Emmys Red Carpet: Brights, Metallics and Retro Beauty Rule!

Jason Merritt/FilmMagic; Frazer Harrison/Getty; UPI /Landov

Looking at the Emmy Awards red carpet tonight, one might think that it was mid-summer with all the bright colors ruling the red carpet. Canary yellow took center stage with Saffron Burrow’s Herve Leroux gown, Mariska Hargitay‘s Carolina Herrera and Teri Hatcher‘s Monique Lhuillier. Shades of aqua and turquoise made a great showing, too, from Christina Applegate to Cynthia Nixon to Mary Louise Parker. And, of course, there were plenty of black and navy gowns on Hayden Panettiere, Debra Messing and America Ferrera. Eva Longoria and fellow Desperate Housewives Dana Delany and Felicity Huffman made a dazzling case for silver accents. And for beauty, retro waves ruled from Kyra Sedgwick to Sandra Oh, and bold red lips turned up on Kate Walsh and more. Click here to see all of the fashion and beauty coverage from the Emmy Awards.

Would You Wear Horizontal Stripes Like Cameron Diaz?

jackson Lee/Ahmad Elatab/Splash new online

For years it’s been touted as the number one rule for dressing slimmer: avoid horizontal stripes. But stars all over size-obsessed Hollywood have been sporting it recently on shirts, tees — and even full dresses. Since we love the look on the celebs like Cameron Diaz, Jessica Biel and America Ferrera, featured in our new Stars in Stripes gallery, we’re really considering adding it to our spring wardrobe with a sailor shirt or two. But we want to know what you think! Tell us: Would you wear horizontal stripes?

Get the Look: America, Ellen and Marion’s Red-Carpet Beauty

AMERICA FERRERA
To create America’s modernized Old Hollywood Glamour look, makeup artist Vanessa Scali first applied Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, $55, which she set with Armani Sheer Powder, $44, then gave the star’s cheeks a subtle glow with Guerlain Terracotta 3 bronzing powder, $40. To keep the focus on America’s eyes, Scali first applied Lancome Vue shadow, a golden sheer shimmer from the Color Design Artist Palette eyeshadows in Couture Warms and Stylish Neutrals, $70 each, over the lid, and then added further definition with Click, a taupe-brown shimmer from the Stylish Neutrals Palette, while Lancome Artliner in Noir, $28, lined them precisely. She created ultra-thick lashes with Lancome CILS Booster XL super-enhancing mascara base, $22, and Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara, $24. The final touch was an all-over application of Lancôme Raisinberry Le Lipstique Lipcolouring Stick, $23, topped off with Lancôme Color Fever Gloss in On Fire, $23.

What Should the Stars Have Worn to the Golden Globes?

No glitz, no glam, no gorgeous gowns. No doubt about it, last weekend’s replacement of the usually star-studded Golden Globe Awards with a live press-conference didn’t do much to satisfy our celeb-fashion obsession. And while we might not have been able to see Best Actress in a Movie Drama nominee Angelina stroll the red carpet in L’Wren Scott, or TV Comedy Series Actress nominee America Ferrera strike a pose in Zac Posen, that didn’t stop us from dreaming. Click here for our gallery of what we wish the stars had worn, and get in on the action by voting for your favorites.

Would You Wear a High-Waisted Skirt Like America?

Lawrence Lucier/FilmMagic

With her curvy shape, America Ferrera really works this 40′s inspired glam look. But she’s not the only one star who’s loving high-waisted pencil skirts — we’ve spotted everyone from Victoria Beckham to Kate Walsh donning it. Unlike high-waisted jeans (which are tough on many body shapes), these sexy numbers are universally flattering and actually slim down your silhouette. Just remember to wear it with stilettos, wedges or high heeled boots. The longer your leg appears, the better. Tell us: Is this a trend you would try?
