Which is why we were so excited to see Carey Mulligan’s May Vogue cover, which features her dressed just like her Gatsby character, Daisy Buchanan, from her 1920s-esque cap to the dazzling diamonds dangling from every possible surface.

Grammys’ Hottest Dates: The Dresses You Didn’t See

There were plenty of noteworthy dresses on the Grammy Awards red carpet Sunday night, however, three of our favorite looks belonged to supportive significant others who let their loves take the spotlight outside — but joined them indoors for the party.

Fun.’s biggest (and possibly most famous) fan, Lena Dunham, showed support for her boyfriend, the band’s guitarist Jack Antonoff, in a radiant yellow dress (worn with Forevermark diamonds) that could be seen even in long shots of the auditorium. She not only got to return the favor Antonoff paid by cheering her on at the Golden Globes, but she also got face time with her Twitter pal Taylor Swift.

Tabatha’s Takeover: Carey Mulligan Didn’t Dress to Impress

We all know Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s sharp-tongued Aussie style pro, from her stint on Shear Genius and her latest hit, Tabatha Takes Over. And now, she’s bringing her talents online, joining us at PEOPLE StyleWatch once weekly to dish on some of the best – and worst – celebrity looks of the week. Keep in mind the opinions below belong solely to the stylist … though she’s probably saying what lots of you are thinking, anyway!

Today, she takes on Carey Mulligan, who selected a sparkling cocktail dress for a recent charity event:

So this is my last critique for 2012 and I must say I think Santa has me on the naughty list. Seeing this dress on Carey Mulligan is like getting coal in my stocking! I’m not impressed and actually quite disappointed. She usually looks exceptionally stylish and fashion-forward and I feel like this is something she pulled out of her great aunt’s closet.

Don’t get me wrong — it’s not 100-percent horrible. This can be fixed. Now, picture the dress with no sleeves, a couple of inches shorter and fitted to Carey’s petite frame. Close your eyes and imagine it. I’m right, huh?! See, it’s a little beyond her years the way it is, but can be youthfully updated in no time.

We’ve seen cats and mice on shoes this year, but for fall, it’s all about foxes.

Recently, three stars have been spotted in Tory Burch’s adorable fox-topped loafers: Dallas star Jordana Brewster wore them (and toted the matching iPhone case) while out in Los Angeles on Friday (left); Brooklyn Decker chose them (twice!) for a trip to London in June (center); and Carey Mulligan wore them to the airport last week, pairing them with her comfy travel clothes (right).

The loafers (left) — a hot style for fall — are made of velvet and have a quilted fabric lining. But our favorite detail on the $250 shoes? The sweet grosgrain bow the fox wears over her ear. Too cute! Tell us: Are you planning to buy any loafers this fall?

It was another week full of parties (Chanel!), premieres (Rock of Ages!) and award shows (MTVs and CMTs!) so let’s break down which red carpet trends caught our eyes — and the looks we’re so tired of seeing. Here’s what’s hot (and not) this week:

Up: Disco ball dresses. If you’re going to go to a glam Hollywood event, then you should dress the part … which means over-the-top sequined dresses are absolutely encouraged! We’re obsessed with Carey Mulligan’s metallic paillette Prada number and the blinged-out silver Randi Rahm mini Carrie Underwood wore to the CMT awards.
