Gwen Stefani is one of the few celebrities who can pull off just about any look. Peep-toe booties at the grocery store? Sure! Head-to-toe plaid? Totally!

But one of the singer’s recent looks had us a bit stuck. At the Hollywood premiere of Angelina Jolie‘s In the Land of Blood and Honey last month, Stefani showed up wearing a grommet-adorned jumper, stacked wedges and a front bun.

We worship the ground the No Doubt singer walks on, but we’re not sure we can really get on board with the jumpsuit — perhaps a bit more reminiscent of skydiving gear than high style.

Gwen Stefani admits it: It’s not easy to look like her.

“The makeup goes on every day,” she confesses in the November issue of InStyle. “Even if I’m not going anywhere.”

The Old Hollywood look is inspired by a mix of muses including Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe — “I do my roots as often as [she] did hers” — as well as figuring out what worked at an early age. “When I was 17, my grandmother got me a gift pack with all these different colored lipsticks, and one of them was burgundy,” she tells the mag. “I tried it on and looked in the rear-view mirror and said, ‘That looks good.’ I’ve worn it ever since.”

Being married to a rock star is an added incentive; she often dresses to impress hubby Gavin Rossdale. “It was like my own runway. I thought, ‘You are being such an idiot!’” she admits of trying on five outfits before leaving the house for a date. Apparently, Rossdale is a hard act to follow: “He looks good in everything.”

Perhaps Stefani’s creative indecisiveness has trickled down to her two sons, who are fashion plates in their own right. “I like them to be creative and have fun,” she says of 5-year-old Kingston and 3-year-old Zuma. “Sometimes they’ll get dressed and it’s horrifying. But they often come out in outfits that are awesome.”

Gwen Stefani stepped out earlier this month in the black lace top ($45), which 90210 star Jessica Stroup dressed up for an event over the summer. Giuliana Rancic wore the same blouse in gold for a taping of E! News, too.

Emmy Rossum took her love of lace up a notch, sporting the black knit grace lace dress ($150) on a movie set in Los Angeles. Jaime King rocked the look, too, wearing it in white to a party at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont.

Mom-to-be Hilary Duff is even in on the action; she carried the grey animal-print cardigan ($89.50) while vacationing in Brazil in September. They may not be heading to an advertising office, but we think these ladies sure look slick in their Mad Men-inspired styles. SHOP BACK-TO-SCHOOL STAR STYLE

Gwen Stefani‘s style is no longer just for grown-ups. The successful designer — and No Doubt frontwoman — announced today that she’s partnering with Target to create Harajuku Mini, an affordable, two-installment collection for babies, children and tweens. The line will first debut in Target stores and on target.com on Nov. 13, with a second delivery in January. Prices will range from $3.99 to $29.99. “Harajuku Mini is a dream come true,” Stefani told WWD. “I’ve always wanted to do a cool children’s fashion line inspired by the supercute and playful kid’s clothing you find in Japan.” Stefani, herself a mom of two young boys, knows her customer well, and says the whole idea of the line “is about being creative, expressing your own individuality and having fun getting dressed.” This marks the first time the designer, who’s had success with her L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers lines, has created clothes for babies and boys. “Target has given me the creative freedom to design kid’s clothing that is different than most anything you usually see out there with great quality, attention to detail and most of all, available at amazing prices,” Stefani said. Her collection follows recent collaborations between Target and brands like Calypso St. Barth, Petit Tresor and coming soon, Missoni.

Growing up in Anaheim, Calif., Gwen Stefani always found fashion elusive. “It was something I couldn’t touch,” she reveals in a recent interview with Stylist magazine. “I’d never even look in fashion magazines because for me, that was just a stuck-up world.” Fast forward a couple decades, and the 41-year-old is a brand ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, helms a venerable fashion empire and rocks a practically-trademarked look. “It never gets old,” she says of signature crimson lips and platinum locks, which she touches up bi-weekly, “I could do it all day long — I’ve been doing it since I was a little girl.” But much like longevity, identity is easily compromised in Hollywood. “When you start out being on covers of magazines, there’s so much politics,” she explains. “You’re like, ‘Wait, I don’t wear lavender, that’s not what I do.’ That’s the fun thing about success: the freedom you get and people learning to trust you and being inspired by you.” –Justine Harman

