Jennifer Lopez‘s skin sure is glowing in her new fragrance ad — we know, because we can see it all. The sexy singer and American Idol judge strikes a daring pose — in the buff — for her new fragrance (her 18th!), Glowing.

“Glowing is such a clean fragrance,” she tells WWD of the scent, a follow-up to her first fragrance, Glow. “That’s what I’ve always been about. I like soapy, clean smells. This is a very woodsy scent. So it’s not exactly what I created 10 years ago — it’s the evolution of that.”

Describing Glowing as “earthy, clean and real,” Lopez says the fragrance is “kind of New York-y, darker and sexier.” It contains notes of cypress, orange flower, cassia flower, vanilla and cashmere musk, and as a special treat, the eau de parfum bottles light up for 15 seconds when spritzed. “We’re in the history making business, baby,” Lopez says, laughing.

Jokes aside, Lopez hopes that this is another fragrance that will last. “I always feel pressure to create a great fragrance — I always want it to be so special, this one especially because of Glow. We want it to be great, and I think it is.”

When it came to partnering with Coty to create the ultimate perfume, Roberto Cavalli was primed for the challenge.

“I was waiting a long time to have such a special fragrance,” he told PEOPLE recently. “I spent a lot of time to create something that I really like.”

Sitting low in his chair, and surrounded by lanky employees with thick Italian accents, the storied designer detailed whittling the scent down to three key ingredients. “At the beginning they gave me a lot of small bottles and I didn’t know which one to choose because one was too sweet and the other one was too …” he trailed off. Clearly, creating a fragrance is hard work.

Comprised of a trifecta of harmonious scents — orange flower, roasted Tonka bean and peppercorn for a spicy note — the eponymous scent was created as a tongue-in-cheek homage to the designer’s late mother.

“She adored perfume,” he said, his eyes glassing over with remembrance. “She used to buy the most horrible, cheap perfume. It was strong, strong perfume. I like mine because it is soft, delicate … not too much.”

So when asked which of his A-list fans would best embody his “sexy, feminine, aggressive” scent, Cavalli was quick to choose Jennifer Lopez. “It’s for a woman full of energy,” he mused. “I can see Jennifer singing and dancing with my perfume. I would love that.”

Jennifer Lopez‘s line for Kohl’s hit stores last month, but the singer-actress is hardly taking a break from designing.

“We’re done all the way through January,” she tells PEOPLE. “But I was just working on spring.”

The collection, which features women’s clothing, accessories, home goods and more, is a project close to the star’s heart. “With this line, I did the line I’ve always wanted to do — and one that everybody could afford,” she explains. Her biggest challenge? “Getting the fit right is something that takes a lot of time, but it’s something that we can’t compromise. For me, the stuff I pick is the stuff that fits really well. So we concentrate on giving beautiful items with great fit at a great price.”

Lopez says she was involved in the creation of her first delivery from start to finish, pulling tearsheets from books and magazines, approving sketches and putting color palettes together. “For spring, we have a lot of bright colors,” she reveals. “We started off with the more signature ‘Jennifer Lopez’ palate — soft grays, whites, seafoam greens in the bedding and home collection — then in accessories and apparel, we did the more blush and soft tones, camel, cream. Going forward we’ll start experimenting with more colors.”

In the future, Lopez hopes to expand her collection, possibly adding kids’ clothes and definitely debuting more home goods. “We talked about dishes and plates — there are all different areas you can expand into,” she says. “But we wanted to first focus on delivering a great, quality line that was luxurious, beautiful and sexy — and affordable.”

For Lopez, who says she’s been wearing “just about everything” from the line, that means more opportunities to express herself through her design work. “I always wanted to be a signer, performer, an actress … and I knew I was creative in other ways,” she says, when asked if she always wanted to design. “I love fashion, but I never really thought I wanted to become a fashion designer. That just kind of evolved with my image, my style and the fact that I am creative. So when I was given the opportunity to do this line, I realized I had something to say, and something to offer.”

This fall, you’ll find Jennifer Lopez “On the Floor” — the sales floor, that is. The American Idol judge is preparing for the upcoming launch of her Kohl’s line, Jennifer Lopez Collection, and sharing a sneak peek in the behind-the-scenes clip above.

