The women of Mad Men know a thing or two about retro beauty — having seen the looks change from the refined elegance of the early ’60s to the bold, bright mod colors from later that decade. (And we’ll have lots more on that from the show’s makeup artist next week, so stay tuned!) But for the premiere of the show’s final season, three of the show’s leading ladies — from left, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss and Jessica Paré — went for mostly modern looks that were a major departure from their characters. And all three were discussion-worthy, so put on your gogo boots, pull up your wicker peacock chair and let’s chat.

January Jones may play the epitome of the 1950s ice queen on Mad Men, but in real life she’s not afraid to be provocative. “I try to take risks and shock people a little bit,” she says in the latest edition of Violet Grey. “It’s important to provoke some sort of emotion, negative or positive.”

While it’s true that all the bright gowns on the Emmys red carpet Sunday night certainly turned our heads, it was a much subtler shade that ended up being the most-loved dress color of the evening. Call it petal, shell, blush or rose, this hue was worn by many of our favorite stars — including a few we couldn’t even fit in the photo!

January Jones has a new ‘do for summer.

The Mad Men star was photographed this week with freshly trimmed tresses and wispy bangs while out with son Xander in L.A.

Back in January, the actress proclaimed her hair was falling out in clumps due to the constant dye jobs, but it looks like she found a new way to switch up her look without damaging her strands.

We think the banging bob is fresh and fun on the actress, but we want to know what your take on her haircut is: Do you like January’s new style?

Met Gala 2013: Three Beauty Looks We've Still Got to Discuss

We’ve talked fauxhawks. We’ve talked smoky eyes. But we have not yet discussed these three major beauty moments, and it’s about time.

First up: January Jones’s straight-up Black Swan makeup look. From the bleached eyebrows to the dramatic black liner, we hardly recognized our dear Betty Draper — and we kinda liked it. It was bold and brazen, but was it a hit?

Also on the daring end of the eyeshadow spectrum, Emily Blunt opted for a bold wash of fuschia shadow that totally played against the conservative vibe of her Carolina Herrera gown. Between that and her fierce Lorraine Schwartz danglers, she embodied the phrase “if looks could kill.” To get the sizzling pink, NARS makeup artist Jenn Streicher got creative, using the line’s “Jardin des Plantes” satin lip pencil topped with Desire powder blush.

And finally, Elizabeth Banks’s long, clipped-up ponytail, which didn’t quite qualify for our fauxhawk roundup, but it was head-turning nonetheless.

Tell us: Whose look did you like most: Jones’s, Blunt’s or Banks’s? Would you try any in your everyday life?

–Alex Apatoff
