Adam Levine Explains Those Anti-Celebrity Fragrance Comments

No foot-in-mouth here: Adam Levine doesn’t regret his anti-celebrity fragrance commentsand he’s proud to be releasing one, too.

“I know there’s a stigma attached to it,” he tells PEOPLE. “A stigma that I fully understand because I, too, hate the idea of a celebrity fragrance, absolutely, 100 percent.”

So … why is he creating one?

“I kind of thought to myself, ‘Well I’m interested in fashion and there’s a lot of things about it that could be really cool if done properly,” he continues. “So I want to do a thing that’s never done properly. That’s my goal.”

Though Voice costar Christina Aguilera called him out for his March 2011 Tweet, which knocked star scents, Levine says her remarks were “funny and silly and friendly. I didn’t actually see that … I heard about it,” he explains. “We were just messing around.”

Does Adam Levine’s New Fragrance Smell of Hypocrisy?

Eau de … eat crow? Adam Levine is likely feeling a little sheepish today after pal Christina Aguilera caught him contradicting himself on Twitter.

On Wednesday, the Maroon 5 singer announced plans for his first fragrances for men and women, both called 222. According to a release, the scents will “reflect [his] personality and style” and retail for $36-$65.

However, Aguilera must have a fabulous memory or a Twitter-savvy friend: Friday she Tweeted a link back to a March 2011 Tweet of Levine’s, which read, “I also would like to put an official ban on celebrity fragrances. Punishable by death from this point forward.”

“Haha @AdamLevine,” Aguilera wrote in reply. “What a difference a year makes …”

However, her detective work wasn’t totally mean-spirited; Levine’s fellow Voice mentor, who has several scents of her own, sent him her best wishes, too, writing, “Welcome to the celebrity fragrance family!” Tell us: Would you still consider buying Levine’s fragrances?

He’s already dominating The Voice, and now he’s moving onto … the nose? Adam Levine is developing his very first fragrances, scents for both men and women, which will “reflect [his] personality and style,” according to a release.

The fragrances, called 222 (his lucky number) will debut in May 2013 for $36-$65. Gift sets and related products will follow seasonally.

To create the scents, the Maroon 5 frontman and Voice mentor teamed with ID Perfumes, the masterminds behind Katy Perry‘s Purr and Meow! fragrances. And it sounds like the company has very high expectations for its new celebrity face.

“Adam is a performer with tremendous charisma — both on stage and on TV,” ID CEO Ilia Lekach said in a release. “Endeavoring to capture that in a bottle has thus far been very exciting and we’re certain the final products will be even more so.” Tell us: What do you think Levine’s scents will smell like?

Selena Gomez Dishes on Her ‘Intoxicating’ Fragrance

While visiting New York City this week, Selena Gomez gave 10 of her biggest fans a treat: the chance to help her put the finishing touches on her upcoming perfume.

“I was nervous,” she told PEOPLE Monday. “I relate a lot to my fans. Whenever I do concerts, shows, meet and greets, I see these people. They’re my age, or younger or a little older, and we’re all going through the same thing.”

Luckily, she had nothing to be nervous about; Gomez hit it off with her admirers, and added the final notes to her fragrance (due out this May). “They picked out something I’m really excited about and really proud of,” she revealed.

Gomez said she was very hands-on throughout the process, picking the initial notes, designing the bottle (shaped like a gown with balloons on top) and advising on the campaign (which features her floating in water). “It’s been a long process,” she admitted. “But it’s been really fun.”
