Oscar de la Renta's Final Collection Is Here: We Pick Three Dresses We Want to See on Golden Globe Nominees (Hi, Jennifer Aniston!)

Dec/11/2014 at 12:17 PM ET

As soon as the Golden Globe nominations are announced, we start predicting looks for our favorite female nominees. And with the debut of Oscar de la Renta’s pre-fall 2015 collection this week, that hunt for award show gowns got a whole lot easier.

The 34 pieces are part of the last collection bearing the fingerprints of the late designer, who passed away in October at the age of 82. The New York Times reviewed the collection, which was completed by his studio director Laura Kim, and about which Kim said, “We tried to make it like he’s still here with us. We made big ball gowns, like he likes them.” And since Hollywood loves a big ballgown too, we picked three dresses for three Golden Globe-nominated stars to honor his legacy on the red carpet.

Reese Witherspoon's Golden Globes Look Came to Her Stylist In a Dream - and More Amazing Scoop on Her Style!

We like Reese Witherspoon‘s sweet style, but we love when she goes sexy, and she did just that at the Golden Globes Sunday night in custom Calvin Klein Collection and $3.7 million worth of Harry Winston jewelry. Her stylists gave PEOPLE the rundown from start to finish.

THE DRESS. Stylist Leslie Fremar came up with the color for Witherspoon’s gown in a dream, then tasked Calvin Klein with making it happen — and it certainly didn’t come together overnight. The collaboration began about a month ago and ended with one final fitting Sunday morning, culminating in a result Fremar was thrilled with. “I love the color. I love the fit. I felt like it was very modern. It was moving forward for her in terms of fashion,” Fremar tells PEOPLE. “I feel like it all came together like I wanted it to.”

Witherspoon herself contributed some design elements, like the striking racerback, and loved the dress enough to share a sketch on Instagram (below). “You could see it in her face, that she just felt really good in it,” Fremar says. “It was a collaboration and it really came together. Everyone was happy.”

One more fun element Fremar shared: The shoes were custom Christian Louboutins dyed perfectly to match. “I had them dyed the color of her dress, because I didn’t want any break in color,” Fremar says. “I sent them [a swatch] and they made the shoes to match.” Now that’s service.

By now you may have gotten the memo that the entire PEOPLE StyleWatch team absolutely swooned for Lupita Nyong’o’s dazzling Ralph Lauren Collection gown at Sunday’s Golden Globes. Hayden Panettiere Bought Her Tom Ford Golden Globes Dress Off the Rack - and Ford Sent Flowers to Thank Her

If you love celebrity fashion, then you likely already know that it’s increasingly rare for stars to wear their own clothes on the red carpet. And when it comes to massive, all-eyes-on-you events like the Golden Globes, it’s even more likely that everything you see on your favorite star — from her shoes to her jewelry (especially the jewelry) — has been borrowed from a designer and will head back to the showroom the following morning, possibly with wine stains or worse.

So it’s super-unlikely to see a celeb wearing a gown they’ll actually take home with them, which is why it was refreshing to find out that Hayden Panettiere picked out her Tom Ford gown off the rack to wear to Sunday’s awards show. She gushed about the designer to PEOPLE (“I’m obsessed with it! I freaked out that I’m even wearing it. Anything he makes is just stunning,” she said) and she was ready to put her money where her mouth is.

At the HBO post-Golden Globes party, the star confessed to trying on tons of dresses before finding the one — “More than I feel like I usually do!” — but the search was worth it when she found this dress. “I bought this one. I actually get to keep it, which is really weird to me, that I don’t have to worry about somebody showing up on my doorstep going, ‘Where’s the dress? Give it back!’” she said. “It’s like buying a piece of art. You can hopefully keep it forever.”
