“Yes,” it’s more fun to be blonde, Katharine McPhee told PEOPLE at a Calvin Klein Collection, Cinema Society and Sony Pictures Classics-hosted screening of Broken Embraces at the Crosby Street Hotel on Tuesday night. But is it more work to stay blonde? McPhee also answered with a decided, “Yes!” So how often does the singer have to visit her colorist to maintain her platinum locks? “Depending on what I have going on,” she said, “every three-and-a-half, four weeks. Right now I’m almost at the too dark roots stage. So I get to play around with hats.” The short coif is also relatively new. “Peter Savitt cuts my hair. This is the same haircut I had during Fashion Week, but it’s just been growing out and I’ve been flattening it.” But changing up her do has provided a surprising side effect — throwing off the paparazzi! McPhee revealed, “I’ve gone for a doctor’s appointment in Beverly Hills. Call it method hair. When Sandra Bullock dyed her naturally brunette hair a golden blonde to play real life Memphis housewife Leigh Anne Tuohy in her film The Blind Side, her family had a distinctly unfavorable reaction. “They didn’t like it at all,” Bullock told PEOPLE at the New York City premiere of the film due in theaters Nov. 20. “It was entertaining for a couple of months but it’s not really my color palette.” In fact, Bullock says her husband, Monster Garage star Jesse James, did not find her lightened tresses attractive, which was a big relief. “Thank God an important person in my life didn’t want me being blonde. He was like, ‘I don’t like the blonde on you,’” she says. “You want him to say that!” Having experienced a lighter hairdo for months, does the old wives tale that blondes have more fun than brunettes hold true for Bullock? “Not at all” according to the natural dark brunette star. “Fun is what you make. Nobody is going to bring you the fun,” she said. “You got to go out and get it your fun.” One thing Bullock definitely did have fun with was playing a strong feisty woman with a quirky firecracker personality. “There’s no one else like her,” she says of Tuohy. “I’ve never met anyone else like her and I wish there more like her. She doesn’t care what people think. She and I come from very different viewpoints and we meet in the middle very easily because you realize the differences are not that great.” She adds, “I feel very humbled to have been a part of this. Emma Roberts hit the The Prada Book launch on Friday in Beverly Hills with brand new sexy blonde hair color, and the Hotel for Dogs star talked to PEOPLE about whether she thinks the old cliché rings true. “I don’t think I need to be having any more fun these days!” she joked. But that doesn’t mean the actress won’t be testing out the theory. “I leave for New York in a few days and I think, what better than to show off my new hair than in New York to see if, you know, blondes do have more fun!” So why the sudden change? Emma explains that in addition to just wanting to “change it up,” the new look is also helping her to get into character for her newest film, It’s Kind Of A Funny Story. “I start shooting in New York next week and I wanted to do something different,” she explains. “I play a girl in mental institute that cut her face up with scissors. Kellie Pickler may be one of country’s most iconic blondes — she’s even impersonated Dolly Parton — but for now, she’s joining a less represented segment of the music community: redheads! The bombshell debuted her newly auburn locks on the red carpet of the CMA Awards tonight, having carefully tucked them under a hat for Parton’s Live from London DVD premiere party on Tuesday night. Pickler joked of the attention her new do is getting on the red carpet, saying, “It seems to be the thing to talk about.” She also gave a shout-out to legendary country redhead Reba McEntire, suggesting that she was joining her ranks since “we’ve got enough blondes in country.” But, she did admit to PEOPLE that she is still adjusting to her new do. “The hair doesn’t make the person, but it has been a shocker. I wake up in the morning and walk by the mirror and I’m like, ‘Who’s that!’ I thought someone broke into my house!” Pickler did manage to find the upside, explaining that, “It’s been interesting with red hair cause you can’t wear the same things. We may know Julianne Hough as much for her platinum locks as for her quick footwork on Dancing with the Stars, but over the weekend the budding country singer took to Twitter to reveal a totally new look. “Me with darker hair,” the star Tweeted before linking to a shot of her with newly colored hair — while assuring fans that it’s “still kinda blonde.” We’ve always loved Julianne’s signature light color, but think the darker hue is just as flattering — and really makes her baby blues pop! In Good Hair, Chris Rock’s hilarious documentary for HBO, the comedian and a number of well-known personalities discuss the extremes men and women will go to to straighten African-American hair. One of the major running jokes of the film is that because of the complexity of a “weave,” African-American women do not want their hair touched. But Rock told PEOPLE that when he appeared on Oprah, “I ran my hands through her hair. I thought it was nice,” he said. When asked if he might touch Ashanti’s elaborate coif at the Cinema Society and Target screening