No word whether Jessica Simpson‘s 31st birthday celebration on Sunday included cake, but there was something else that made her day pretty sweet: an orange Hermès Birkin bag! The bride-to-be Tweeted Sunday that she was over the moon about the stylish present, which came courtesy of fiancé Eric Johnson. “Eric made my birthday!!! I have never been more surprised in my life! Jackie O who?” she wrote. Accompanying the Tweet was a photo of Simpson (in her favorite green sweater), kissing her chic new bag. But it wasn’t just the Birkin that made her day; hours earlier, she thanked all the important people in her life for their support, too. “Life is such a gift. Thank you to all of my family, friends, and fans for all of your birthday wishes and unconditional love. I’m so HAPPY!” Simpson is hardly the first star to lust after the coveted Birkin bag: recently, Ashley Tisdale scored hers after a two-year wait, and when she finally got her hands on it, she also shared photos of her pretty new purchase. Vanessa Hudgens, Hayden Panettiere and Miranda Cosgrove Design Bags for Charity

Trendy stars like Vanessa Hudgens, Hayden Panettiere and Miranda Cosgrove are taking a fashionable approach to charity! To celebrate the second year of Neutrogena’s Wave for Change campaign — a charitable intiative that makes it easy for teens to give back and support those in need — the leading ladies (and Neutrogena brand ambassadors) have each designed a signature tote bag with a different cause in mind. “My tote bag [right] is benefiting disaster relief projects here in the United States,” Hudgens tells PEOPLE. “It’s cool that you can help others and get a fun, fashionable bag. It was fun to design and it’s the perfect tote for summer to use when shopping or even by the pool or at the beach.” Panettiere designed her tote [left] for environmental charities and Miranda Cosgrove made hers [center] to benefit educational causes. Other stars are getting involved, too — by supporting their famous friends! “Hayden … did a beautiful job,” pal and fellow Neutrogena ambassador Emma Roberts said. “I think I am going to use hers so I can show support for the campaign and also have a great summer tote.” The stars’ Wave for Change bags are available July 1 through Aug. 31 for those who purchase two Neutrogena products at Target. And for every Neutrogena acne, cleansing or cosmetics product sold, the company will donate $1 to GlobalGiving.org — up to $250,000! Visit neutrogena.com/waveforchange for details. Check Out Nicole Richie’s New House of Harlow 1960 Handbags

She promised us purses, and purses she created. Nicole Richie officially unveiled the House of Harlow 1960 handbag collection today, and the options are plentiful — and pretty! Based on the line’s Bohemian vibe, the collection includes croc clutches, leather carry-alls and everything in between. According to a release, the concept behind the line was juxtaposing casual and luxury, combining relaxed vintage leathers with materials like young calf hair. Hardware also played a big role in the design; gold and black triangle studs frame some of the bigger bags, and jaguar heads close clutches. “I wanted to make sure that each piece is special and then be able to grow it slowly and organically season after season,” Richie told WWD of the new collection. “I always try to design pieces that are universal, meaning anyone can wear and carry it.” The bags, available at high-end department and specialty stores beginning in mid-July, will range in price from $150 to $625. Tell us: Will you carry a House of Harlow 1960 handbag?

Celeb Fave L’Wren Scott Launches a Handbag Line at Barneys

Growing up, designer L’Wren Scott could usually hear the moment when her mother arrived home at night. “She always had a very chic and sleek bag, and it always made a sound. Every time she would come home, I would hear the noise of the bag setting down, the bag closing,” Scott told reporters Wednesday at a breakfast celebrating her new handbag line at Barneys New York. “It was a memory to me.” That vivid memory was enough to inspire the model-turned-stylist-turned-designer to create her first full-size handbag, the Lula, available now at Barneys stores worldwide. “It was always sort of my dream to make this bag,” Scott explained, referencing the small, large and weekend bags. “I wanted to have a bag that’s very structured, very sharp, very tailored that also had a practical way of using it.” In fact, the spacious purse has a pouch for your iPad or Kindle, and lots of room for everyday necessities. Some styles even come with a mini pouchette inside, perfect for evening. “You can close it, you can hide all your tricks. It’s not schlumpy. It looks chic when it’s sitting there.” Scott’s attention to structure and detail is what’s made her a favorite of so many celebrities; Amy Adams had a red carpet moment in one of her dramatic blue gowns at February’s Oscars, and Oprah Winfrey chose the designer to create dresses for her final shows. “Just being asked to make her clothes was already exciting,” Scott shared. “I had no idea she was wearing them for her last shows.” After shipping them off in garment boxes, “like they were my children,” Scott said, she was stunned to see them on those last episodes. “I was in tears, just like everyone else,” she admitted. “It was so emotional.” –Kate Hogan

