3 Trends Spotted at the Met Gala: Spikes, Gloves & Punktastic Hair Color

May/07/2013 at 09:00 AM ET

After you’ve clicked through all the amazing (we use that word in a good and bad way) looks stars wore to the annual Met Ball, scroll down to see the punk-ish style themes that kept popping up on the red carpet.

SPIKES: There was perhaps no trend more ubiquitous than these bad boys. Jessica Alba (carrying a Christian Louboutin clutch) and Cameron Diaz (in a golden belt) looked ready to skewer vegetables for a barbecue, while Cara Delevingne reminds us of a sexy porcupine in her sharply studded Burberry gown.

GLOVES: Unlike those spikes, we never could have predicted the presence of these ladylike accessories at Fashion Prom for Punks. But Kerry Washington and Beyoncé wore them with their gowns. And then there was Kim Kardashian, who wore gloves attached to her dress and in the same print.

PUNK HAIR COLOR: Lily Collins (rocking blue streaks), Diane Kruger (who dip-dyed her ponytail pink) and Alicia Keys (with red highlights) are giving us flashbacks to the Manic Panic-fueled days of middle school. Wonder if any of them, including Kerry Washington with her purple-ish mane, will keep the color after the Ball has ended.

Which of these trends would you consider trying?

What to Wear to Work Tomorrow

With so many celebs wearing pantsuits recently, we’ve felt inspired to try the smart look — and Cameron Diaz‘s is just the one to copy.

The star recently worked a laid-back version of the classic pantsuit that’s work-appropriate, yet still stylish.

Diaz paired her A.L.C. Jude pants (we found a similar pair for $30) with a slouchy white T-shirt and a cropped black blazer (we love this $65 one by Aqua).

She finished off the menswear-inspired look with pointy-toe black pumps (like this pair for just $69), a cream leather bag and a gold necklace.

While Diaz (or her stylist) felt the relaxed look called for an equally low-key ‘do and a neutral pink lip, you could also elevate the ensemble with an on-trend topknot and a sexy red lip. It all depends on how many times you hit snooze Monday morning — and how many minutes you leave yourself to get dressed! Tell us: What do you think of Diaz’s outfit?

We all know Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s sharp-tongued Aussie style pro, from her stint on Shear Genius and her latest hit, Tabatha Takes Over. And now, she’s bringing her talents online, joining us at PEOPLE StyleWatch once weekly to dish on some of the best — and worst — celebrity looks of the week. Keep in mind the opinions below belong solely to the stylist … though she’s probably saying what lots of you are thinking, anyway!

Today, she discusses Cameron Diaz, who wore a yellow Gucci dress to the LACMA Art + Film gala in L.A. over the weekend:

Cameron, I love your new bangs! The fact they are shaggy and not blunt is absolutely perfect for your face. Bra-vo you look fantastic!

And I’m going to be quite honest; I think your overall look is really well thought out and on point for this season. Now, as you know, I love black clothing, but this mustard frock is eye-catching and fabulous, especially for your complexion. The shape of the dress is beyond flattering for your body and the belted waist really draws the eye in. And those sleeves! They make a statement, and are divine.

Pants on the Red Carpet: Yea or Nay?

Minka‘s done it. Olivia and Rachel, too. But is wearing pants to a red carpet event a do or a don’t?

Obviously it’s not a new trend — hello, Tilda Swinton! — but lately it’s seeming more mainstream. Cameron Diaz was the latest star to try the look, wearing a ’70s-inspired pantsuit designed by pal Stella McCartney to the What to Expect When You’re Expecting premiere in London Tuesday night.

Kristen Stewart followed suit Wednesday, choosing patterned Balenciaga pants to complement her black blazer, Juicy Couture top, Cartier bracelet and heels while walking the carpet in Cannes.

What do you think? Are fancy pants OK for the carpet? Or do you prefer to see your favorite stars in dresses? Vote in our poll below!

Nina Dobrev, Cameron Diaz Dish on Met Gala Dress Difficulties

May/10/2012 at 06:00 PM ET

Nina Dobrev and Cameron Diaz both looked stunning at Monday night’s Met Gala — but there’s a lot of difficulty involved in looking so good.

“It was so form fitted and made of vintage gold metal, and so tight. It was beautiful,” Dobrev said of her Donna Karan Atelier gown while speaking to Conan O’Brien Wednesday. “They literally had to sew me into it so everything fit and then they sent me off!”

The talk show host called the whole fiasco “medieval,” and asked how the Vampire Diaries star was able to go to the bathroom. “You call the designer and they have an emergency sewing kit, they cut you out of it, and then they’ll sew you back in,” she explained, adding that she tried to avoid bathroom breaks all night but eventually had to give in. “You write on your phone, ‘It’s go time. Now,’” she joked.