“I’m really a fan of glamour and old Hollywood and movie stars so I wanted to bring all of those elements of my style into this first collection for Kohl’s,” Lopez says of the line, which includes contemporary sportswear, dresses, handbags, jewelry, shoes and sleepwear. In addition to clothing, she will also be launching the Jennifer Lopez Home Collection, featuring bedding, towels and luggage. As for how she fell into the world of style, she says it all stems from her past.

“I think my personal style has evolved from where I started from, being born in the Bronx and growing up with that kind of urban background,” says the singer, who recently styled some everyday women for O Magazine. When eight “real” models showed up at a New York City studio for an O, The Oprah Magazine photo shoot, they had no idea what was in store. But as it turned out, creative director Adam Glassman had arranged a styling session and photo shoot with none other than Jennifer Lopez, featuring clothes from her upcoming collection for Kohl’s.

“O is often the go-to magazine for lines that want to do an exclusive first look,” Glassman tells PEOPLE. “It’s so great to have her teach women how to get a kind of everyday glamour like hers.” Lopez served as a guest fashion editor on the shoot, which appears in the magazine’s September issue, choosing outfits and accessories for all eight women.

“Jennifer is very approachable right from the start, so they got comfortable with her right away,” Glassman says. And for Lopez, newly single, that’s important. “I’m a mom,” she tells O. “I work. I want comfort. But I want to feel sexy and modern. I think most women want the same things.”

Lopez, who also wears looks from her Kohl’s collection in the spread, gave all of the models tips on posing for the camera, and even directed hair and makeup. And though she’s a true style icon, she was humbled by the praise she received from everyone on set that day.

