How Christina Hendricks Goes Unnoticed in Los Angeles

It seems that these days, Christina Hendricks has multiple personalities. There’s her everyday self, her Mad Men alter ego Joan Holloway and most recently, her silver screen character, Drive‘s sultry Blanche. So not surprisingly, each version of the star has its own look.

In Drive, Hendricks transformed into a dowdy stripper. “The idea was that she kind of look a little terrible,” she tells V magazine. “We chose makeup colors that were just a little bit off, lipstick that was a little too purple and colored my hair a pinkish magenta.” The clothes were quite, uh, special, too. “You’re never going to catch me wearing an acid-wash hoodie any other time,” she jokes.

Flip over to AMC’s retro-chic Mad Men, and Hendricks is in girdles, garters, pencil skirts and heels that often leave her in pain. “I still get a little bruised up,” she admits of the looks. “Now I put moleskin underneath the rubber [in my costumes] so it doesn’t rub against my skin. I’m learning the tricks of the trade.”

Christina Hendricks’s Style Splurges? Facials and ‘Truly Beautiful’ Dresses

She doesn’t have too much in common with her Mad Men character, Joan Holloway, but actress Christina Hendricks has taken a major style tip from her on-screen alter ego. “Wear pencil skirts,” she tells PEOPLE. “I have a fantastic black fishtail one from Banana Republic that I’ve been wearing for years.” Admitting she’ll splurge on “a truly beautiful dress, because even if it’s expensive, it’s a whole outfit,” the curvaceous star says she lusts after designs from L’Wren Scott and Dolce & Gabbana. But she’s not just into fashion: her beauty routine includes La Mer moisturizer, Benefit erase paste concealer, twice-yearly Ole Henriksen facials (“My skin glows for two months afterward,” she says of her visits) and Premier Figuier by L’Artisan Parfumeur. “My friends are always like, ‘Oh yeah, we knew you were coming,’” she says of her signature scent. “Not that I wear that much of it!” But Hendricks, an ambassador for the Latisse Wishes Challenge, reveals it’s her hair that requires the majority of her attention. Naturally a dark blonde, she hits the salon “every six weeks” to maintain her color. Not that she minds. “I have always felt sassier as a redhead,” she shares. “I don’t even know what my real color would look like at this point.” For more of Hendricks’s style picks, check out the July 18 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now. –Reporting by Jackie Fields and Suzanne Zuckerman

Christina Hendricks’s Not-So-Dark Secret: She’s a Natural Blonde!

Christina Hendricks is a natural blonde

She looks ravishing with red hair, but Mad Mens Christina Hendricks has a secret: that’s not her real hair color! “Yes, the rumors are true — I’m naturally a dark blonde,” she reveals to ELLE.com. “I couldn’t tell you what shade, because I haven’t seen it in ages.” That’s because Hendricks’s quest for auburn locks began quite some time ago. “I started playing with red hair when I was 10 years old,” she says. “I recognize how odd it is now, but my mom let me do it. I was obsessed with Anne of Green Gables and Ginger of Gilligan’s Island, and lusted for that red hair.” And even though she was just a kid, Hendricks got what she wanted. “My mom said, ‘Well, let’s throw a rinse on it,’ and the next day, my teachers asked what had happened when I arrived at school with red hair.” But it wasn’t just red that the actress was experimenting with; she tried several colors of the rainbow before settling on her current hue. “In high school, I started experimenting with permanent color,” she shares. “My mom nearly cried one day when I came down the stairs in jet black hair. I got purple, pink and black out of my system during those years.” Tell us: What do you think of Hendricks’s hair secret? –Kim Peiffer

Christina Hendricks Bats Her Lashes for Latisse

Mad Men‘s Christina Hendricks is used to emoting through her eyes, and now, the actress will likely be batting her lashes a bit more, as a new spokeswoman for Latisse. The sexy star is participating in the Latisse Wishes Challenge, a campaign aiming to raise $500,000 to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation and grant a wish through every chapter nationwide — all while enhancing her lash line. Hendricks recently spoke to StyleList.com about her new gig and why she felt like her lashes needed an extra boost. “Because of my profession I end up wearing a lot of makeup and false eyelashes. I’ve noticed a wear on my lashes and that they’ve become thin,” she said. “I’ve been using the product for one month and in the past three to five days I’ve noticed extra length. I’m excited to see my results in 12 weeks.” Maybe she’ll even have to trim her lashes like fellow Latisse spokesperson Claire Danes! –Kim Peiffer

In her newest role, Mad Men star Christina Hendricks bares her heart as the face of Vivienne Westwood’s ‘Get a Life’ Palladium Jewelry Collection. In conjunction with The Palladium Alliance International, Westwood created a line of environmentally-conscious pieces made entirely of the lightweight precious metal. “I admire that Vivienne uses her designs to inspire change,” Hendricks, a lifelong Westwood fan, says of the line, which features symbols of hope including trees, acorns and hearts. “As Palladium is a naturally white metal, the pieces really sparkle under the lights,” she continues. “I cannot wait to wear them on the red carpet!” And the feeling is mutual, with Westwood proffering, “Christina is the embodiment of beauty and we were delighted to have been able to involve her with this new jewelry collection.” Westwood’s husband and collaborator, Andreas Kronthaler, agrees. “She’s got something, this American sweetheart beauty … you’d do anything to go out with her,” he told PEOPLE at the line’s recent launch party in London. “She’s magnificent — a bit like Marilyn Monroe. In front of the camera there’s something very sensual.” Available this month at Vivienne Westwood boutiques in London and Los Angeles, prices range from $445 to $900. And while the collection may not put a stop to global warming, it’s certainly a sterling start! –Justine Harman
