Jessica Simpson has turned her eponymous clothing and accessories line into a billion-dollar brand, so it’s no wonder that the singer-turned-businesswoman was asked to appear at the Forbes Women’s Summit in N.Y.C. Thursday to be interviewed by none other than Steve Forbes himself. Wearing a dress and cuffs from her own Jessica Simpson Collection, the star discussed why her fashion line has become such a hit where others have fizzled out.
“I think my brand has surpassed my name and my celebrity,” Simpson said of her line, which has grown to include footwear, juniors’ and plus size. The trick to making things that appeal to a wide variety of customers — and not just her fan base? “I think I understand women. I’ve been every size on the planet, and I think beyond New York and LA.”
She expanded on the “every size on the planet” line by addressing her very public weight loss journey as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman. “I fluctuate, I’m a woman,” she said, according to WWD. “I feel like we all need to enjoy life. If I’m five pounds heavier or 50 pounds heavier or five pounds lighter, I don’t think that should define who you are.”
And though she’s currently at her goal weight, she doesn’t put too much stock in the number no the scale, living by two common-sense mantras: “Tune out the world and tune into you” and “I don’t let others define me for me,” she said in the interview.
Ultimately, the bride-to-be has one goal in her fashion line: “I want to make every woman confident in what they’re wearing.” Do you shop Simpson’s clothes? Do you believe in her body-positive mantras? Sound off in the comments!