It was a fashion frenzy as stylish stars like Emmy Rossum, Kristin Davis and Calista Flockhart gathered for the 8th Annual Bag Lunch Event Benefiting P.S. Arts, sponsored by Dior Beauty. More than 200 designer bags were up for bids at the outdoor luncheon held at a private Santa Monica estate — and the competition was fierce. “I really wanted this graffiti Tumi luggage but [was outbid],” said Rossum. So now what is the Shameless actress in the market for? “Something that you can throw a lot in, from SPF to an iPad, so you can just go. And something lightweight.” With summer just around the corner, talk turned to the perfect warm-weather bag. For Flockhart, it’s all about the classics. “It has to be comfortable and it can’t be trendy,” she said, “I don’t want any big label on it. Not that I don’t like brand names, but I just don’t want to see it on the bag.” Event co-chair, Davis, pretty in pink Dior, likes to have a little fun with her summer accessories. “Color is a fun element this year and there’s so much color that you can play. Here not only do you get a beautiful bag but the money goes to charity so you don’t feel so bad spending the money.” Tell us: what’s your summer bag this year? –Michelle Ward

She may be a supermodel-turned-actress, but Brooklyn Decker is still a bargain hunter. “I love a good sale,” the Just Go With It star admitted to reporters in New York recently. “I grew up in North Carolina so the whole New York fashion thing is still somewhat new. It’s only been five years since I’ve even been here so a good sale is always easy on the eyes and easy on the wallet.” Fêting the launch of the latest fashion flash sale site, Amazon’s MYHABIT.COM, Decker even rocked her favorite on-sale purchase: “They’re Dolce & Gabbana, they’re lace booties and I got them 20 percent off at one of the flash sale sites online. I love them.” And Decker wasn’t the only one sporting a discounted designer buy that night. For Vanessa Hudgens, it was her accessory choice for the evening. “This bag! Good ol’ Givenchy. I loved the hardware.” Tell us: What was your best bargain buy? Shruti Dhalwala

Nicole Richie’s Top Five Summer Style Tips

Nicole Richie designs
Donato Sardella/WireImage

Nicole Richie knows a thing or two about fashion; she’s the head of her own mini fashion empire and we just love her breezy street style. So when we spoke to her recently at Nordstrom Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Calif., we had to ask, “What should every girl have this summer?” Richie, who says she designs for “a multitasking woman that likes to have fun with fashion but wears it with ease at the same time,” offered up her top summer must-haves in reply:

The perfect bag. “I would say a good, big beach-bag,” says Richie. “I love the big Goyard bags.” And when it comes to purses, the designer knows a thing or two. Of her upcoming handbag line, she shares, “We have a lot of clutches and different styles … some fun leathers and skins.”

Sweet shades. A great pair of sunglasses is a necessity for the California girl. “I’m wearing my House of Harlow Chelsea ones a lot right now,” she says. “They’re big, huge, huge frames. Those have been really fun, so I’ve been wearing them a lot lately.” To pick the perfect pair of sunglasses, the fashionista says that “it’s important to know what’s good on your face.”

Good tunes. “My iPod is what I need always,” she emphasizes. “I always need my summer playlist.” The designer admits one accessory she lacks is a case for her most important gadget. “I don’t have a cute iPod case … maybe that should be the next step, designing iPod cases,” she jokes.
