Expert Beauty Tip: Get the Perfect Lip Stain

courtesy laura mercier

While interviewing makeup artist Charlie Green at the Twinkle fashion show, I was immediately drawn to the matte berry stained lips she had done on all the models. The rest of the face was fairly naked, just perfect skin and groomed brows, and the overall look was super easy but polished. I really wanted to try the look for myself so I got a few tips from Charlie on how to make lip stain last. She used a M.A.C Pro Stain on the models, but you can get a close approximation with the deep wine-y color of M.A.C Amplified Cream Lipstick in Burnin’, $14, maccosmetics.com, Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Sugar Violet, $20, sephora.com, or Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain, $11 at drugstore.com. Charlie used her index finger to push the color into lips instead of a brush so it looks like a “residue of pigment” and not too perfect. She then dabbed it with a tissue to take off excess color, then pushed in another layer of color, followed by the tissue and then a final application. The key to this look is the matte texture so skip gloss altogether. Finish with a light dusting of translucent powder, a couple swipes of clear brow gel and curled lashes and you’re all set.

Natalie Portman sparkled in icy neutrals at the 22nd American Cinematheque Award honoring her Closer co-star Julia Roberts. To get the look, her makeup artist Rachel Goodwin first “warmed up her complexion” with sheer Teint Innocence Compact Foundation in Wheat, $55 at chanel.com. Then she added a bit of a flush to the tops of her cheekbones with Irreelle Blush in Neroli Rose, $40. Goodwin applied a sheer wash of shimmery Ombre D’Eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Source, $30 to Natalie’s eyelids. Rachel finished with an application of what she calls the “ultimate party girl pink” — Rouge Allure Lip Colour in Surprise, $30 mixed with a bit of Pro Lumiere Correcteur Concealer in Light, $38. The result is a dazzling face to go with her trendy Lanvin purple strapless dress.

Get Perfect Skin Like the Gossip Girls!

courtesy of Per-fekt

The introduction of Hi-Def television allowed us to get into the action of our favorite shows, catch all the little details — but unfortunately for today’s television stars, we can also now discern every line, bump and pore on their faces. Since heavy foundation is now visible too, many stars have resorted to having foundation air-brushed on by skilled makeup artists armed with an professional (read: super expensive) airbrush tools. The cast of Gossip Girl has a better (read: more affordable) way to get their skin hi-def ready. The show’s makeup artist, Sherri Berman Laurence, has turned to Per-fekt Beauty Skin Perfection Gel, $58 at sephora.com to get their complexions camera-ready. Even better, this antioxidant-rich gel that works as a primer, mattifier and redness reducer in one. And you can reapply this multi-tasker throughout the day without fear of it flaking off or caking. If it works in HD, it’s good enough for us.

Josie Maran Launches Her New Makeup Line

Jean Baptiste Lacroix/WireImage

In the courtyard of organic eatery Wilshire Restaurant, Josie Maran introduced her new eco-friendly makeup line to a small gathering of friends and editors. After years of modeling (and a recent stint on Dancing with the Stars), Josie tells PEOPLE that she decided to launch her own line because “you can be luxurious and chic and you don’t have to sacrifice your health and the environment’s health. And I found that there wasn’t a make-up line that was sophisticated and natural. So, I really felt that there was a hole in the market and I wanted to fill it. It’s environmentally-safe and good for the body. The packaging and the compacts are all biodegradable or recyclable. This is the whole package. The ingredients are as organic as possible and the packaging is eco-friendly.” In keeping with her reuse and recycle motto, Maran wore a vintage flea market dress, paired with her own makeup, of course — Desirous lipstick paired with Embrace, Chianti and Magic eyeshadow and her Finger Paints palette in Sweet. And she’s already got a favorite in the line. “”I have a lipstick named after my daughter, Rumi Joon. Anything that’s nude in my line is named after her because she’s always naked. Her grandpa, her uncles and my brother are always like ‘Do you own any clothes?’” Josie Maran Cosmetics can be purchased at Barney’s New York and at josiemarancosmetics.com.
