How Alicia Keys Turned Her Love of Sneakers Into a New Design Job

Growing up, Alicia Keys loved Reebok’s 5411 sneakers. “When I loved them, they were $54.11,” she tells PEOPLE. “I’ve been a fan forever, since I was a little girl — that’s been my flow, my style.”

In fact, when creating the video for “If I Ain’t Got You,” Keys took a pair of 5411s and customized them, thinking,”‘How cool would that be if I brought these back into my style?’,” she recalls. As time passed, “the opportunity presented itself — my husband [Swizz Beatz] works closely with Reebok — and I just loved how they’re bringing back the brand in such an incredible way.”

Now, the soulful singer is designing her own take on the 5411s, a.k.a. the Freestyle Hi, as well as Reebok’s Freestyle Double Bubble, Classic Nylon Slim and Princess.

“This felt totally perfect,” Keys says of the collaboration. “It was everything I dreamed about growing up, and a style of shoe I connected to as a teen. It was another creative outlet for me.”

“Look what I done did!!” Alicia Keys gleefully Tweeted to followers last week, debuting a brand new ‘do. The soulful songstress, who’s lately rocked a softer, shoulder-length look, shared an Instagram collage of her sleek new cut, worn both straight and curly. (She even posted a pic of her longer locks on the ground post-chop.)

Keys has worn many a ponytail in recent months, perhaps due to the busyness of motherhood; she welcomed son Egypt in October 2010. “She’s just a natural mom,” her husband, Swizz Beatz, recently told PEOPLE. “She even surprised my mom, who wanted to give her tips but was like, ‘What tips can I give her?! She’s already ahead of the game.’” Tell us: What do you think of Keys’s new look?

There were millions of dollars of diamonds and bejeweled clutches galore at last night’s Met Gala in New York, but the hottest accessory was definitely a good-looking guy in a tux.

Jessica Biel arrived on the arm of fiancé Justin Timberlake; she worked an ivory satin deep-V gown with jade stones by Prada (and that ring!) while he accessorized his tux with a Cartier watch. Gisele Bündchen (in Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci) looked equally lovely on the arm of husband Tom Brady, who drew lots of looks for his new hairstyle.

Blake Lively was swept off her feet by another man on Tuesday night: designer Christian Louboutin. Lively, along with stars like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Calvin Klein and Tyrese, came out to Barneys New York to fête the legendary shoe designer on the 20th anniversary of his collection.

“They are the most beautiful shoes out there,” Lively told PEOPLE of Louboutin’s scarlet-soled creations. “And incredibly innovative.” Wearing her own pair of splatter-paint snakeskin stilettos, the Gossip Girl star said “it’s embarrassing” how many pairs of the heels she owns. But she’s not alone: more than 200 fashion lovers toasted the designer Tuesday and waited patiently as he autographed copies of his new self-titled book. When he signed Klein’s tome, he wrote, “For my dear, Calvin.”

Style stars like Katie Holmes and Kim Kardashian have turned into Hollywood heroes, recently starring in the new Buy Life ad campaign for Alicia KeysKeep a Child Alive initiative, which raises money for those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. Other A-listers like Usher and Serena Williams are also lending their faces to the charitable campaign, stripping down to jeans and T-shirts that feature unique scannable bar codes, which make easier than ever to donate to the charity. “With the launch of our Buy Life campaign, I am confident less people will needlessly have to die because of lack of proper care which means more children will still have parents to raise them and guide them. I’m never more inspired, then when I’m doing this!” said Keys in a statement about her Sept. 30 Black Ball event, which raised over $2.4 million for KCA. “With the money raised from last night, KCA can now help save even more lives affected by this painful and unnecessary pandemic.” For more information on the Buy Life campaign, which has made KCA the first charity to use barcode technology to save a life, visit buylife.org. –Jessie Goldberg
