Though many stars wimped out on going full punk for the Met Gala, there were plenty who got into the theme — with their eye makeup, at least.

Taylor Swift and Emmy Rossum opted for a more amped-up version of their normal smoky eye, adding heavy liner and smudged wings to go with their mussed hair.

Lily Collins traced where the winged liner might go with a sepia and powder-pink line — almost demure and girlie, when you consider her tough-girl Moschino ensemble.

And both Ginnifer Goodwin and Jessica Paré went totally bold and dramatic, with shimmery, dark color washed all the way up to their brows.

In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we noticed that stars were really into bright lips and long dresses. And with one notable exception, celebs were really enjoying playing up their natural complexions.

Up: Bright lips. Stars are all about reaching for the brights in their lipstick collection these days. Charlize Theron‘s hot pink pout was just one of many enviable star lip shades we saw, including Ashley Madekwe’s fuchsia and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s rich raspberry.

Three Perfect Lipstick Shades to Try This Week

Apr/15/2013 at 06:47 PM ET

If you’re ready to amp up your regular “mascara and clear gloss” beauty routine — or to swap out your red lipstick for something fresh for spring — look no further than the three lovely lip colors worn by Fergie, Rashida Jones and Emmy Rossum this weekend.

Fergie wore a rich, deep stain somewhere between a wine and a plum at the NewNowNext awards in L.A.. The shade, which had a hint of shimmer, was bold but not too intense — a good fit for her dramatic black high-low gown. It looks close to the “D-Vinely Chilled” color from her own Wet n Wild line.

Jones opted for a glossy saturated raspberry color at the Las Vegas Power of Love gala. You could get a similar look by slicking on Mark’s Make it Rich lip crayon in Peony and then topping it with a pinker gloss, like Gloss Gorgeous in Lolli.

And finally, Rossum’s pretty tangerine color at the Saving Tails benefit in Hollywood paired perfectly with her fresh face and messy braid. This is a little trickier to pull off, but Shiseido’s Shimmering Rouge lipstick in Mango is just sheer enough to be foolproof.

Red Carpet Trend Report: Bright Ideas, Modest Necklines and Giving ‘Bridesmaid-y’ Shoes the Boot

This week, stars tried all sorts of fun things on the red carpet — but they almost unanimously left one shoe style in the dust.

Up: Mixing Brights. Yes, Gwyneth Paltrow‘s grape Victoria Beckham mini is adorable on its own, but pairing it with those tangerine Michael Kors sandals elevates the look infinitely. This is a much easier way to try the ongoing mix-and-match trend than, say, mixing prints — but though the difficulty factor is low, the impact is still just as high (see: Emmy Rossum here). Try this with unexpected color pairings, like lemon and lime, magenta and cobalt or emerald and violet.

Four Fun Ways to Wear Curly Hair – Whether You’ve Got 10 Minutes or Two Hours

Apr/05/2013 at 03:13 PM ET

It seems as though every starlet in Hollywood is born with long, perfectly beachy waves — or at least clicking through “Last Night’s Look” can make it feel that way. What’s a girl with curly hair to do for tress inspiration?

Well, the hair gods must have been listening to our complaints, because this week alone, four curly-haired stars went out with very different looks, all of which those of us born without red-carpet-ready hair can achieve.

Emmy Rossum: You’d never know it from her normally glossy locks, but Rossum’s hair is quite curly. To get her modified pony, spritz dry shampoo through day-old waves, then blow out roughly with a round brush and finish with a flat iron. Your natural texture gives the do volume and a little edge.
