We pored over all the photos of celebs at premieres, fundraisers and parties from this week and made predictions about the two frock styles that are growing in popularity and the chunky kicks that are slowly getting replaced by a much more delicate counterpart. And in case you’re wondering, yes, these apply to off-the-carpet, casual looks too. So be sure to read on before your next shopping spree — and we promise you’ll be way ahead of the style curve.

Up: Dresses with textures: We love silk and chiffon as much as the next girl, but we have to admit that the sudden rise in frocks featuring textured material is making us want to ditch smooth fabrics in favor of ones that pack a little more punch. Diane Kruger‘s blue-and-black Chanel dress made us think of flecks of foil and Britney Spears‘s gray Halston Heritage gown had the look of dripping metal. We also wanted to reach out and touch Emma Roberts’s Armani Exchange dress, which featured an interesting raised blue print.

Are You Loving Diane Kruger’s Bobby Pin-Filled Braid?

We have to hand it to Diane Kruger: not only is she gorgeous, but she’s able to wear just about anything and still look super-chic.

We recently developed even more of a girl crush on her during the Cannes Film Festival, when she wore a Dior couture gown so elaborate, she literally had to be cut out of it (with the help of doting boyfriend Joshua Jackson). To us, that’s true dedication to fashion.

While we tend to love most of Kruger’s choices — even the more extreme ones — while flipping through our favorite photos recently, we did a double take when we saw the side-swept hairstyle she wore to a Sleeping Beauty premiere last year. There were just so many bobby pins! And it looked, well, slightly unkempt for the usually put-together star.

On one hand, we can see the hairstyle on a runway, but on the other, we think a simple braid or slightly undone chignon might have looked better. What do you think? Are you loving Kruger’s messy braid? Vote in our poll below and leave your thoughts in the comments; your feedback could appear in the December/January issue of PEOPLE StyleWatch.

No pain, no fashion gain.

Super stylish actress Diane Kruger (one of PEOPLE’s Best Dressed stars) admits she’s not immune to pain and mishaps when it comes to fashion.

Luckily, she has her boyfriend of five years, actor Joshua Jackson, to rescue her.

“I have suffered a lot for fashion,” Kruger told PEOPLE at Thursday’s Calvin Klein spring 2013 collection show in New York.

“I recently wore a beautiful old Dior Couture gown for the [Cannes] Film Festival and it had a huge bodice. It was so big that it took me an hour to get into it and the only way for me to go to the bathroom was to take off the bodice,” she shared. “Once I finished dinner, I had to go to the bathroom and it became so tight that I couldn’t breathe anymore.”

What was the damsel in distress to do? “Josh had to come with me to the lady’s room and cut me out of it,” Kruger continued. “He literally had to help me remove the dress to help me go to the bathroom. It was crazy!”

Guess that $55,000 was well worth it! The Duchess of Cambridge tops the Vanity Fair best-dressed list this year, nabbing a spot for the third year in a row.

The magazine lauds Kate’s recognition of British designers — Alexander McQueen, Alice Temperley and Matthew Williamson among them — as well as her ability to mix high- and lower-end styles.

Joining Kate is her brother-in-law, Prince Harry, who makes the list for the first time ever (sadly, Prince William is not named). Rounding out the famous royals is Monaco’s Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Princess Caroline.

There’s major Hollywood representation on the roster, as well: newcomer Jessica Chastain also lands atop the list, joined by Diane Kruger (making it for a second time), Fan Bingbing, plus Colin Firth and his eco-conscious wife, Livia. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys represent the music world, while New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz earn props for their off-field looks.

Why Diane Kruger’s ‘Farewell, My Queen’ Costumes Were Sexy to Joshua Jackson

Diane Kruger loved playing ill-fated French Queen Marie Antoinette in her latest film, Farewell, My Queen — but she doesn’t have a hankering to be the next Duchess of Cambridge.

“I do like the royals and I definitely watched their wedding,” she told PEOPLE Monday at a screening of the film in N.Y.C. But, she smiled, “I think it’s something we can dream about in our society. I myself have never wanted to be in an ivory tower — I gotta be honest.”

Still, the outfits she wore as a queen in the movie certainly impressed her boyfriend, actor Joshua Jackson.

“I definitely made the effort to go see her in the full queen regalia. It’s a one-time thing in an actor’s life. It was sexy — period, full stop,” Jackson told reporters about Kruger’s opulent costumes. “I mean, it was kind of a kinky fetish thing with the wigs and the corsets,” he continued. “I don’t know how [people] survived that period. Foreplay must’ve been a sonofabitch. It takes a nation of millions to get those things on and off.”

It looks like some of our favorite starlets are taking a cue from the boys lately: newsboy caps (a.k.a. baker boy caps) are suddenly all the rage.

In just one week, both Diane Kruger and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley were spotted sporting the old-school topper.

Kruger paired her hat with a pale blue dress by Chanel at the design house’s couture show in Paris last week, while the Burberry model wore hers with a leather jacket while checking out Rihanna‘s performance at the Barclaycard Wireless Festival in London on Sunday.

Hollywood’s hottest stars can get and wear anything they want, but sometimes they all sport the same thing. Case in point: Givenchy sandals.

Most recently, we spotted the cream shoes on Beyoncé at the BET Awards on Monday, while Diane Kruger teamed the kicks with her menswear-inspired dress last week in Paris.

In late June, Michelle Williams also donned a pair at a film screening in New York City and newly appointed QVC designer Jennifer Hudson wore the stilettos last month at a Manhattan gala.
