How Soccer Star Hope Solo Is Prepping for the Olympics … Off the Field

“I have a motto that’s ‘Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good,’” Hope Solo tells PEOPLE. But she admits that sometimes, she hasn’t been able to live up to those words.

“Over the last 10 years I’ve really struggled with my skin in major soccer tournaments — the Olympics, World Cups,” she says. “That’s in front of millions of viewers. And I still to this day have to sign autographs on some of the older pictures where I have some not-so-great-looking skin. I get pretty insecure about that.”

Blaming her constant travels and sweaty practices for her breakouts, the soccer star says she didn’t realize she was struggling with sensitive skin. “I never used that terminology,” she explains. “I knew that my skin broke out, I knew that it would sting and get redness depending on what products I used, but I didn’t know that meant it was sensitive.”

How Snoop Dogg Inspired Derek Jeter’s ‘Scentsual’ Memories

Listening to Snoop Dogg’s “Lodi Dodi” proved particularly influential for Derek Jeter: it turned him on to his first fragrance. “When I was younger I used to wear Cool Water,” he shyly admitted to a group of reporters in New York Wednesday, referencing the rap’s lyrics.

That cologne proved to be influential, too; it ultimately inspired the Yankees star to create his own fragrance, Derek Jeter Driven, and the newer Driven Black. “When I did this one years ago, the whole thing was a learning process,” he explained of Driven. “I was literally smelling all the different smells.”

The smells in his newer cologne include Sicilian blood orange, Italian bergamot, saffron, white cedar and Australian sandalwood. “It’s different [than Cool Water],” he joked, “but there are some similarities.”

Jeter, who said he’s a ‘spray and walk through the scent’ kind of guy, has a very easy morning routine. “I take a shower. I’m pretty simple. I don’t really take care of myself like I should.”

CoverGirl Gets Olympics-Ready with Two Fresh New Faces

Sofia and Taylor have some competition: there are two new CoverGirls in town. In anticipation of the 2012 London Olympics, the beauty brand just signed two athletes who’ll be at the big games: boxer Marlen Esparza and beach volleyball player Jennifer Kessy.

“I have always dreamed of being a CoverGirl,” Kessy tells PEOPLE, adding that when she was asked to be a face of the brand she “thought [she] was being punked.” But the California native is getting very excited about her new gig. “I remembered all the times I stared at the ads in the magazines, and remembered that CoverGirl always writes the names of the models in their ads. I couldn’t believe my name was going to be next to my picture in a magazine. Best feeling ever!”

Kessy and Esparza will promote two new limited-edition products — LashBlast Volume Mascara and Outlast All-Day Lipcolor — through print and TV ads beginning in May.

WATCH: What Are Katy Perry and David Beckham Running From?

They’re two of the fittest stars around, and now it’s pretty clear why. Katy Perry and David Beckham pound the pavement — quickly! — in new ads for Adidas’s ClimaCool shoes.

The stars, joined by Bulls point guard Derrick Rose and Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi, go for runs in their hometowns in the latest spots, set to a remix of Perry’s single, “Part of Me.” Their colorful, ventilated shoes — designed to reduce foot temperature and in-shoe moisture during warm workouts — are available now on adidas.com for $100.

Beckham and Perry are longtime faces of the brand; he designed a capsule collection in 2009, while she opened up about her style icons in a spot for Adidas last year.

Michael Phelps Will ‘Never’ Shave His Head

Daily chlorine exposure wreaks havoc on star swimmer Michael Phelps’s hair. “It feels dead at times,” he admits to PEOPLE. But dealing with dry scalp issues isn’t enough to make the Olympian go to extremes.

“I would never shave my hair, zero shot,” he says. “If it falls out then it falls out. But I could never actually take a razor to my head and BIC it. I just couldn’t imagine it. I couldn’t see myself without hair.”

Luckily he won’t need to resort to shaving anytime soon: Phelps is the face (and, um, scalp) of the Head & Shoulders “Wash in Confidence” campaign, designed to boost self-esteem through healthy hair. “Head & Shoulders really helps re-moisturize my head, my hair and my scalp,” the athlete says. “It feels good, it feels clean.”

Phelps’s face is on select bottles of Head & Shoulders now, a part of the campaign he calls “kind of weird, strange and cool. I never imagined I’d be on the front of a shampoo bottle.” But he’s happy to be a spokesman for the brand, especially going into the 2012 London summer Olympics.

Maria Sharapova’s Surprising Shoe Design Inspirations

She has a big match coming up — an exhibition at New York’s Madison Square Garden in March — but Maria Sharapova is also focused on fashion these days. The tennis star sat front row at several big runway shows this week (Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs, to name a few), and is continually hard at work on her Cole Haan accessories collection.

“I always imagined myself being involved in design, but I never thought [others would show] such good interest in [my work],” she tells PEOPLE. “I haven’t even been in the business for that long.”

Sharapova began designing footwear and handbags for the brand in 2008; brightly colored pumps, sandals and flats (like the Air Bacara Ballet, above) pepper her current collection.

“Flats were the first shoe I wanted to design,” she shares. Given that she stands at 6-ft., 2-in., that definitely makes sense. “My style is pretty laid back, but I do occasionally like to put on a heel.”
