Working girl or working actress? Evan Rachel Wood is a major player at this week’s Venice Film Festival in Italy, promoting several projects, including Mildred Pierce and The Ides of March. And the fashion darling — known for taking red-carpet risks — recently sported several looks that could work for the press room or the board room.

Wednesday, Wood arrived for an Ides of March press conference in a Dolce & Gabbana suit, made feminine by a lacy white blouse. (The designers created Beyoncé‘s sexy VMAs suit, too.) She finished the look with sleek Salvatore Ferragamo houndstooth pumps. That night, she turned up for the film’s premiere in an exaggerated white shantung shirtdress by Alessandra Rich.

Evan Rachel Wood Chops Her Locks

Short story: Evan Rachel Wood chopped her hair! The actress showed up to the Hollywood premiere of True Blood Tuesday night sporting a modern blonde pixie cut. Wood, who most recently dated Marilyn Manson, accentuated her androgynous new look with a chic gray vest and form-fitting pants accessorized with red suspenders. Want to style your hair similarly? Hair guru Mara Roszak, who coiffed Wood for the event, says to apply Volumactive spray all over the roots of wet hair. Next, blow dry in different directions, off the face, then take a dime-size amount of hard wax, rubbing it between your hands and spreading it through the hair with your fingertips from the back forward. Lay the sides of the hair flat and mess up the top, adding more wax as needed. Twist random pieces, then spray all over with René Furterer hairspray. Wood, a self-proclaimed “free spirit” is no stranger to hair experimentation: she’s been ginger-hued, dark and mysterious and most recently, honey-blonde (though always long). She likes to get people talking, too; when she revealed her bisexuality in April, Wood told Esquire that she thought she was “a little controversial. I just try and keep some mystery, so hopefully people can’t really put their finger on it.” Tell us: What do you think of Wood’s new haircut? –Kim Peiffer

Robin Wright: I Will Never Put on a Corset Again

“I will never put on a corset again. I vow to never wear one again,” The Conspirator‘s Robin Wright told PEOPLE Sunday at the film’s Washington, D.C., premiere. “That was the toughest part of the role, wearing that in the 100-degree heat on the set.” In addition to “sweating profusely” on location in Savannah, Ga., Wright and costar Evan Rachel Wood dealt with extra-heavy hoop skirts, too. “Having to walk around with your own gravitational pull was insane,” Wood said. “I don’t know how women did that. Robin and I kept talking about that the whole time. Even sitting down becomes an event.” While Wood has worked with corsets before (and on horseback!), she said she could never envision herself living during the Civil War era, when the film is set. “Absolutely not,” she exclaimed. “Mainly because of the corsets and the hoop skirts.” But the lack of makeup was jarring, too. Normally a makeup every day type of girl, Wood admits she “can’t leave the house without mascara.” However, her role as the daughter of a woman accused of conspiracy in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln required a decidedly less glam look. “It’s part of the territory,” she explained. “Playing a historical person, it helps. I didn’t think I looked anything like the [character] until they put the eyebrows on me, and the hair. It’s kind of eerie.” —Arnesa A. Howell

Playing everything from an ashen-faced vampire queen in True Blood to a bronzed vixen in Gucci’s latest fragrance campaign, style chameleon Evan Rachel Wood is ready to surprise her fans at every turn. “I have fun playing with makeup,” she tells PEOPLE. The actress shared many of her favorite style tips, including the secret to keeping her porcelain visage flawless: “I am SPF crazy. I have sunscreen in the door of my car. I have sunscreen in my purse.” Sun protection aside, the self-professed Sephora fan likes to have fun pushing the beauty boundaries “to see how far I can go,” experimenting with everything from ultra-smoky eyes (she’s a fan of Stila Smudge Pots) to her tattoos–including one on the inside of her lip that she keeps hush-hush! Wood credits her daring style to growing up with a “very artistic family” that encouraged her to be different. “I try and surround myself with people who just aren’t afraid to be who they are and aren’t going to judge me for doing anything I’m doing.” The redhead’s latest role as the face for Gucci’s Guilty scent gives her the platform to do just that. “I love [the] idea of the Gucci woman being this take no prisoners, full throttle, is going to do what she wants to do [woman],” she says. “I think you can be just as tough in a pair of heels if you’re in control of it.” Hear more from the star in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on stands now. – Hana Choi, reporting by Jackie Fields