Along with her self-admitted vanity (“I love the visual,” she explains), the key to her trademark looks lies in her get-noticed choices. “Vivienne Westwood is one of my all-time favorite designers,” the stylista says to WhoWhatWear, referencing a raw-hemmed plaid jumper (above) from the label’s spring collection. Of celeb-adored Persol shades, Stefani is partial to vintage versions of their timeless frames. And to add a punky punch to any outfit, she recommends a finishing touch from Noir, like their $285 Bugle Bead Collar necklace (above). And of course, edgy accessories from her L.A.M.B. collection always fit the bill. She may have designed her line L.A.M.B. just for herself, but Gwen Stefani was willing to share her wardrobe with the ladies of American Idol this week when she dressed them for Wednesday’s show. Thursday night, Idol took us backstage to the fitting session — every girl’s dream! — where Stefani helped choose outfits for the budding superstars. Admitting that she was not a stylist — and even a bit nervous! – the No Doubt rocker first pulled pants and a jacket “literally out of my closet” for contestant Hailey Reinhart. She ended up choosing a different outfit, though: a checkered linen tabard top and leather pants. Pia Toscano, who was sent home Thursday night, rocked a “tribal” animal-print jumpsuit and layered on some accessories. And 16-year-old Lauren Alaina, the show’s youngest star, skipped a look she found too “biker” and opted for gingham shorts and a matching top, covered up with a black blazer — the first look Stefani pulled. “That’s totally something I would wear, for real,” she said. The designer explained that she wanted her clothes to give the girls a confidence boost on stage: “What you’re wearing is the last thing you want to think of.” Tell us: What did you think of Stefani’s picks?

WEIGH IN ON MORE STAR STYLE IN ‘LAST NIGHT’S LOOK: HIT OR MISS?’

We’ve always loved Gwen Stefani‘s immaculate makeup: the signature bright red lips, those luscious long lashes. So it’s no surprise to hear that the singing star learned the tricks of the trade at a young age. “I started in seventh grade,” Stefani shares in the latest issue of ELLE. “We had home economics, and they’d bring someone in to show you how to put your makeup on.” And her studies in cosmetology continued through college, where she majored in art. “I can draw and paint. That’s my background,” she explains. When touring solo, or with her No Doubt bandmates, the L’Oreal Paris spokesmodel does all her own stage makeup. “I learn from makeup people now, but in the past I had a real problem with makeup artists,” Stefani admits. “I remember my first experience with a makeup artist was doing the first No Doubt album, the one that was shelved. Go back and look at how ugly I look. It is the worst makeup … From that time on, I’m thinking, I’m not going to let someone do my makeup, because they don’t know how to do it.” She’s happy to let hair stylists work their magic, though. “For the last couple tours I’ve had hair people, which is the luxury of my life,” she says. “I’m like, ‘Why did I do it myself this whole time?’” And in an industry where looks mean everything, Stefani isn’t ashamed to admit she cares about her ultra-glam outward appearance. “I mean, I’m very vain. That would be my middle name,” she says. “Of course I am, you know what I mean? Designers often launch clothing collections to share some kind of message with the world, but not Gwen Stefani. The star tells CNN that the idea to create clothes didn’t come from a desire to share her style; it was actually for personal gratification. “For me the line is genuinely for myself,” she says. “I want to make a line of clothes that I want to wear — it’s kind of selfish. ” Though the star admits she lacks the technical qualifications to design solo — “I’m not going to ever be a Vivienne Westwood … I just have a vibe of what I like,” she says — she did grow up watching her mom and grandmother make clothes. “Every holiday we would go to TJY, a little fabric store, and look at patterns and pick out our outfits,” Stefani recalls. When she started with No Doubt at age 17, she says she’d “waste all [her] time at school thinking about [fashion] and drive to the fabric store and just find stuff.” Using Velcro and glue guns, she’d make her stage outfits work. From that point on, her music inspired her looks — and it also inspired her to launch L.A.M.B., in a backwards way. “Nine or 10 years ago, I didn’t know how long I would be doing music,” the 41-year-old admits. “[People] ask you, ‘What are you going to be doing in 10 years?’ and I didn’t know. Most women’s wedding dresses end up in an attic, or perhaps tucked under a bed — but Gwen Stefani is not your typical bride. The singer and fashion designer tells Elle U.K. that her one-of-a-kind Christian Dior gown, created by embattled designer John Galliano, is heading to a permanent home in the Victoria and Albert Design Museum in London. “I didn’t wanna send it because I was scared it would get ruined. But it’s a work of art, it needed to be seen,” she tells the magazine. Stefani, who married rocker Gavin Rossdale in London in 2002, says Galliano made her wedding day dreams come true. “When I got engaged and someone told me that John said he would make my dress, I was like really?” she recalls. “I said I wanted it to be over the top, but not traditional — I wanted it to be everything. But how do you tell this genius over the phone?” Luckily, the designer listened to her wishes. “He was, like, OK, and sent me these drawings of this unbelievable, perfect dress.” –Kim Peiffer

