Every girl loves a spa day!

That’s why Vanessa Hudgens and celebrity skincare guru Sonya Dakar joined up with nonprofit Wish Upon a Teen to provide a day of pampering and beauty treatments for cancer-stricken teens and their mothers.

“I love kids, and I’ve been able to meet kids who have been dealing with cancer and their parents,” Hudgens told PEOPLE about the Mother’s Day event held at Sonya Dakar’s Beverly Hills clinic. “Just seeing the emotional strain, it’s really nice [that] events are held where the parents and the teens can get together and just relax and be pampered.”

Hudgens added, “It’s a really great opportunity for everyone to hang out and feel like a princess, which is always nice.”

Teens from the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA and their moms enjoyed facials, makeup and lash applications, hair styling and manicures — the latter of which happens to be Hudgens’s personal favorite beauty indulgence.

This week, Senior Style Editor Zoë Ruderman test-drives a fresh look on her nails and learns that getting a unique manicure doesn’t require a big time — or money — investment.

When celebs first started wearing velvet and Kim Kardashian deemed the trend a must-try, I wrote it off, knowing that the unforgiving fabric would never work for me. But I finally found a way to incorporate velvet into my look: with the velvet mani!

No, I’m not about to suggest you glue little swatches of the material on your nails (though if you do, please upload a pic of that here); I’m talking about the top coat from Julep that transforms a glossy, shiny manicure into a chic, matte, velvety one.

There’s a Pretty Crazy Story Behind Jennifer Hudson’s Oscars Manicure

We know we’d said that Oscars talk was over, but then we heard this pretty amazing tidbit, and just had to share.

It turns out that Jennifer Hudson‘s Oscars nail polish was created by none other than David Boreanaz. Yep, that David Boreanaz, of Buffy, Angel and Bones fame.

The actor tells PEOPLE that his wife, Jaime, and her friend, Melissa [Ravo, and her husband Aaron], developed their Chrome Girl line about a year ago, aiming to make a product that was “trendy, affordable and most of all, safe. Having a daughter who loves painting her nails — this really struck me,” the actor says. “I was behind it all the way.”

Though Boreanaz is busy with his day job, he’s helped in the nail polish process, choosing colors, names and packaging. “It’s a challenge, and I’m loving that,” he says.

So how did the star get his Hard to Get polish into — er, onto — Hudson’s hands? “We actually share the same agent, who has been so supportive of this launch,” he reveals. “She suggested Jennifer, and we loved the idea. She’s stunning and smart and fashionable and bold, and that’s the type of woman to whom our brand is geared toward.”

The Oscars Beauty Breakdown: Lips & Tips

Feb/25/2013 at 11:30 AM ET

Nail art? No thanks! Bold red lips? Not this year! We saw a surprising number of pale gowns on the Oscars red carpet Sunday night, and a number of soft, neutral beauty looks to go along with them. So here are seven stars whose pouts and nails we loved — and the scoop on the exact shades they’re wearing:

Jennifer Lawrence: When you’re wearing something as dramatic as that breathtaking Dior gown, you don’t need much else! So J. Law‘s makeup artist, Jillian Dempsey, went minimal with makeup, using Dior Addict lipstick in Beige Casual #222 to create a mauve lip. Manicurist April Foreman went a similar route, complementing the winner’s dress with CoverGirl Outlast Nail Gloss in Forever Frosted; an understated, ballet-inspired color.

Karlie Kloss, NYFW’s Busiest Model: ‘I’d Pick Sleep Over Champagne!’

Feb/18/2013 at 04:30 PM ET

Karlie Kloss Fashion WeekMediaPunch/Rex USA

From the N.Y.C. kickoff to the Paris finales, Fashion Week is really more like Fashion Month, so it’s no wonder that editors are already complaining of exhaustion. But one look at supermodel Karlie Kloss’s schedule should immediately put them to shame.

The 20-year-old fashion world darling closed shows for the biggest names in New York (including Carlina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein), fulfilled her duties as Mercedes Benz’s ambassador to Fashion Week, passed out her own Karlie’s Kookies in front of the tents and somehow squeezed in a trip to the Grammys in L.A.

And lest you think she took a break, she was already on the runway for Burberry in London by Monday. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” Kloss told PEOPLE at the Mercedes-Benz lounge. “I rushed here straight off the red-eye [from the Grammys] … [but] I know my limits.”

Those limits include curtailing parties during her busiest months. “I am definitely a sleep over champagne kind of girl,” she says. “I’m a hardworking girl, so I have to take care of myself!” On her must-have list: “These stick-on eye patch things that stick to your skin, called Skyn. I almost walk out of the house wearing them,” she shares. “You have to rest while you can, drink water and power through.”

Is there anything that does bother Kloss during Fashion Week? Well, maybe one teensy thing: “In fashion shows nails are almost as much of a statement as the clothes themselves. In every show you’ve got to change,” she says. “It’s awful when I get a great color that I love and I’m like, ‘Dang it, I only get to wear it for the next twenty minutes!’”

Tell us: Do you envy Kloss’s jetsetting lifestyle? How do you keep up your energy during a busy month?
