Ashley Greene Recalls Her Worst Hair Mishaps

Sure she looks gorgeous on a daily basis now, but Ashley Greene didn’t always know how to best take care of her skin and hair.

“I think the biggest mistake I ever made was when one of my friends was like, ‘You should just iron your hair with an iron,’” she tells Stylelist. Needless to say, “It was not good at all. It was just stick-straight. I was probably around 14 when I did that; I did a lot of dumb things at 14.”

She’s also moved past over-dying — “My hair’s been every color under the sun,” she admits — and over-scrunching, too. “I used entirely too much hair gel,” she says. “It was highly flammable, extremely crunchy. I feel like you could break it. It was not a good look for me.”

These days, though, the Twilight star is feeling more comfortable in her own skin, and encouraging others to find that confidence, too. “I don’t know that I’ve ever met someone who hasn’t had some type of insecure moment or stage,” she shares. But “I understand that a lot of things aren’t the end of the world. There were certain things I was very insecure about, but I’m constantly going out there trying to make girls feel like they are special, and I think it rubs off on me.”

Ashley Greene: I’ve Never Considered Myself a Fashion Icon

These days, Ashley Greene isn’t just a role model to her fans; she’s a source of style inspiration, too.

“It’s certainly something that I’ve read and people have voiced that they do consider me one of their fashion icons, and it’s really flattering and I’m really thankful for it,” she told PEOPLE Thursday before a meet-and-greet at Macy’s Herald Square. “But it’s always interesting to me — growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, I never considered myself a fashion icon at all, or anything even close.”

But now, Greene — the face of DKNY and DKNY Jeans — has many a stylish eye looking her way thanks to the premieres and parties she attends. “It’s really fun for me to be able to be exposed to the red carpet and the dresses and the clothing, and working with Donna [Karan], because it’s broadened my horizons,” she said. “And now other people are responding to the things I’m wearing, so it’s fun for me, too.”

Why Emmy Rossum Wore Her Donna Karan Dress Backward

Sitting front row at Donna Karan’s fall 2012 show on Monday, Emmy Rossum was the picture of a fashionable fan in a purple dress by the designer. But she added her own special twist to the ensemble.

“I decided to wear it backward,” she told PEOPLE. “I put it on and the draping was in front. I thought the draping was a little much for 2 p.m., so now it’s got draping in the back, and kind of a weird neck. It was my call.”

Luckily, Karan’s team was fine with the change. “They said, ‘Good, make it your own,’” she shared. And Rossum was happy to take such a fashion risk, too. “There’s a first time for everything,” she said.

After taking her seat, Rossum — joined by DKNY spokesmodel Ashley Greene, Adriana Lima, Rose McGowan (who almost missed the show thanks to a wayward driver) and Rachel Zoe (also running late) — took in the collection of structured red, gray and black coats, dresses and separates that were architecturally exquisite.

She’s on top of the world — or, at least, on top of Manhattan. Ashley Greene strikes several sexy poses from atop New York’s famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in high-fashion photos for DKNY’s spring 2012 campaign.

The Twilight star, shot by photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, takes DKNY and DKNY Jeans “to new heights for spring,” according to a release, which invites fans to look “at New York City — where there is always something new to discover — and DKNY from a new perspective, high above the city streets.”

Ashley Greene: My DKNY Ads are an ‘Extension of Me’

Ashley Greene: New Face of DKNY

When Ashley Greene agreed to appear in the spring 2012 ads for DKNY and DKNY Jeans, she wasn’t prepared for the magnitude of the project.

“I was walking and I was like ‘Oh! I didn’t expect to see that!’ she tells PEOPLE of confronting her Times Square billboard for the first time. “It’s humungous.”

The images, shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who have worked with everyone from Kate Moss to Lady Gaga, are what she calls “edgy and a little rockstar-ish.”

Crediting the photographers’ expertise (“They are like a well-oiled machine. It was very easy, breezy, organic and fun”) and a temporary clip-in fringe  (“It kind of totally transforms things”), Greene calls the ads “an extension of me.”

Ashley Greene ‘Immediately Said Yes’ to DKNY Jeans Gig

Dazzling in a red custom-made Donna Karan gown at the Breaking Dawn Part 1 premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, Ashley Greene told PEOPLE she was “so excited” to be the new face of the designer’s DKNY and DKNY Jeans lines.

“I immediately said yes,” she said about the offer to endorse them. “I previously had a bit of a relationship with Donna Karan to begin with. It’s just a very organic fit.” In fact, she wore dresses by the designer to the Met Costume Institute Gala and a New York City screening of Breaking Dawn as well.

But Greene, also a face of Mark cosmetics, doesn’t only appreciate DKNY’s looks, but the designer behind them, as well.

“I actually really do love her clothes, and I feel like she’s a very empowered woman,” Greene, who will appear in the brands’ spring 2012 ad campaigns, added of Karan. “It just kind of fits right in with everything that I’m a part of already.”
