

We all know Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s sharp-tongued Aussie style pro, from her stint on Shear Genius and her latest hit, Tabatha Takes Over. And now, she’s bringing her talents online, joining us at PEOPLE StyleWatch once weekly to dish on some of the best – and worst – celebrity looks of the week. Keep in mind the opinions below belong solely to the stylist … though she’s probably saying what lots of you are thinking, anyway!

Today, she takes on Julianne Hough, who took a risk in a Georges Hobeika Couture dress over cropped pants at the Safe Haven premiere in N.Y.C. this week:

Julianne Hough, I have to say, I like you. I think you are a classy breath of fresh air. On the red carpet you always remain cool and composed, and during interviews you are natural and refreshing.

Let’s start with your hair: I love the color! The natural buttercream lowlights paired with cool, icy, platinum highlights is so on trend. You’re also a little rooty and I love it. As far as your makeup goes, bravo! Love that subtle pop of color on your lips and the cat eye whisps are alluring, yet not overdone.

Style Rx: Julianne Hough’s Almost-There Outfit

Jan/22/2013 at 06:00 PM ET

Julianne Hough Outfits O’Neill/White/INF

Who: Julianne Hough

Where: A visit to Toronto’s Much Music studios to promote her film Safe Haven

Diagnosis: We love Hough’s fun approach to fashion, but it’s time to get serious about her ongoing string of not-quite-there outfits. The ensemble at left suffers from overstyling, identity confusion and stumpifying booties.

Prescription: Keep the Ann Taylor jacket but ditch the prissy lace-collared blouse for a less fussy sheer white tee. We get where you were going with the Asos shorts, but think this sleek print pencil skirt would look way more chic and flattering. Then take two classic black pumps and call us in the morning.

Tell us: How would you cure Julianne Hough’s ensemble?

Best in Show: Four People’s Choice Awards Makeup Looks We Loved

Jan/10/2013 at 11:00 AM ET

Sure, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston won big, but who looked best at the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday? Now that the trophies have been distributed, we give you our best in beauty awards from last night …

Katy Perry

Best makeunder: Katy Perry. In a departure from all those blues, pinks and purples Perry usually sports, makeup artist Todd Delano used “rich, earthy tones” on his Valentino-clad client, he tells PEOPLE. After priming and prepping her skin with Koh Gen Do powder, he added Kevyn Aucoin “Dolline” blush to the apples of her cheeks, buffing Nars “Luster” over it “for an apricot glow,” he explains. “I like to start with a matte blush and add shimmer second.” For eyes, Delano chose Nars “Sophia” shadow — a warm chocolate color — and added dimension on the corners with “Embark” shadow from M.A.C. A little gel liner and white pencil defined and opened up the eyes, and “Whirl” liner and “Syrup” lipstick by M.A.C. completed the big winner’s low-key look.

What to Wear to Work Tomorrow

Jan/06/2013 at 04:00 PM ET

Julianne Hough Splash News Online

You know that grandma sweater you live in on your days off? Well, thanks to Julianne Hough, your go-to topper can now be office-appropriate.

The star transforms a sweater that wouldn’t typically be sophisticated enough for the office by pairing it with dressier pieces.

PHOTOS: SHOP MORE STAR STYLE — FOR LESS!

She layers the patterned sweater with a billowy black blouse (like this one from Topshop for $76), mustard yellow jeans (J.Crew has a pair on sale for just $39.99) and some cool lace-up ankle boots (we love these from Ralph Lauren on sale for $63.74).

If you’re not crazy about colored pants, the ensemble would look just as cool with a tailored pair of jeans.

Two things that you probably can’t get away with wearing during your Monday morning meeting? Hough’s black brimmed hat and circular sunnies, but we do recommend donning them on your way into work. Tell us: Do you like Hough’s outfit?