Forget the rehearsals — when fashion is in your blood like Kingston Rossdale, you just hit the runway! “He ran out, she had to catch him,” a source told PEOPLE after the L.A.M.B. fashion show ended with a runway appearance by designer Gwen Stefani with her son Kingston at her side, wearing wee, modified army pants. But it’s no real surprise that the 4-year-old was psyched for the Thursday show (part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) itself. “They’re good, they’re here, they’re excited,” Stefani said of sons Kingston and Zuma before the show. “They’re pumped up. They’ve been building it up, ‘Fashion show! Fashion Show!’” And is her brood of two boys into fashion? “They are actually,” said the designer. “By force . . . I force them to be dressed up all the time.” As for the show itself, the designer explained “we decided to divide the collection up into categories. A ragamuffin girl, glamour girl, a mod, and soldier girl. Looks like Gwen Stefani really took her song “Don’t Speak” to heart on Wednesday. Or was that the wax figurine of her exact likeness that didn’t speak? It may be a little more difficult to tell who the real No Doubt singer is and who has been immortalized in wax. Stefani, 40, was in Las Vegas Wednesday as her body double was unveiled at the Venetian hotel’s Madame Tussauds. And when the curtain dropped revealing a midriff-baring Stefani to the real Stefani, the songstress said, “That is so me.” For several minutes the mother-of-two stood in awe at her wax statue, touching its abs, staring into the eyes and putting her arm around the figure. “That is so weird,” she told her friends. “I can’t believe it. Can you believe it?” The figure is said to have taken over 500 hours to sculpt and mold and reportedly cost $300,000 to make. “That is crazy,” Stefani said while viewing the statue, six months after sitting down with sculptors for measurements in London. Madame Tussauds organizers said the Stefani was consistently one of the most requested wax figures that customers wanted to see. –Mark Gray

Gwen Stefani has no shortage of fans, but there’s one in particular that she always keeps close to her heart–and head! The designer’s longtime hairstylist Danilo was backstage at the designer’s L.A.M.B. show during New York Fashion Week, creating messy, ethnically-inspired braids for Gwen’s stable of models–and for the superstar herself. Aptly enough, the duo got their start working together at a fashion show years ago. “I was backstage doing hair for Vivienne Westwood, and [Gwen's] makeup artist at the time really wanted us to meet,” Danilo told PEOPLE of their first encounter. “Little did either of us know that it would be a mad love affair.” He continued, “We’re close. We do everything together. And we can’t get enough of it. We wish there was more to do. I get along with the husband, the kids, everybody. They have definitely been my second family.” Stefani returns the compliment, both professionally and personally. “He’s back there right now, making it all happen,” said Stefani enthusiastically, “I love him.” –Jeffrey Slonim

To honor some of the biggest names in the business, Fashion Group International called upon the luxe labels’ star clients including, Gwen Stefani, James Franco, Jon Bon Jovi and Mary J. Blige, “I’ve been a Gucci girl as long as I remember Gucci being around,” said Blige, who kicked off the evening by joining Franco in giving Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini the Star Honoree award. “I went to the fashion show in Milan,” she told PEOPLE after stepping down from the stage, “And everything that was coming down that runway, I was screaming. So many people keep their game-face on: they are quiet. I was screaming.” And while the singer relished her time praising the designer on stage and off, Gwen Stefani got a case of stage fright when giving a beauty award to Catherine Walsh, Coty’s Senior Vice President of American Fragrances. “”I hate doing this. This is my hell,” Stefani said of public speaking. Other stars who took to the stage included Jon Bon Jovi, who presented Kenneth Cole with a humanitarian award and Iman, who honored Michael Kors.
