This Week's Best Dressed: It's as Clear as Black and White

Oct/12/2013 at 09:00 AM ET

Taylor Swift InStyleBrock Miller / Splash News Online

This week’s race for Best Dressed was a neck-and-neck black-and-white faceoff (we told you the color combo is really big right now), with the top three falling within a 500-vote difference at press time.

Reigning supreme was Jennifer Hudson, who proved you don’t have to wear a single pop of color to stand out on the red carpet. Her white Yigal Azrouel dress, accessorized with black pumps at the Power of Women event, was the very definition of figure-flaunting, and her fresh take on the peplum is likely what set her apart from the rest of the competition. And okay, we lied. She sported just the right hit of color via her wine-colored pout.

Giving Jennifer a run for her money was Charlize Theron, who also brought her LWD out for a spin at the Power of Women event (hers was a draped Stella McCartney mini with what we’re dubbing the “cutout turtleneck”). And Sandra Bullock rounded out the top three in a black strapless Antonio Berardi dress with white side panels at the USC Shoah Foundation Institute gala. And if you think that look is worthy of Best Dressed, you should see her other black-and-white number at the London premiere of Gravity (it’s our personal favorite of her press tour so far!).

So clearly black-and-white is back in a major way — and getting some serious love from readers. Did you like Jennifer’s take on the trend, or do you prefer Charlize or Sandra’s style? Or are you dying for some pops of color to make their way back to the red carpet?

Charlize Theron Buzzed Her Own Hair - And Loved It

Most women can’t imagine shaving off all their hair, let alone actually doing it themselves. Charlize Theron is not most women.

Shaving her head for her role in Fury Road felt “great!” she tells InStyle. “I had just finished two press tours and my hair was destroyed from heat damage, so I was glad to get rid of it. I was also a new mom and just loved the idea of not having to style my hair every morning. The timing was perfect.”

And in her enthusiasm, she took things a step further than other stars who had shaved their head for roles (think Anne Hathaway, whose stylist put on a dress to cut her hair on screen in Les Misérables).

In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we noticed that stars were really into bright lips and long dresses. And with one notable exception, celebs were really enjoying playing up their natural complexions.

Up: Bright lips. Stars are all about reaching for the brights in their lipstick collection these days. Charlize Theron‘s hot pink pout was just one of many enviable star lip shades we saw, including Ashley Madekwe’s fuchsia and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s rich raspberry.
