We obviously love fashion, but the shows thrown our way — Project Runway, 24 Hour Catwalk, The Fashion Show – can sometimes leave our heads spinning (and our DVRs overfilled!). So why should we watch the upcoming NBC show Fashion Star? What makes the series — hosted by Elle MacPherson and featuring mentors Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson and John Varvatos — that different than the rest?

“What makes the show so original is as America is watching the clothes go down the runway, they can order those clothes immediately online that night or go in the stores the next day and buy it,” Richie explains to FabSugar. “We’re talking about immediate fashion, accessible fashion, at an accessible price.”

Richie says she and her co-mentors — all heads of successful fashion lines — will err on the side of friendliness when critiquing the competing designers, too. “We are really leaving our personal opinions to ourselves,” she promises. “It’s about encouraging [the contestants] to go with their gut and know the business, and be fearless in the competition.” Reason enough to tune in? For sure!

Even though they’re grownups, Jessica and Ashlee Simpson still listen to their mom, Tina. Case in point: it was her idea to have them create a clothing line for young girls together.

“My mother thought it would be great to combine both of our styles, both of our personalities,” Jessica told Fashionista.com Thursday during a party for the line in New York. Though it’s the sisters’ first time working together, “it feels like we always work together,” Jessica said.

The line combines what Jessica calls “Ashlee’s rock ‘n’ roll, cool, boho-chic” aesthetic with her own “all-American girl” look. “I’m pretty classic, I’m pretty easy going,” she said. “Combining the two is always fun.”

And thankfully, working together caused zero tension for the superstars. “We loved being in the approval meetings together, we loved inspiration shopping together,” she shared. “It’s been fun. I feel like all these little girls are wearing stuff that Ashlee and I would both wear.”

From the sounds of it, Jessica is creating even more items she’d wear: the mom-to-be revealed that she’s currently working on a maternity line. “We’re looking into launching around February,” she said, “but we’ll see.”

Jessica Simpson may be one of the pros on NBC’s upcoming show Fashion Star, but she admits her own style choices haven’t always been the best.

“There are a lot of things I’ve worn and look back on and think, ‘Oh, my,’” the mom-to-be recently told PEOPLE. “When it comes to beauty, I think a big misconception is the tanner you are, the more beautiful you are. It’s not always true. I look back on a lot of pictures where I’m really tan, and I’m like, ‘Whoa!’”

But Simpson has only learned from her mistakes — and they’ve inspired her to strive to keep her Jessica Simpson line of shoes and apparel impeccable.

“I’m in all those meetings,” she said. “I know the zipper pulls, I know what you’re going to be purchasing next spring. I know what’s going to be trending. It’s really fun to take all those meetings and try and play great guessing games of what the public’s going to buy.”

Simpson, who said she’s a big fan of the current colorblocking trend, is also in the know when it comes to taking care of her skin. The former Proactiv spokeswoman recently teamed up with skincare expert Nerida Joy to introduce BeautyMint, an affordable, personalized line sold on the web.

“We go to department stores and we have no idea what these people are telling us,” Simpson said. “We just know to get the ‘it’ product because it’s working on this A-celebrity. It’s kind of like you’re spending too much money on something you don’t really know.”

The soon-to-be-married singer is embarking on her next business venture — a fine jewelry collection — focusing on every girl’s best friend: diamonds!

In October, the fashion mogul will introduce the Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend collection at Zales and Zales Outlets, making jewelry her 22nd retail category. 
”Jewelry is such personal expression of style and taste. This collection has allowed me to create pieces that truly reflect who I am, and that can become a keepsake for lifetime,” Simpson tells WWD. “The collection is beautifully crafted. The designs are airy and artistic and so easy to wear.”

Some of Simpson’s signature designs include a rose gold butterfly pendant bordered in diamonds (her favorite; above, $199), a diamond-studded white gold heart-shaped pendant based on her handwriting ($199) and sterling silver crosses with diamonds ($79.99).

She’s helped teens dress for prom, and now, she’ll be helping them dress for everyday life! Jessica Simpson is teaming up with little sis Ashlee to create a line of tween apparel as part of the Jessica Simpson Collection, according to WWD. The new products, available in stores in fall, will be geared to the fashion-forward tween and will feature sportswear, denim and activewear styled after Simpson’s “girly, playful attitude,” the trade mag reports. Knit tops, hoodies, pullovers, striped shrunken knits, graphic T-shirts, drawstring pants, footwear and outerwear will all be part of the collection, with both Jessica and Ashlee serving as co-creative directors for the line.
”Creating a tween apparel collection was a natural extension for the brand,” Jessica tells WWD. “I’m excited to bring my sister, Ashlee, along as co-creative director of this division, because she brings a savvy rocker edge that defines today’s tweens.”
Ashlee, who has always been a big supporter of her big sis’s empire, agrees. “My goal as co-creative director will be to design clothes that will help inspire young girls to express their personalities and creativity through fashion.” This marks the first time the sisters are collaborating on a fashion venture. The singer-turned-fashion-mogul popped up on The Oprah Winfrey Show this week, where she paid a visit to students at Father’s H.A.R.B.O.R. Academy in Jacksonville, Fla. The girls’ teacher had written to Winfrey, explaining that several of the students had been in and out of foster care and didn’t have the means to afford a prom look. Though she hasn’t set a date for her wedding to fiancé Eric Johnson — they might even elope! — Jessica Simpson has one big detail in mind: her dress. “I will be part of designing my own wedding gown,” the star, who wore a custom Vera Wang gown for her 2002 wedding to Nick Lachey, tells WWD. “But not without telling your mom,” interjects mother Tina. The mother-daughter pair shares everything, it seems, including ownership of Jessica’s billion-dollar fashion empire, which includes sportswear, prom dresses, denim, shoes and more. “I couldn’t do this without my mom. We have the same eye,” Jessica says. “[She's] been my stylist since I was born.” The two approve every item in the Jessica Simpson line, down to the button. “It’s a three-step process,” Tina explains. “We see it at the beginning design stage. We’ll give our inspiration and our color palette. And then, mid-design, they bring to us what they’re working on, and then we have final approval.” When Jessica is busy with other commitments in Los Angeles, it’s Tina who jets to New York to do the dirty work. “The biggest thing … is we just don’t walk in and put Jessica’s name on something and walk away,” she explains. For Jessica’s part, having her mom on board couldn’t be better. “We get along great,” she says. “I feel like we’ve grown up together. Having a young mom has inspired my style.” And though she names fashion houses like Lanvin, Alexander McQueen and Valentino among her favorites, she vows to never charge designer prices for her duds. “All this looks expensive, and it doesn’t fall apart,” Jessica shares. “I don’t think we need to go there. Jessica Simpson is fashion’s newest billion dollar baby — but did she mean to be? Simpson will continue growing her empire this year by adding a ready-to-wear collection and a line of career separates, which are expected to push sales for the company to over a billion dollars. “I never thought I’d be some fashion mogul!,” Simpson tells New York in the magazine’s spring fashion issue, where the cover girl rocks huge, teased hair and bare shoulders. To put that number in context, the magazine explains that Simpson’s company is doing roughly the same volume in sales as designers like Michael Kors. Simpson says that her brand is so popular because she makes the line for everyday women and keeps the focus away from herself. ”What you really need is your basics for every type of person,” she says. “When it comes to other celebrity brands, I think a lot of people do a great job, but it can’t be all about them. Everybody doesn’t want to just look like the celebrity, because they can’t.