of his film in New York — she showed up with one side of her hair woven into corn rows and the other straightened into large curls — Rock answered, “No, you can’t touch that!”, before turning to the singer to tell her that “Your hair’s great.” Ashanti told PEOPLE of her coif that night, “It took maybe 45 minutes,” mentioning that it had been inspired by an asymmetrical coif that Pepa of Salt ‘n Pepa was once forced to wear after being burned by a perm, and losing the hair on one side of her head. “Tonight, we mixed it up,” said Ashani, “I didn’t want to burn it. It’s braids and curls. And, no . . . you can’t touch that.” Pepa, also in the documentary, admitted inventing that particular type of asymmetrical hairdo. “I got a bad perm one time,” she said. “And I burned off half of my hair. I had to shave it off. I was totally crying. I was destroyed. And Salt was trying to pencil it back in.” At the Standard Hotel afterparty, with his galpal Coco on his arm, Ice-T admitted to an even more embarrassing look for such a tough guy, a mug shot with “curlers in my hair” when he was arrested some 20 years back. –Jeffrey Slonim

We were a bit shocked when Pete Wentz posted photos of his freshly shorn head on Twitter yesterday morning declaring it the “death of the Emo swoosh”– and we weren’t the only ones. At Fall Out Boy’s New York City concert on Sunday night, concert-goers watched in shock as Mark Hoppus, bassist for Blink-182, took a pair of shears to Pete Wentz’s famous mane. The cut is a payoff from a promise Wentz made to Hoppus long ago, saying he’d do anything to get on the Blink-182 tour. The Fall Out Boy gamely sat through his band’s set on the Madison Square Garden stage as Hoppus sniped away his hair. Knowing Pete didn’t buzz away his famous bangs on his own accord, we can’t help but wonder if he will grow them back! Tell us: Should Pete grow his hair back or do you like the buzz cut?

Aaahhhh!!!,” she told fans. After revealing the finished look, she explained, “I loved being my natural color but Its for an upcoming project which I’m really excited to share with you soon. As a top hoofer on Dancing With The Stars Karina Smirnoff might have Hollywood’s best products at her disposal, but when it comes to beauty, the dancer revealed to PEOPLE last night, she’d prefers grocery store shelves to department store counters. “I’ve got to be honest,” she confided at the Entertainment Weekly and Women in Film Pre-Emmy Party, “I don’t spend a lot of time or money on buying expensive products, because there are so many natural ways — like you can use olive oil for your skin. You don’t even have to spend hundreds of dollars on an eye cream,” she says frankly. Karina traces her love of kitchen-cupboard beauty to her Greco-Russian upbringing. “Have you seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding? How I think they had Windex that cured everything. With my family, Aloe Vera cures everything. If you have a blister: Aloe Vera. If you have a wrinkle: Aloe Vera. So, I think it comes with being half-Greek and half-Russian. We’ve always been into natural.” And she’ll soon be making her family beauty fix-alls accessible to everyone. “I’m actually writing a lifestyle book. Katharine spoke with PEOPLE backstage at the Tommy Hilfiger show in Manhattan’s Bryant Park tents about what prompted her to trade her signature sexy brunette style for being a blonde-bobbed bombshell. “I have a record coming out in January called Unbroken,” she explains, “and I’ve been working on it for the last year and it’s been a big artistic development. The clothing wasn’t the bright thing at Anna Sui’s circus-themed runway show Wednesday night — for Peaches Geldof, it was her hair, too. The Brit It-girl debuted newly darkened locks in a rather unusual shade: dark purple. “I change it once every two months,” Geldof told PEOPLE, “and I thought purple because I’d exhausted every other option so why not?” As for the next color on her hair palette, “I want to go blue,” says the socialite. Sitting front row at Sui’s show in Bryant Park, Geldof enjoyed a low key appearance, ignoring the frenzy surrounding Olivia Palermo shooting a scene for The City with ELLE Creative Director Joe Zee, and instead focusing on the clothes on the catwalk. And what makes Sui one of her favorites? “She’s forward-thinking, but at the same time her collections reference back to eras like the ’70s and ’60s [where] really iconic moments in fashion happened,” said Geldof. It’s a new View — and a new do — for Kate Gosselin. On her second day as guest cohost on the talk show, Kate debuted a new wavy look. “You have a new hairstyle. It’s a first!” said Barbara Walters, as Tuesday’s show began. Added co-host Joy Behar, “It looks cute!” Gosselin gave credit to the show’s makeup artists with an enthusiastic, “Your girls back there, whoo baby! Isn’t it cute?” Later in the program, Kate talked about why she’s still wearing her wedding ring even though she and Jon are divorcing. “I said very early on that I would continue to wear it for the kids,” she explains. “We’re not officially divorced yet, and you know, I’ve had it on for 10 years. It’s upsetting to the kids.” Kate also responded to Jon’s comments to Good Morning America last week that he “despises” Kate. “Of course it bothers me,” she said. “Am I going to return the favor?