“This is the fulfilling part,” she says. “To have women tell me, ‘This is so comfortable, it fits so well.’” But Glassman says it’s not surprising everyone loved her designs. “These clothes look fantastic … they really give the essence of what her style is about,” he shares. Since announcing her split from husband Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez has stepped out several times looking super-sexy — and on each occasion, she’s been wearing Emilio Pucci. Shortly before sharing her shocking separation news, the American Idol judge chatted up the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in a revealing emerald Pucci gown at the July 9 BAFTA gala in L.A. Women that were pioneers in fashion and fragrance,” she tells StyleList.com about the force behind her 17th fragrance, Love & Light (which sold 51,000 units on HSN last weekend). “The Love & Light ad is a tribute to legends like Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Onassis and of course, Coco Chanel. We wanted to capture that chic Hollywood glamour and spirit.” But Hollywood’s former leading ladies aren’t the only figures of the past that drive the diva: she also gets nostalgic thinking of a particular scent from her childhood. “I remember when I was a little girl, my mom had this very special smell, that was unique to my mom. I loved that!” she shares. Her early years also influenced her perfume dreams: she tells StyleList that she worked in a perfume store as a teen. “This has been a passion of mine … so it’s a dream come true,” she says. “I never imagined when I launched Glow that fragrance would become such a big part of my life. Each fragrance is a reflection of what I am feeling in my life at that time.” But with every creation comes a bit of a learning curve, even for perfume pro Lopez. So what’s the biggest lesson she’s learned along the fragrance-making path? “Patience,” she says. “I never simply put my name on something. PEOPLE’s Most Beautiful Woman recently got extra-glamorous for the campaign — and we have a sneak peek! In these behind-the-scenes shots, Lopez flashes her famous gams, posing seductively in a silk wrap dress. But while the photos are all about beauty, Lopez says the fragrance is about channeling what’s inside. “With Love & Light, I wanted to create a fragrance that was less about the world around you and more about your inner light and your spirit,” she explains in a release. “It’s about how you feel inside, it’s not about your outside world.” Betsy Olum, general manager of beauty and merchandising strategy at HSN, says Lopez’s upcoming appearance will make the scent “simply come alive. It’s a true reflection of who she is,” she shares. “We know our audience is going to love hearing from her on what influenced the creation of this fragrance.” After debuting on HSN, Love & Light will be available at Kohl’s and in department stores in September. A star of many trades, PEOPLE’s Most Beautiful Woman and also a style mogul, Lopez will be on air for eight hours, answering viewer questions and revealing intimate details on her latest fragrance, global beauty brand, successful career and enviable life. Love & Light, her 17th scent, is a “sparkling floral, woody fragrance,” reports WWD. Made to express the American Idol judge’s softer, more sensual side, it comes in a bottle inspired by womanly curves, topped with a jewel-like cap. Wardrobe designers Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn say the fashion plate knows her Prabal from her Prada. “She’s been in this industry a long time,” Zangardi tells WWD when asked about the duo’s “most informed” client. “It comes with experience.” And Lopez’s discerning support serves as a boon to the industry. “On American Idol recently [she] wore an asymmetric fuchsia Valentino top that we were told sold out the next days,” he says. However, Lopez may want to weigh her options before getting in the styling biz. Jennifer Lopez may love being makeup-free at home with her twins, but for her flawless appearance as PEOPLE’s 2011 World’s Most Beautiful cover girl, she had a little help from her glam squad. Makeup artist Mary Phillips began with moisturizer, then applied foundation with a blush brush “all over her face and neck, including on her eyelids.” She followed that with peach cream blush, “beginning on the apple using less product as you go back.” She set the look with a yellow-based powder. Phillips lined Lopez’s eyes in brown, “rimming the whole eye, all the way around.” After applying creamy shadow with a hint of shimmer all over the lid with a touch of espresso color in the crease, she curled Lopez’s lashes and used mascara on both the top and bottom lashes. On her lips, a nude pink lip liner was topped with a peach lipstick followed by clear gloss. As for her famously lush locks, stylist Lorenzo Martin started with freshly shampooed hair, applied a styling serum and blew it dry “with lots of volume, toward the back.” Then he curled big sections with a 2-in. curling iron, pinned them back, and set them with hairspray. After 20 minutes, he pulled the pins out, and, he says, “put her hair upside down and brushed it with a boar-bristle brush. The American Idol judge rocks a variety of ethnic gear accentuated by the sparkling jewels — not to mention some seriously sensual poses — in these exclusive photos, part of a series she recently shot for the 90-year-old Spanish company. Lopez was announced as the new face of Tous last month, chosen for her genuineness and charisma, according to the line’s president, Salvador Tous. “[She's] a great illustration of our brand.” (Kylie Minogue previously modeled for the company.) The singer-actress obviously had a lot of fun in her new role, too; some outtakes depict a beaming Lopez with her arm around Madame Tous, who helps design the gems. As a judge on American Idol, Jennifer Lopez has impressed us this season with her ear for talent — and her gorgeous skin and makeup. How does she manage to look so good, in high definition, no less? For starters, she sticks with the bare essentials. “I’m a big believer in the basics. Less is more,” she tells Allure. “I use a very mild makeup remover and a very basic sunscreen-moisturizer combo, and I try to get lots of sleep.” And even though she’s attempted some questionable beauty trends in the past, she doesn’t regret any of them. “I stand by all my awful looks,” she says, laughing. While Lopez spends a decent amount of time getting dolled up for the red carpet, where she says she feels most beautiful, she explains that it’s important to remember that beauty comes from within — a mantra that she plans to pass on to her daughter, Emme, 3. “You can be the most physically beautiful girl, but if you’re not a beautiful person, that shows,” she says. “So I really do teach her to love herself and to know that beauty is something that comes from the inside.” That likely applies to her signature skin look, then, which has been touted the ‘J. The singer, actress and American Idol judge is adding another bullet point to her résumé: she’s the new face of Barcelona-based Tous jewelry. The line’s president Salvador Tous (daughter Rosa is the designer) said in statement that the diva was a natural choice to front the line’s spring ad campaigns, to be shot by photographer Ellen Von Unwerth, because Lopez “is genuine and endlessly charismatic; a great illustration of our brand.” For Lopez, who has long been known to have a thing for bling, the choice to collaborate with the 90-year-old jewelry brand was a no-brainer, she said. “All girls love diamonds!” –Alex Apatoff
