London Fashion Week So Far: Mulberry, Burberry and Lots of Star Power

While those of us in our east coast office are still recovering from New York Fashion Week, our British counterparts are busy stylespotting all over London for — you guessed it — London Fashion Week. Here, read up on the latest from the chic shows and star-packed front rows:

Mulberry

Mulberry celebrated another “monster” hit when its latest collection showed at London’s Claridges on Sunday morning. Greeting front row attendees such as Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Olsen and Olivia Palermo were two giant yeti creatures standing guard over the catwalk — and guests’ seats were covered in shaggy goat hide, too.

Inspired by Maurice Sendak’s book Where The Wild Things Are (with English boarding school references tossed in), the collection was a mix of delicate lace and printed dresses teamed with chunky Mongolian fur jackets and shaggy gilets. Models were sporting the latest Mulberry bag, the Del Rey, named after singer Lana Del Rey, who sat front row with her white ostrich leather bespoke edition (and performed at a private dinner later that evening). The show closed playfully with The Muppet Show theme song.

Though stars like Palermo are fashion week veterans, actress Olsen confessed to being a newbie. “This is my first Mulberry show and my second fashion show ever,” she told PEOPLE beforehand. “I have no real reason to go to them. But I’ve heard Mulberry is quirky and fun so this is really exciting!”

WATCH: Stars Celebrate Mulberry at London Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is just a memory, but London Fashion Week is in full swing, and a slew of celebrities recently hopped the pond to see the latest in British style.

Over the weekend, Mulberry showed its fall 2012 collection at Claridge’s Hotel, with stars like Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Olsen, Lana Del Rey and Azealia Banks sitting front row (Vogue editrix Anna Wintour was there, too). The brand’s collection, inspired in part by Where the Wild Things Are, was an instant hit.

“It means everything’s game,” Olsen said of the show’s imaginative theme. “I really loved playing with the furs and the patterns and the lace and the beading.”

Exclusive Sneak Peek: Alexa Chung Brings the Drama on ’24 Hour Catwalk’

Snarky comments, tons of tension … and live snakes? This isn’t Project Runway, it’s 24 Hour Catwalk, Lifetime’s newest fashion design series, hosted by model Alexa Chung. The show, which kicks off Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 10 p.m. ET on Lifetime, pits four designers against one another to create collections and stage a runway show in, you guessed it, just 24 hours.

Each standalone episode features a “first-cut challenge” and elimination, narrowing the field to the two designers who’ll compete in the runway show. Contestants are assigned a team of professional sewers — all of whom have strong opinions on style — and present their three-piece collections in front of a panel that includes designer Cynthia Rowley, fashion editor Derek Blasberg and publicist James LaForce, plus Chung.

She’s done it again! The Duchess of Cambridge landed atop the U.K. Harper’s Bazaar best-dressed list today, just three months after earning a spot on Vanity Fair‘s list of style stars. The latest honor was bestowed by a panel that included designers Antonio Berardi and Roksanda Ilincic (a Kate favorite), milliner Philip Treacy and Bazaar editors Kim Hersov and Lucy Yeomans.

“Catherine’s incredible style evolution has gripped us all,” Yeomans explains on harpersbazaar.com.uk. “She gave us the year’s — if not the century’s — most thrilling fashion moment at the royal wedding, and is shaping up as an amazing ambassador for British designers and the high street.”

Singer Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine landed in second place — “She’s fairytale,” writes Ilincic — followed by British stars including Kate Moss, Keira Knightley, Emma Watson, Alexa Chung and Stella McCartney. All in all, 20 women were included on the list.

Alexa Chung Reveals Her Nutty Halloween Costume

Alexa Chung's Halloween CostumeMarion Curtis/Startraks

Women everywhere are copying her style following the debut of her Madewell collection, but for Halloween, Alexa Chung is going to wear something that’s all her own.

“A palm tree,” Chung told FabSugar.com recently when asked what she’s dressing as on Oct. 31. “I’m going to wear brown tights and a brown leotard and I’m going to make a sort of headpiece into green leaves.” And no palm tree ensemble would be complete without a coconut bra, which the star also intends on adding to the outfit.

That’s not all she’ll be wearing this fall, though: the model admitted she’s coveting a few key items, including a black roll-neck sweater and a pale pink mohair coat by Philosophy. “That whole ’60s fall collection they did was perfect,” she said. And she’ll be drawing inspiration from her style icons — Keith Richards, Wednesday Addams and the Beatles, to name a few. Hmm … are we sure she’s not still talking about Halloween? Tell us: What are you going as for Halloween?

WATCH: Stars Celebrate Fashion Week with Mulberry

Luxe British label Mulberry has no shortage of celebrity fans, and several of them popped up in New York City Monday night to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary in style.

Alexa Chung, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michelle Trachtenberg, Rose Byrne and a host of others raved about the evening’s true star player: Mulberry (watch the clip above to hear them speak). But when they weren’t gushing over handbags and dresses, they sipped margaritas and enjoyed music, dancing, balloon animals and small bites atop the Skylight West Studios in Manhattan.

The celebration didn’t end there, though; the brand was also fêting the recent opening of its new flagship store in New York’s SoHo neighborhood, and another star-studded party will take place across the pond next week in celebration of London Fashion Week.
