Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Jennifer Hudson May Have Skipped the Grammys - But They Still Brought the Style This Weekend

Did the Grammys red carpet seem a little … understated to you? Even reliably wacky dressers like Katy Perry kept things low key — and the stars we can count on to bring the drama, like Lady Gaga and Kanye West, skipped the evening altogether. Fortunately the whole weekend wasn’t devoid of dramatic dress moments. Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Jennifer Hudson all attended pre-Grammys parties in discussion-worthy outfits, and we’re bringing them to you now to round out your Grammys style experience.
By now, Jennifer Hudson is a Grammy Awards red carpet fixture, but the singer’s favorite red carpet memories are from her early years at the music awards show. And there’s one dress in particular that she still loves to reminisce about.
“It was a red dress that I wore to my first Grammys [in 2007],” she told PEOPLE. “It was a very body-conscious dress, and it kind of had a fishtail at the end. I don’t remember the material, but I loved it so much. And that was in my bigger days and I loved it. You couldn’t tell me nothin’.”
The star’s Roberto Cavalli stunner, worn before her very public slimdown with Weight Watchers, definitely put her killer curves on display, and we love that she played up the look with fun gold accessories and simple hair. We also think Hudson’s a fabulous role model for loving the way you look and dressing for your shape at any size.
Jennifer Hudson always brings her “A” game to the red carpet. But her recent decision to chop her hair into an on-trend pixie has added a whole new element to her style experience. If you ask her, the singer is still trying to find her “short hair swag.”
“I’m busy swiping out my entire wardrobe now,” Hudson told PEOPLE. “The hair change is almost as drastic as my weight loss! It feels the exact same way. Shorter hair makes me look taller, so I’m still trying to figure that out. I was just on Shopbop last night, and I want clothes that will elongate my body. If you are gonna wear a different style, you have to wear it. You can’t let it wear you.”
One pixie-inspired move she made right after the cut was adding some new bling to her ears. “I just got my ears pierced at the top too. It’s more about the profile than anything for me and elongating myself even more. I’m trying to find things to complement that. For me, short hair is all about presence. You have to have presence.”

We love a good Fashion Faceoff here at PEOPLE StyleWatch — and we get extra-enthusiastic when two stars are spotted out in the same distinctive dress on the same day. The stars involved may be less excited than we are about this fun coincidence, but since these two were separated by 2,000 miles, we think they won’t mind too much if we discuss dress details.

This week’s race for Best Dressed was a neck-and-neck black-and-white faceoff (we told you the color combo is really big right now), with the top three falling within a 500-vote difference at press time.
Reigning supreme was Jennifer Hudson, who proved you don’t have to wear a single pop of color to stand out on the red carpet. Her white Yigal Azrouel dress, accessorized with black pumps at the Power of Women event, was the very definition of figure-flaunting, and her fresh take on the peplum is likely what set her apart from the rest of the competition. And okay, we lied. She sported just the right hit of color via her wine-colored pout.
Giving Jennifer a run for her money was Charlize Theron, who also brought her LWD out for a spin at the Power of Women event (hers was a draped Stella McCartney mini with what we’re dubbing the “cutout turtleneck”). And Sandra Bullock rounded out the top three in a black strapless Antonio Berardi dress with white side panels at the USC Shoah Foundation Institute gala. And if you think that look is worthy of Best Dressed, you should see her other black-and-white number at the London premiere of Gravity (it’s our personal favorite of her press tour so far!).
So clearly black-and-white is back in a major way — and getting some serious love from readers. Did you like Jennifer’s take on the trend, or do you prefer Charlize or Sandra’s style? Or are you dying for some pops of color to make their way back to the red carpet?
